This photo was first shared on Flickr just over eight years ago, not long after I had signed up. As I was never very happy with the original scan I've given it a re-work. Some people may not like the fact that there is a lamppost sticking out of the "40". I can understand that, and I'll admit I'm a little troubled by its presence, but my own version of purism dictates that because it was "there", it stays.

40121 at Keighley with the 09:35 Carlisle - Nottingham, Thursday 23rd August 1979. Note the black vinyl "Adidas" holdall on the platform. This was mine, probably dumped in a hurry as I rushed to get this photo. Such bags were a very common gricers' accessory in the 1970s.

The first class 90 to be withdrawn sadly was also the last to enter service. 90 050 suffered a transformer fire at Coventry on 30/9/2004 while working 4M73 an Ipswich to Ditton container train. Although owned by Freightliner Ltd the loco was dragged to the EWS Depot at Crewe ETD for assessment and it was deemed too costly to repair, it was formerly stored unserviceable by Freightliner on 13/12/2004. (It has never been officially withdrawn pending scrapping but for all intense and purpose it is unlikely to ever work again). Its demise left Freightliner short of class 90's as they only had 10 where as EWS had 25 on their books, some of which were already stored surplus. EWS hired 90 016 to Freightliner as it had been in warm storage since 7/4/2004, it re-entered traffic on 30/10/2004 as a direct replacement for 90 050. In December 2004 90 016 was returned to EWS but not for long as some sort of exchange deal was done which saw 90 016 sold to Porterbrook Leasing who leased it to Freightliner in part exchange for 90 050. 90 016 was dispatched to Toton paint shops and it was repainted green by EWS in February 2005. Wrecked 90 050 then moved the other way from Poterbrook Leasing to EWS. Since the takeover by Deutsche Bahn in 2009 the shell of 90 050 now belongs to Arriva Trains UK Ltd a subsidiary of DB, all very confusing.
In this image 90 050 sits in a deteriorating state five years after it was stored along with 90 022 behind, this loco being laid up on 21/9/2006 and hasn't been used since. For company they have 92 011 named 'Handel' another stored out of traffic machine at the time having been laid up on 12/12/2005. The class 92 has been more fortunate though and after seven years stored has come back being reinstated on 2/8/2012 and is one of the few in the active DB Cargo UK fleet.
Venice Carnival - Carnevale di Venezia - Italy.
Perhaps not the best symbol of Venice, but the pigeons of St. Mark's Square have definitely made an indelible mark in this romantic city's landscape. Truly, it won't be the same without them.

Sabancı Merkez Camii (English: Sabancı Central Mosque) in Adana is the largest mosque in Turkey. The exterior of the mosque is similar to the Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Blue mosque) in Istanbul while the interior decoration is similar to the Selimiye Mosque in Edirne.
Sabanci Central Mosque, which went into service in 1998, is built on a total of 52,600 square meter of land and has a closed area of 6,600 square meters.
Sabanci Central Mosque was built jointly by Turkish Religious Foundation and Sabanci Foundation. The proprietorship of the mosque belongs to Adana Religious Affairs Foundation and its usage rights have been transferred to Adana Provincial Office of Mufti.

Headed out scoping some locations for some upcoming sessions and to capture some Chicago blue hour since it has been a while and I have the 70-200mm to play with. Love that lens. This was taken from the Kinzie bridge. Love the details in these types of shot which makes the 70-200 great not only for portraits but tight cityscape shots!

When I got home, I got my camera equip together, drove over there. Got there, set up my camera and tripod, and then realized I had forgotten my remote. Drove all the way back home, picked up my remote, drove back there, set up everything, left remote in the car. Went back to my car, got the remote, bugs attacked me while I took these, and while finishing up, I realized my Aunt had been watching me half way through after she saw my car parked there haaa

In Classical Maya culture the very central core of the universe's construction was the Wakah-Chan, the World Tree. It spanned, almost beyond conception, from the deep underworlds, through this Earth that we know and upward into the inconceivable heavens. It is the source of life and all creation. i Hunahpu, the great First Father was born from its branches. All the stars of the cosmos revolved around it and later scholars have come to realize that it was the Milky Way appearing in the skies that was the visible form of the Wakah-Chan.
These images were taken of the new 50ft Eaton Centre Christmas tree, already a subject of controversy. This is it's first appearance after 20 years of the much more traditional Swarovski Crystal Christmas Tree that appeared here in the mall's centre court.
I found it profoundly wonderful that it makes its first appearance in the final months of 2012, the equally controversial year that marks the end of the 5,125 year Mayan Calendar, the Tzolkin, on Dec.21'st.
The construction of this gigantic tree with it's emphasis on light, stars and 'planets' and it's central 'Milky Way" was too wonderful a 'coincidence' for me, in this year, to ignore.

The University of Tampa (UT), is a private, co-educational university situated in Downtown Tampa, Florida, United States along the Hillsborough River. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. In 2006, the University celebrated its 75th anniversary.
The Henry B. Plant Museum is located in the south wing of Plant Hall on the University of Tampa’s campus, at 401 West Kennedy Boulevard. Plant Hall was formerly known as the Tampa Bay Hotel, which was a 511 room resort hotel opened on February 5, 1891 by Henry B. Plant near the terminus of his rail line. The museum's exhibits focus on Gilded Age tourism, the elite lifestyle of the hotel's guests, and the building's use during the Spanish–American War. It was designed by architect J.A. Wood who also created the old Hillsborough County Courthouse and the Oglethorpe Hotel.
The museum is open to the public every day except Monday and major holidays. During the Christmas holiday season, the museum hosts the annual Victorian Christmas Stroll.
The entire building (under the title of Tampa Bay Hotel) is a U.S. National Historic Landmark, designated as such on December 5, 1972. On April 18, 2012, the AIA's Florida Chapter placed the building on its list of Florida Architecture: 100 Years. 100 Places.

LEGO Stormtroopers have been featured a wide variety of sets in the Star Wars Theme, and have been redesigned with more detail or fixed details often.
Although the standard Stormtrooper looks almost the same in every set they have been released in, over the years, they have been slightly redesigned more than once. Also, the helmet has been changed three times.
One of those variations appeared in the 7264 Imperial Inspection set, where they had more detailed shin plates. In the set, it featured 4 troopers with previously unused leg detail, having increased Utility Belt detail and knee plates over the usual blank legs.
There are currently three variations of the LEGO Stormtrooper helmets: One with two mouth grills split into halves, the second with single black mouth grill, and the third most recent - a thick, gray mouth grill with small black lines. Their eyes have also grown gradually throughout the years.
In 2009, a special edition silver Stormtrooper was released as a magnet set to commemorate 10 years of LEGO Star Wars. It was later released as a promotional minifigure at Toys R Us.
In 2012, the Stormtroopers and Scouts were given new faces and for the stormtrooper a new torso.

The Shubert Theatre is a Broadway theatre located at 225 West 44th Street in Midtown Manhattan, New York City.
Designed by architect Henry Beaumont Herts, it was named after Sam S. Shubert, the second oldest of the three brothers of the theatrical producing family. It shares a Venetian Renaissance facade with the adjoining Booth Theatre, which was constructed at the same time, although the two have distinctly different interiors. The two theatres are connected by a private road/sidewalk, "Shubert Alley". It opened on 21 October 1913 with the George Bernard Shaw play, Caesar and Cleopatra, staged by the Forbes-Robertson Repertory Company. [1]
The theatre's longest tenant was A Chorus Line, which ran for 6,137 performances from 1975 to 1990 and set the record for longest running show in Broadway history. Later long runs have included Crazy for You (1992–1996), Chicago (1996–2003), Spamalot (2005–2009) and Memphis (2009–2012). The theatre has also been a returning venue for the Tony Awards.
The top floor of the building houses the offices of the Shubert Organization. The theatre's auditorium and murals were restored in 1996. It has been designated a New York City landmark.
Upper East Side, Central Park - Jun 2008 - 114
These pictures were taken on two successive days when I had doctor appointments on the Upper East Side of NYC, and had the chance to walk along Fifth Avenue, and then through Central Park in order to return to my apartment on the Upper West Side, at Broadway & 96th
After my first stroll through the park, I returned a second day (because of a second doctor's appointment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan). This time I entered the park at 97th Street instead of 84th Street -- so I saw an entirely different set of scenes.
At this point, I had reached the western side of Central Park, once again on the inner roadway that circumnavigates the park, and was now turning south to find the 96th St. exit.
This was at about 98th Street, heading south. I was on the inner roadway, and was passed by an energetic woman jogging along with her child in a stroller...

The fictional character Spider-Man, a comic book superhero featured in Marvel Comics publications has appeared in three films since his inception. The rights to a motion picture based on Spider-Man were purchased in 1985 and moved through various production companies and studios, at one point having James Cameron to direct, before being secured by Sony Pictures Entertainment.
Sony hired comic book fan Sam Raimi to direct the first three films. Through the films, Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) developed a relationship with his high school crush Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst), and as Spider-Man, he has battled the villains Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina), New Goblin (James Franco), Sandman (Thomas Haden Church), and Venom (Topher Grace).
The first three films, produced on a total budget of US$597 million, grossed nearly $2.5 billion worldwide. Each film set several box office records, with all three included in the top 20 highest-grossing domestic films as well as the top 30 highest-grossing worldwide films. Critics have given the first two films positive reviews, while the third film received mainly mixed reviews. The series has been released on both Blu-ray and DVD.
Sony announced that the franchise will in turn be rebooted with new director Marc Webb and a new cast that includes Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy and Rhys Ifans as Dr. Curt Connors. The reboot's intention is to have Peter Parker back to developing his abilities in high school. The film, titled The Amazing Spider-Man, is scheduled to be released in 3D and IMAX 3D in 2012.
'Feet Friday ~ Not My Feet Edition' was exactly what I said when I snapped this pic. White socks, heels and highwaters reminded me of the days reading Glamour Magazine in the '70's and they always had a little section called 'Fashion Don't'. I think that's what it was called, so I Googled it and I got their 'Spring 2012 To-Die-For-Shoes' slideshow. It's a must-see!
Maybe I'll stick to my flip-flops for the foreseeable future :-)

My collection of the complete set of the Disney Store's Limited Edition Designer Dolls, from 2011 through February 2014. They are stacked up in three rows with eight doll cases in each row. I am only missing the D23 Exclusive Silver Cinderella Princess Designer Doll. I have arranged the dolls so that similar dolls from the different series are in the same column. They have all been completely deboxed, then placed back in their display cases, with the cardboard backing and all plastic packaging removed. In most cases, their poses are considerably different from their original factory poses. I have tried to make their poses more natural looking.
Just added to the top row are the Disney Fairies Designer Collection Dolls (2014), which so far consists of only Tinker Bell and Zarina (from the upcoming movie The Pirate Fairy).
The rest of the top row consists of the Disney Fairytale Designer Collection Doll Sets (2013). The D23 Gold Snow White and the Prince is the last in the row (#114 of 600). The rest of the Fairytale dolls were purchased when they were released separately, two weeks apart, and have various edition numbers.
In the middle row are eight of the ten Disney Princess Designer Collection Dolls (2011). Pocahontas and Mulan of the collection are on the bottom row. They were bought separately, and have varying edition numbers. The first five dolls released in this series (Cinderella, Ariel, Belle, Mulan and Snow White) where bought directly from the Disney Store. The other five dolls were purchased from resellers, after they were sold out.
Finally, the first six dolls of the bottom row are the Disney Villains Designer Collection Dolls (2012). They were purchased directly from the Disney Store when they were released separately, a week apart, and have various edition numbers.

There's nothing more exciting to me than observing the coastal brown bears of Alaska - especially in Katmai NP & Preserve, where the bears are so natural and free. they know nothing of humans as anything but visitors that come out and share in their surroundings from time to time. They are innocent to any of the bad habits that humans sometimes - intentionally or unintentionally - teach them. They are curious about our presence and even at times try to interact in non-threatening ways. Most times, they just give us our space, as long as we're giving them their space as well and treating them with the respect that they deserve. Sows and their cubs are always a special treat. Despite the stories that we've all heard about sows being aggressive when they have cubs around, unless they feel threatened by our behavior or surprised, in Katmai (big distinction from populated places like Yellowstone or Glacier NP), I have never witnessed that. In fact, they have been known to use humans as "cub-sitters" when males are present.
This particular shot, from my favorite Katmai visit in 2010, is a special one to me. This sow was just laying in the grasses nursing her cubs when something caused her concern. She then stood up and observed in the direction of the sound or smell of something that bothered her. Two of the cubs ran, but there was one here that was persistent at getting more to eat.
How innocent and free their lives are - at least during this particular time of their lives - and how privileged we were to spend time in their world. For it truly is a special time indeed!

Lake Enriquillo is a lake in the Dominican Republic, it is one of only a few saltwater lakes in the world inhabited by crocodiles.
Lake Enriquillo is located in a rift valley formed by the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault that extends 79 miles (127 km) from Port-au-Prince Bay in Haiti in the west, to near Neiba Bay in the Dominican Republic in the east.
This fault was responsible for the catastrophic 2010 Haiti earthquake. The lake is named after Enriquillo, a Taíno cacique who rebelled against the Spaniards in the early 16th century, and hid in the mountains North of the lake.
Lake Enriquillo covers an area of 102 square miles (265 km²) and is the lowest point in the Caribbean falling 129 feet (39 m) below sea level. During the late 2000s, the lake has increased its surface area dramatically.
Records for 2004 show the lake to be 164 square kilometers; measurements from 2011 put the area at 350 km²..... This rise in level has affected hundres of nearby residents in townships that bordered the lake, with abundant loss of agricultural land which, even if the waters recede, will probably be rendered useless due to the lake's salinity damaging the qualities of the once-arable soil.

This past weekend we went to see the exhibit "Light" at Longwood Gardens, which featured installations created by Bruce Munro. We had a fantastic time walking around the gardens after the usual closing times. The weather was perfect and even though it was crowded, everybody seemed to be enjoying the atmosphere.
If you saw my previous posts from last weekend, you will know that I had to use Adobe Camera Raw to process my NEF files instead of my usual Capture NX2 because of a glitch with the Auto-Distortion feature on my D7000 and the version of NX2 I had installed. At first all I did with Camera Raw was some basic RAW edits and save them as TIFF's to be used in NX2. But today I decided I may as well dig a bit deeper and see what it could actually do. Well it certainly proved itself with this shot. The photo straight out of camera was very dark with barely any detail in the trees. But with a few tweaks to the Exposure & Fill light settings I was able to pull out a lot more details. I probably could of done the same thing with NX2 but the one major difference between the two is that with Camera Raw you can selectively brush in the Exposure Compensation. That really helped with this image. I now know that if I really need to save an image that I can count on Camera Raw as a backup to NX2.
As with the other shots taken that night, I used a small 1ft travel tripod and triggered the long exposures with my wireless remote. This particular shot was taken on the main path with hundreds of people walking by me, luckily my Mum ran a screen for me and stopped people from bumping into me.

[catching up, and i typed this yesterday but I didn't get to uploading last night.]
So today was a glorious 90 degrees. Well, I guess I wouldn't call that glorious xD But hey, I love the warmth now and hopefully it's here to stay. Except 90s is a little much. After school I decided to lay outside for an hour or so and I got a little burned as usual hah but yolo yaknow what im saying:P yea i had to, even though that doesn't make sense there(: So this is my natural hair. Completely natural, no products nothing. That's very unusual for me xD hey i love it. I felt like I looked like someone from like a different county or some kind of tribe or whatnot xD So i figured I'd go out and embrace it with my aztec scarf and waaa-laaa.

Am Nachmittag kam ich in Gaziantep an und machte mich dann recht bald auf die Suche nach der Festung, die mitten im Stadtzentrum auf einem Hügel liegt. Man müsste meinen, dass dies nicht schwierig zu finden sei, aber Gaziantep ist eine derartige Betonwüste mit engen Gassen dass man den Hügel von nirgendwo sonst sieht als wenn man gerade davor steht. Ich benutzte dann einfach die aufwärts führenden Gassen und kam schliesslich auf eine komplett überbaute Hügelkuppe mit einer Moschee und einer riesigen türkischen Flagge. Hinter der Moschee hatte es einen kleinen Park, von wo aus die Aussicht auf die Stadt prächtig war (da Foto entstand dort) – aber von der Festung keine Spur! Es stellte sich heraus, dass ich mich auf den (viel höheren) Türktepe-Hügel verirrt hatte und die Festung etwa einen halben Kilometer westlich liegt. Die 100%ige Überbauung macht die Orientierung in dieser Stadt sehr schwer, auch wenn sie sehr hügelig ist und viele Orientierungspunkte bieten würde…

Newcastle at night is truly beautiful, this is the Millennium Bridge, sorry it's a bit grainy, this is the best I could do hand-held, wish I'd brought me tripod with me.
The Gateshead Millennium Bridge is a pedestrian and cyclist tilt bridge spanning the River Tyne in England between Gateshead's Quays arts quarter on the south bank, and the Quayside of Newcastle upon Tyne on the north bank. The award-winning structure was conceived and designed by architects Wilkinson Eyre and structural engineers Gifford. The bridge is sometimes referred to as the 'Blinking Eye Bridge' or the 'Winking Eye Bridge' due to its shape and its tilting method. In terms of height, the Gateshead Millennium Bridge is slightly shorter than the neighbouring Tyne Bridge, and stands as the sixteenth tallest structure in the city.
The bridge was lifted into place in one piece by the Asian Hercules II, one of the world's largest floating cranes, on 20 November 2000. It was opened to the public on 17 September 2001, and was dedicated by Queen Elizabeth II on 7 May 2002. The bridge, which cost £22m to build, was part funded by the Millennium Commission and European Regional Development Fund. It was built by Volker Stevin.
Six 45 cm (18 in) diameter Hydraulic rams (three on each side, each powered by a 55 kW electric motor) rotate the bridge back on large bearings to allow small ships and boats (up to 25 m (82 ft) tall) to pass underneath. The bridge takes as little as 4.5 minutes to rotate through the full 40° from closed to open, depending on wind speed. Its appearance during this manoeuvre has led to it being nicknamed the "Blinking Eye Bridge".
The bridge has operated reliably since construction, opening to allow river traffic to pass. It also opens periodically for sightseers and for major events such as the Northumbrian Water University Boat Race and the Cutty Sark Tall Ships' Race. One of the principal requirements for opening the bridge is to allow access to HMS Calliope where Royal Navy patrol boat HMS Example is based.
The construction of the bridge won the architects Wilkinson Eyre the 2002 Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Stirling Prize and won Gifford the 2003 IStructE Supreme Award. In 2005, the bridge received the Outstanding Structure Award from International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE).
Bollards, known as the Vessel Collision Protection System, were installed when the bridge was built to protect it from collisions. However, the bollards became unsightly, and it became noted that they weren't actually required. They were removed in March 2012.
This is what remains of the old jetty from which the steamship "SS Fairy Queen" used to ply the waters of the loch.

The story of the Loch Eck steamer Fairy Queen [1878-1926]
Many people will know of the famous paddle and turbine pleasure steamers which sailed on the Firth of Clyde from the 1800s until the early 1970s. Who, of a certain age, will not have heard of the Clyde steamers Duchess of Hamilton, Queen Mary II, Jeanie Deans and Waverley ? These steamers brought pleasure to millions of holidaymakers and tourists for many years. Starting as long ago as the 1820s right through to the late 1920s some Clyde and other steamers also sailed in conjunction with smaller steamboats which sailed on inland fresh water lochs providing tourist excursions. Few people may know then of the existence of one of these very small steamboats which plied the still, dark fresh waters of Loch Eck, just north west of Dunoon. The small steamship Fairy Queen carried passengers on excursion sailings on Loch Eck for over forty years.
Fresh water Loch Eck, on the Cowal peninsula north west of Dunoon, is around 7 miles long and around 67 feet above sea level. Steeply rising mountains on each side of the loch give a great sense of sanctuary. On the west side of Loch Eck is the Paper Cave where the Campbells allegedly hid their family documents due to conflicts in the 17th century. The loch is also home to a rare species of fish, the Powan - a fresh water herring - which is found only in Loch Eck and Loch Lomond. It is interesting to note that there was, in fact, a small steamer named Aglaia [one of the very first iron steam ships in the world] sailing on Loch Eck as long ago as the 1820s in connection with some Clyde steamers but these sailings did not, apparently, last for very long. The Aglaia, built on the Clyde in 1827, was pulled from the Holy Loch up the River Eachaig to the south end of Loch Eck
It was in 1878 that the small propellor-driven coal-fired steamer Fairy Queen appeared on Loch Eck. She was built by the shipbuilders T B Seath and Company of Rutherglen, just south east of Glasgow. After construction, the iron steamer was dismantled at her builders yard, transported in sections to Cowal and then re- assembled on the shores of Loch Eck.
The dimensions of the diminutive but attractive looking ship were 70 feet in length with a breadth of 12 feet and her tonnage was 33 tons. .She was lengthened in 1881 to be 79.5 feet and this increased her tonnage to 43 tons. The Fairy Queen gave the appearance of a private yacht. She had two passenger decks. The exposed promenade deck and the main deck which provided passengers with covered accommodation in bad weather. She sported one small funnel painted red and black with two white and one black rings - the colours of the Glasgow and Inveraray Steam Packet Company. She carried no masts.
The Rutherglen Reformer reported on Saturday March 9 1878 about the launch of the SS Fairy Queen - “Last week a recently finished vessel named “The Fairy Queen,” constructed by this firm was launched from the banks of Loch Eck – being intended to ply regularly on the loch in connection with the favourite steamer “Lord of the Isles.” The Fairy Queen is a very handsome crew steamer, 70 feet in length, having a saloon deck; and she will be licensed to carry upwards of 150 passengers, and will steam at about 12 miles an hour. After being erected at Rutherglen, from model and plans supplied to Mr McKecknie, manager to the firm, the steamer was taken asunder and conveyed to the banks of Lock Eck, where she was put together again and finished complete. The launch took place in presence of the directors of the company and a number of people from the surrounding district. A party partook of cake and wine in the saloon and thereafter, steam being up, they had a short run up the loch and proved the working power of the machinery. The official trial trip comes off next week.”
The Fairy Queen was owned and operated by the Glasgow and Inveraray Steam Packet Company and sailed from Inverchapel , at the southern end of the loch , to just south of Glenbranter at the northern end of the loch.
The excursion typically involved travelling by steam train from Glasgow [Saint Enoch] station early in the morning to piers at Greenock or Gourock then onward by steamer to Dunoon where passengers were met by a utilitarian horse-drawn coach. This would transport the excursionists the 7 mile [12km] road trip to Inverchapel. Passengers would then board the “Fairy Queen” for the leisurely sailing to the northern end of the loch, near Glenbranter. To quote from the old book “Clyde River and Other Steamers” : “The coachmen wore scarlet coats and grey top hats, while at intervals the guard blew a long trumpet, the whole thing making a splendid sight”. Passengers would then disembark, board another horse-drawn coach for the trip to Strachur on Loch Fyne where connection with another steamer to Inveraray was possible.
The Fairy Queen proved very popular on Loch Eck and must have carried a fair number of passengers on her summer-only trips. Her sailings were marketed under the banner of “the famed Loch Eck Tour”. The little steamer must have presented a fine and colourful sight on the loch with her sleek yacht like appearance. Her passengers would have appreciated the stunning views of the rugged and spectacular hills on both sides of the loch as the Fairy Queen wove her way from Inverchapel up the narrow loch.
She sailed on the loch every summer until 1914 when the Loch Eck sailings were suspended due to the outbreak of the First World War. Sailings resumed in 1919 and continued until 1926 when, owing to the age of the steamer, the improvements to the road network and the introduction of motor buses [replacing the Loch Eck steamer section of the tour] sailings were discontinued. The little steamer was then withdrawn from service and quietly dismantled by the loch side.
The Loch Eck excursion did, however, continue for many years thereafter. The Loch Eck steamer sailing was replaced by a motor bus which travelled along the road on the east shore of the loch and, indeed, the bus carrying the excursionists from 1926 onwards was appropriately named “Fairy Queen”.
Rumour has it that several promenade deck chairs were salvaged from the steamer before she met oblivion and are now in the reception area of the Coylet Inn at the south end of Loch Eck. It is sad that very little is known about this colourful little steamer and her history. And it is easy to forget that there were similar steamers sailing on Loch Ossian [at Corrour], Loch Tay, Loch Earn, Loch Awe, Loch Katrine [where of course the screw steamer Sir Walter Scott built in 1899 sails to this day] and Loch Lomond where the large paddle steamer Maid of the Loch is undergoing restoration.
Today, the only tangible evidence of the existence of the Fairy Queen and her sailings on Loch Eck are some old wooden pier stumps in the lochside near Inverchapel. Evidence of a vanished way of life.

The Lockheed P-3 Orion is a four-engine turboprop anti-submarine and maritime surveillance aircraft developed for the United States Navy and introduced in the 1960s. Lockheed based it on the L-188 Electra commercial airliner. The aircraft is easily recognizable by its distinctive tail stinger or "MAD Boom", used for the magnetic detection of submarines.
Over the years, the aircraft has seen numerous design advancements, most notably to its electronics packages. The P-3 Orion is still in use by numerous navies and air forces around the world, primarily for maritime patrol, reconnaissance, anti-surface warfare and anti-submarine warfare.[1] A total of 734 P-3s have been built, and during 2012, it joined the handful of military aircraft including the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress that have served 50 years of continuous use by the United States military. The U.S. Navy's remaining P-3C aircraft will eventually be replaced by the Boeing P-8A Poseidon.
Girls go missing in West Bengal
Every year girls have disappeared from West Bengal. A total of 7917 minor girls were "untraced'' till 2011. Similarly, 3311 minor boys were missing from West Bengal, while another 2149 adult females were untraced till the end of 2011. Most of them are believed to have been swallowed up by the huge trafficking trade that is accustomed to treating poverty-ridden rural West Bengal as its catchment area.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has directed state governments to set up special Anti-Human Trafficking Units (AHTUs) in every district. The need for these cells was felt after a report by the National Human Rights Commission which said in 2006 that nearly 45,000 children go missing every year in India.
An increase of 27% is observed in the Crime of Procuration of Minor Girls, ie., 862 reported cases in 2011 compared to 679 cases in 2010. West Bengal has reported 298 such cases, indicating a share of 34.6% at national level followed by Bihar (183), Assam (142) and Andhra Pradesh (106).
Moreover, in 2011 West Bengal has accounted for 77% of the total 113 reported cases of ‘selling of girls for prostitution’.
A total of 113 reported cases under prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2006 were registered in the country in 2011 out of which highest were reported in West Bengal (25), followed by Maharashtra (19), Andhra Pradesh (15), Gujarat (13) and Karnataka (12).

Description: Condylostylus is a genus of predatorial flies in the order Diptera, suborder Brachycera, infraorder Asilomorpha, superfamily Empidoidea, family Dolichopodidae (credits to the identification of the family goes to Marcelo Medeiros: www.facebook.com/marcel.medeiros.33?fref=gc&dti=35411...), subfamily Sciapodinae and tribe Sciapodini.
They are predators in both the larval and adult stages. They will feed on small invertebrates such as members of the order Thysanoptera, members of the subclass Acari, members of the suborder Sternorrhyncha, other Diptera, members of the class Oligoqueta, members of the order Psocoptera, larvae of the order Coleoptera and larvae of the order Lepidoptera. They thrive in humid habitats, such as marshy areas with abundant vegetation and water streams, muddy areas, river shores, tree trunks and wood. They are important natural biological controllers in nature, and would only cause environmental harm if used by humans as biological controllers for money.
They undergo a full developmental metamorphosis, which means they develop through an egg and goes through the larval and pupal stages before turning into adults. The subject photographed measured, with legs stretched as much as possible, around 5mm, and around 3mm or less as seen in the picture. Their abdomen is slender with a bright metallic coloring, including metallic colors of gold, blue, green, orange and silver. The legs are quite long and the thorax possesses a metallic coloring.
Due to their compound eyes consisting of a very high number of ommatidia (tiny, independent photoreception units that consist of a cornea, lens and photoreceptor cells which distinguish brightness and color and are surrounded by support cells called "pigmentary cells" ), Condylostylus respond in less than 5 milliseconds to camera flashes by taking flight (Source further down). Condylostylus's vision is wide, but relatively poor in resolution.
The first tagma of Diptera, the head, bears the eyes, antennae, labrum, labium, mandible and maxilla. The second tagma, the thorax, bears the wings, flight muscles on the second segment, collar-like structures in the first and third segments, and halteres in the third segment. They possess chemoreceptors to detect smell and taste as well as mechanoreceptors. The third segments of the antennae and maxillary palps bear the main olfactory receptors, while the gustatory receptors are in the labium, pharynx, feet, wing margins and female genitalia, but part of these informations can only be applied to Diptera in general and, perhaps, not Condylostylus.
The wings had no apparent markings besides the venations.
They are very, very widely distributed. The subject portrayed was found in Brazil, Ceará, Fortaleza and seems to be a male. From what I researched in Sciapodinae, the individuals that looked the most like the subject portrayed were the members of Condylostylus; Condylostylus longicornis, to be more precise (Fabricius, 1775).
See? Flies are no simple creatures, they are very, very complex, fascinating and ALL of them are fundamental and important in nature, each with their own environmental roles, no exceptions. In my point of view, flies are wonderful and fascinating creatures; some are predators and populational biological controllers, others are important detritivores, others are important pollinators, among many other very important roles...

After posting pics of Arnhem station at a fresh new phase of its life it's time to get back to the Peloponnesos travelogue. I used the abandonned Korinthos narrow gauge OSE station as a bridging device. It's also in a new phase, but alas a not so promising one - although the municipality of Korinthos has bought it from OSE and possibly is planning a new future for it.
The building style is eastern European modernist, nice and elegant with a concrete skeleton, following all the modern earthquake protection rulest , was built in 1955 and designed by the architect Antonis Dragoumis, The paintings inside are about Corinthian mythology and history. I thank Dimitris for the information about the building!
Some time ago the Greek national railway operator OSE ( (Organismos Sidirodromon Eilados – literally: Greek Iron road Organization) suspended the service on the narrow gauge railway network of the Peleponnesos. The trains had only run two years after a long and costly renovation of this network. The state owned organization was and is under heavy pressure to cut cost and rationalize. It's very uncertain if regular trains will ever run again on this famous narrow gauge network. In 2012 and 2013 a few 'railway fan' chartered trains ran on the tracks. The signalling and crossing equipment were not functional so the speed of these trains was limited and guards were used to secure the railway crossings.
By the way: the scenic Diafokto-Kalavrita rack railway is still in operation and Korinthos has a new station that connects the town with Athens and Kiato through a modern standard gauge railway line. This station is at the edge of town and offers no access to the defunct narrow gauge network.
This is the second part of the mini series about abandoned roiling stock, stations and infrastructure shot at the closed OSE station of Korinthos. Now the passengers and staff are gone, the station and rolling stock (both passenger and freight) are used/visited by the 'usual suspects': street artists, vagrants, homeless people, vandals and photographers.
Acclaimed as one of the world’s most sensational assembly of percussionists, the Top Secret Drum Corps was formed in 1991 by seven talented drummers from the Swiss city of Basel. With 25 drummers and colorguard members, the corps became famous for its demanding six-minute routine performed at the Edinburgh Tattoo in 2003. With its invitation to Edinburgh, Top Secret became one of the first non-military, non-British Commonwealth acts to perform on the Esplanade at Edinburgh Castle.
Since its success in 2003, Top Secret has returned to Edinburgh many times and under the leadership of Erik Julliard, the band is also responsible for the founding of the Basel Tattoo, a military tattoo show similar to the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, now held annually in Basel.
Top Secret has its roots in the rich drumming traditions of the band's home city, Basel, Switzerland, which is known for its annual carnival called Fasnacht. The city is said to have over 3,000 active drummers at any one time. These drummers perform at traditional events such as Fasnacht, the Vogel Gryff, Charivari, and various parades associated with the city's guilds. A Trommelkönig (Drummer King) competition is also held every year by the city's Fasnacht Committee.
Drumming Style:
Basel drumming style is militaristic, derived from the military drumming drills of Swiss soldiers dating back to the Middle Ages. Top Secret in many ways adheres to the military nature of Basel drumming, but differs in many respects. Its drummers play at a much faster rate. Also, while traditional Basel drumming is somber and favours traditional marching tunes (accompanied by fifes during the Fasnacht), Top Secret's drumming style is upbeat and playful. Over the years, the corps adopted many elements from Drum Corps International (DCI), Scottish, and American rudimental drumming. Segments of their routines feature a "rhumba", a drummer's duel (where a number, if not all, of the drummers will fight one another, using their sticks as one-handed swords or fencing foils; at Gymotion 2014, the drummers fought the colour guard, who used their flags as double-blades), drumstick juggling (seen at every show, where the drummers and sometimes the colour guard throw their sticks and flags, respectively, to one another (the colour guard always throw the flags over the bass drummers' heads)), flagpoles and bass drums which produce sparks and other crowd-pleasing details, such as removable bass drums (first seen at Gymotion 2014) and fire-sticks (usually the last act of their show, where the drummers produce two special sticks, light the ends and perform a very fast drumbeat, after which the fire is extinguished). Their 2012 routine at the Edinburgh Tattoo included strobe lights within their drums that appeared to be activated by the drummer's beats; there were also similar lights at either end of their flags.
Perhaps because of their 18th Century uniforms and precision work, the Corps is often referred to as a military band or a part of the Swiss Army, but it is not affiliated with any military unit.
Members: Top Secret's members are highly dedicated college students to drummers with diverse day jobs—bankers, civil servants, factory workers, etc. They give up their free time to practice nearly every day of the year. Due to the demanding nature of the work, its membership is frequently changing.

Singapore : Helix Bridge : Marina Bay Sand
The Helix Bridge , previously known as the Double Helix Bridge , is a pedestrian bridge linking Marina Centre with Marina South in the Marina Bay area in Singapore. It was officially opened on April 24, 2010 at 9 pm, however only half was opened due to ongoing construction at the Marina Bay Sands. It is located beside the Benjamin Sheares Bridge and is accompanied by a vehicular bridge, known as the Bayfront Bridge. The entire bridge was opened on July 18, 2010 to complete the entire walkway around Marina Bay.
The bridge complements other major development projects planned in the area, including the highly-anticipated Integrated Resort Marina Bay Sands, Singapore Flyer, Gardens by the Bay and the 438,000 m² business and financial centre which will be ready by 2012.
An Integrated Resort (IR) is a Singaporean euphemism for a casino-based vacation resort. To date, licenses have been awarded to Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World Sentosa. These are planned to be completed by 2011 and will be the first casinos in the country.
