The northern gannet (Morus bassanus) is a seabird, the largest species of the gannet family, Sulidae. It is native to the coasts of the Atlantic Ocean, breeding in Western Europe and Northeastern North America.

The sexes are similar in appearance. The adult northern gannet has a mainly white streamlined body with a long neck, long and slender wings. It is 87–100 cm (34–39 in) long with a 170–180 cm (67–71 in) wingspan.

The head and nape have a buff tinge that is more prominent in breeding season, and the wings are edged with dark brown-black feathers.

The long pointed bill is blue-grey, contrasting with black bare skin around the mouth and eyes. Juveniles are mostly grey-brown, becoming increasingly white in the five years it takes them to reach maturity.

Nesting takes place in colonies on both sides of the North Atlantic, the largest of which are at Bass Rock (75,000 pairs as of 2014), St. Kilda (60,000 pairs as of 2013) and Ailsa Craig (33,000 pairs as of 2014) in Scotland, Grassholm in Wales, and Bonaventure Island (60,000 pairs in 2009) off the coast of Quebec.

Its breeding range has extended northward and eastward, colonies being established on Russia's Kola Peninsula in 1995 and Bear Island, southernmost island of Svalbard, in 2011. Colonies are mostly located on offshore islands with cliffs, from which the birds can more easily launch into the air. The northern gannet undertakes seasonal migrations and hunts for the fish that form the bulk of its diet by high-speed dives into the sea.

The northern gannet was previously hunted for food in parts of its range, and the traditional practice still continues in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland and the Faroe Islands. It faces few natural or man-made threats, and since its population is growing, it is considered to be a least-concern species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). As a conspicuous and common bird, it has been mentioned in several ancient myths and legends

This gannet was seen in the English Channel, off the coast of western France.

One of the last remaining locohauled siesel services in the UK is the daily Holyhead - Cardiff service, which also was the first train in the new Arriva livery. Last year I came across this train in South Wales (view www.flickr.com/photos/siccodierdorp/4737481465/ and www.flickr.com/photos/siccodierdorp/4752430074/ ), but now this is the other 'end' of it's long journey. Ex Thunderbird 57315 passes Abergele just before the shadows take over.

Was out at Balloch Castle Country Park again today. Tried to find some new interesting spots for photography. Wasn't too lucky, but eventually found this stump. Ended up taking a long exposure and, as you rightly guessed, I've been messing about with tones in lightroom! Anyway, I decided to do some extravagant processing for once!

Have a great weekend everyone.

These Victorian Railways T class diesel electric locomotives were built between 1955 and 1968 and replaced steam engines on branch lines. This is the basic “flat top” (or EMD G8) design.

An earlier 9V version of this model won Best Train at Brickvention 2011. It has been substantially altered since with the inclusion of: more details (handrails, side lights, etc), power functions (2 x PF motors), and more stable bogies.

By getting up early I was rewarded with one of natures most beautiful creations...sunrise. With camera and tripod in hand I made my way to the banks of Mimico Creek to attempt to capture an image that has been in my mind for some time. This time of year the sun is rising almost inline with Mimico Creek.

The pedestrian bridge was completed September 1998. Inspired by Santiago Calatrava, designed by Delcan engineers with input from Calatrava. The goal for the design was a visually interesting bridge that has a relationship to the much more popular Humber Bay Arch Bridge.

blogTO Photo of the Day for November 8, 2011

After a day of low lying, plain white cloud, I was anticipating disappointment at Jökulsárlón. After visiting the lagoon earlier in the day, we decided to go back for the Sunset just in case the Sun broke through the clouds.

There wasn't much going on at the lagoon, it pretty much looked like it did during the day, but there was hope down by the beach with some colour in the sky. After wandering around a bit, I spotted another photographer taking long exposures of the massive icebergs that line the shore, which encouraged me to give it a go.

After fetching Ms P (to see the wonderful icebergs on the beach, and to sample the 1000 year old ice) we headed out to take some photos! Unfortunately, the other photographer was hogging the best long exposure opportunity, so I decided to take some short exposures. This turned out to be a very good decision, since during the time it took to setup this shot the cloud broke up just enough to let some of the beautiful colour through.

I chose this pair of icebergs because the bottom one kinda mirrors the top one. Also, it tells a story, in that the one in the sea is relatively new and retains it's blue colour, whereas the bottom one has been oxidised and is a lot clearer and smaller! I liked this comp because it allowed me to show the Sunset, reflections, and the dark sand in one frame, as well as the detail on the lower iceberg.

It was hard work getting these shots (there are more ;) ), since the sea was eroding the sand away from around my tripod (i.e. I was sinking!), and in some cases forcing me to bail when it got too rough! I'm still removing the sand from my tripod!

I photographed this nameless geological feature in Bryce Canyon National Park last week. It's not on any map (although I have geotagged it for your reference), and none of the park rangers had a name for it. I asked your suggestions for a name, and I appreciate all your comments. I wanted to call it "Peek-a-Boo Wall", but I think Idashum had the best suggestion, and many of you agreed.

The Bundeswehr Military History Museum (German: Militärhistorisches Museum der Bundeswehr) is the military museum of the German Armed Forces, the Bundeswehr, and one of the major military history museums in Germany. The museum is under the technical and administrative chain of command of the German Armed Forces Military History Research Office. It is located in a former military arsenal in the Albertstadt neighborhood of Dresden. The arsenal, an enormous, neo-classical building, was decommissioned and became a military museum.

Early in the 21st century, it was decided to give the museum a major renovation and architect Daniel Libeskind won the competition with a design for an glass and steel wedge that slices through the building at an angle symbolizing the rupture in German history represented by the Nazi era. The museum reopened on 15 October 2011.

Read about my visit to Kwun Tong here:

My Story Telling Blog

The previous time I was here for shooting, it was back in November 2011. Decided to come back on this day before this downtown district further moves forward.

One of the first New towns in Hong Kong, Kwun Tong was, and remains, a major light industrial area. Its population has been growing rapidly, and the demand for housing, medical and educational facilities and services has been increasing.

In view of this, a number of community development projects, such as the redevelopment of old housing estates and the construction of major parks, have been implemented in recent years.

The other side of this progress in transition is the diminishing of history, soon most of these old concrete industrial buildings will be bygone. With this in mind, I've decided to once again visit this district to carry on with the documentation of what is going to be history in the coming days.

While rebuilding my Sea Knight, I really enjoyed being able to use cheese slopes in sand blue. I've been pretty happy with my Osprey (built back in 2011, would you believe it?), but decided that it could benefit from using some cheese slopes as well. I changed part of the roof, the nose and changed a few other small details. I also updated the markings, to represent one of the aircraft used during the Osprey's 'Return to Flight' in 2003.

All was well at the Well this past July for this sunset. I just got back late last night from a two day workshop at the beach. It was pretty spectacular weather this weekend too, but not in this fashion. It rained near constantly Saturday, and Sunday hit us with varying degrees of blue sky, overcast stormy skies, fog and rain. In other words, we got to see quite a few of the moods of the Pacific Ocean. I won't say that despite all that, because good photographers don't operate despite the weather, but rather they work in and with the conditions that exist, we all had a pretty amazing time. There were certainly many great moments but I think my personal favorite was Saturday night at Cape Kiwanda. We showed up for sunset only to find the rain dumping in buckets. So we got all our gear ready and started hiking around the backside of Kiwanda towards the arch. Turns out the wind was funneling up over that area of dunes so strongly that it was blowing all the wet sand away despite the heavy rain, picking up the dry sand and creating a literal a river of sand almost knee deep blowing up over the ridge. It was amazing to behold, murder to cameras, but one of the coolest phenomena I have ever seen at the cape. I also learned that I may be the last person in the world without an IPhone, or at least the only one in this workshop. ;-) Everyone immediately pulled theirs out and started recording video, which was a brilliant idea given the conditions. I have seen the sand blow there before, but never to that degree. The wind made it sound like you were walking by an airplane engine, and you could wade almost knee deep through these wide rivers of moving sand. By the time we all got the other side, we were quite sandblasted and there was grit everywhere, but the looks on everyone's faces were awestruck.

So yeah, the Ocean reminded us all of an important lesson. In a certain real sense, and as much as we like our pretty sunrises and sunsets, to a prepared and dedicated photographer, there is no such thing as bad weather.

Anyway, I am still worn out both physically and mentally from this one. So I had better go start getting ready for work, I am moving a bit slower this morning. But it is definitely a good tired. :-)

Perhaps I will share a few more stories with further posts. In the meantime, I know Greg is already posting images from the first day of the class, you should take the time to hop over to his stream and enjoy the photos he made out there, he got some really cracking shots, some pretty funny ones too.

Oh, before I forget, because when it comes to any self-promotion I usually DO forget, or purposely avoid it. I know, I am bad about that sort of thing. Exposure Northwest has our 2011 calendar up, or at least most of it. We will be adding two processing workshops to the schedule once the dates are confirmed. Update: JADFJGADKJHSFKJGSFKJHSFH 1,000 VIEWS!!!! thank you soo much! :D

A hundred years from now, historians - assuming that by then there are any still free to express their real opinion - will record the 6th of May 2023 as a day of shameful significance in British history. Not because of the costly coronation extravaganza for a flawed unelected king, but for the most sweeping and seemingly indiscriminate crackdown on the freedom to protest and report in almost a hundred years, all cheered on by a queue of historians and political commentators ever eager to heap eulogies on the British monarchy.

As dictators from the Middle East, including the bloodstained tyrant of Bahrain - King Khalifa - arrived in their private jumbo jets, the British military, which also backs these regimes to the hilt, put on an impressive display, to mark the joyous occasion.

King Charles should be fully aware of their crimes as he has met Middle Eastern autocrats over 95 times since the Arab spring in 2011, and is doubtless well briefed, as are obviously the editors of Britain's main newspapers but they preferred not to draw their readers' attention to the murderous record of the monarch's VIP guests.

www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-02-24-charles-of-ara...

Instead they reminded us that there was "a time and place for everything" as hundreds, including many families with their children, wishing to protest were turned away from Trafalgar Square. With an equally self assured righteousness, media commentators dismissed sentimental and quaint concerns raised over freedom of speech, as the lead organiser and supporters of Republic UK as well as activists from Just Stop Oil and Animal Rising were arrested before they had even arrived at the coronation route.

Also caught up in the net was Rich Felgate, an award winning documentary film director, who was able to dramatically document his own arrest while he was filming a Just Stop Oil protester standing on the pavement in Whitehall. A police officer hesitated momentarily as Felgate told him that he was a journalist, but only seconds after a quick enquiry, the order for the man's detention seemed to have been confirmed (see short clip on the attached Twitter link and a separate link to a review of Felgate's film.)

twitter.com/richfelgate/status/1655199737471959041

www.theguardian.com/film/2023/feb/15/finite-the-climate-o...

Fortunately, a few hundred anti-monarch protesters managed to arrive at Trafalgar Square, some of them presumably because they weren't visibly carrying "Down with the Crown" placards or t-shirts. However, many were not certain where to meet when they saw that the area around the statue of Charles 1 on the south side, which had been designated for the Republican activists, was taken up by a giant wooden citadel-like structure with police officers on the top with video cameras (see my photo www.flickr.com/photos/alisdare/52880437864/in/dateposted-...).

Other protesters had been deterred from attending after it was revealed that the police would be using face-recognition software with at least some of their surveillance cameras. However, those that did turn up were not easily discouraged and soon after the demo started, chants of "Not My King" could be heard from the far side of the square.

Soon afterwards, loud speakers which had been positioned near to the anticipated location that the demonstrators would gather, began to blast out loud martial music to drown out the seditious slogans, while the wooden citadel-like structure erected on the south side of the square seemed to have been designed precisely so as to block all sight of them from both the royal gaze and television screens around the world.

Please let me know what photographs and coverage you have seen of the coronation protests in the mainstream media?

This is a small fishing harbour on the east coast of Scotland. Not a lot of people know it exists and the harbour master wants to keep it that way! He asked me not to name the place if I posted any of my photos online - his wish is my command.

This harbour looks almost exactly like it would have done over 100 years ago and is one of those very rare places where time appears to have stood still. Castle Combe in the Cotswolds and Mdina on the island of Malta made a similar impression on me.

On 14th October 1881, 189 men lost their lives in the east coast fishing disaster. Although most of those men came from larger fishing communities such as Eyemouth, 11 of the 21 fishermen from this harbour lost their lives - proportionately more than any other harbour affected by the disaster.
