The bar-headed goose is one of the world's highest-flying birds, having been heard flying across Mount Makalu – the fifth highest mountain on earth at 8,481 m (27,825 ft) – and apparently seen over Mount Everest – 8,848 m (29,029 ft) – although this is a second-hand report with no verification. This demanding migration has long puzzled physiologists and naturalists: "there must be a good explanation for why the birds fly to the extreme altitudes... particularly since there are passes through the Himalaya at lower altitudes, and which are used by other migrating bird species." In fact, bar-headed geese have never been directly tracked (using GPS or satellite logging technology) flying higher than 6,540 metres (21,460 ft), and it is now believed that they do take the high passes through the mountains. The challenging northward migration from lowland India to breed in the summer on the Tibetan Plateau is undertaken in stages, with the flight across the Himalaya (from sea-level) being undertaken non-stop in as little as seven hours. Surprisingly, despite predictable tail winds that blow up the Himalayas (in the same direction of travel as the geese), bar-headed geese spurn these winds, waiting for them to die down overnight, when they then undertake the greatest rates of climbing flight ever recorded for a bird, and sustain these climbs rates for hours on end, according to research published in 2011.

As you can see, there was a storm coming in - we had hell-acious winds, rain, thunder and lightening throughout the night. Great to be camping in a tent. Once I figured out the tent was withstanding the wind and rain, I was able to enjoy the storm.

Architect: Zaha Hadid

I'm a bit of an architecture nerd so finding an Hadid building in Miami was thrilling for me. It's still not open yet despite the websites claim. More photos to come.

Dame Zaha Mohammad Hadid DBE RA (Arabic: زها حديد‎ Zahā Ḥadīd; 31 October 1950 – 31 March 2016) was an Iraqi-British architect.

Hadid was the first woman to receive the Pritzker Architecture Prize, in 2004. She received the UK's most prestigious architectural award, the Stirling Prize, in 2010 and 2011. In 2012, she was made a Dame by Elizabeth II for services to architecture, and in 2015 she became the first and only woman to be awarded the Royal Gold Medal from the Royal Institute of British Architects.

She was described by The Guardian of London as the "Queen of the curve", who "liberated architectural geometry, giving it a whole new expressive identity". Her major works include the aquatic centre for the London 2012 Olympics, Michigan State University's Broad Art Museum in the US, the MAXXI Museum in Rome, the Guangzhou Opera House in China, and the Beijing Daxing International Airport, also in China. Some of her awards have been presented posthumously, including the statuette for the 2017 Brit Awards. Several of her buildings were still under construction at the time of her death, including the Daxing airport and the Al Wakrah Stadium in Qatar, a venue for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

One Thousand Museum is a high-rise residential condominium under construction in Miami, Florida, United States. The deep foundation required drilling to record depths of over 170 feet (52 m) by HJ Foundation. The 62-story building is expected to rise over 709 feet (216 m) when completed in 2018, making it one of the tallest buildings in Miami. The depths of two auger-cast piles broke a record for Miami-Dade County that had recently been set by HJ Foundation at the Porsche Design Tower in Sunny Isles Beach. The building, which is located at 1000 Biscayne Boulevard, across from Museum Park, was designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Zaha Hadid. After the death of Hadid, the Project Director of Zaha Hadid Architects, Chris Lepine, completed the project. The exotic design of the building features a curving exoskeleton partially obscuring the balconies that also serves structural purposes, allowing the interior space to have fewer columns. To meet the architect's designs of smoothness and finish, the columns were finished with glass fiber reinforced concrete permanent form works. The effect of the design and height on wind loading is part of the reason the foundation had to be exceptionally deep. The building is considered ultra-luxury, containing about 83 large units priced at about double the cost per square foot of nearby condominium towers, with amenities possibly including a rooftop helipad.

It's tough, keeping up with all the social networking, the blogging, the posting photos, the tweets… the world. It's a full-time job, really. How do you manage, world?!

Anyway, I updated commenting on the blog today, so that it's much easier. But, if you're, you know, enjoying it and stuff, but maybe annoyed with some aspect, feel free to let me know so I can improve the thing. More about that, blogged!

PS: What's really cool about this image is that I shot it last winter as I planted all my little succulents. And now, they're so much bigger. They're like kids. Who don't talk back. It's awesome.

The white-sided jackrabbit (Lepus callotis), also known as the Mexican hare, is a jackrabbit found in a limited range in North America, from southern New Mexico to northwestern and central Mexico.

The white-sided jackrabbit's body length ranges from 16 to 30 in (41 to 76 cm) long. Its tail grows to lengths of 1 to 4 in (2.5 to 10.2 cm). Its legs grow from 4 to 6 in (10 to 15 cm) in the front and the back legs can grow from 6 to 12 in (15 to 30 cm) long. The white-sided jackrabbit's ears grow 2 to 6 in (5.1 to 15.2 cm) when fully grown. The fore paws have five toes while the back paws have four. All toes end in sturdy claws. Some sexual dimorphism is present in this species; females are generally larger than the males.

Most activity of the white-sided jackrabbit occurs during the night or at dusk, particularly on clear nights with bright moonlight. Its activity may be limited by cloud cover, precipitation, and wind, but temperature has little effect. Its escape behavior consists of alternately flashing its white sides when running away. The white-sided jackrabbit, when escaping, makes rather long, high leaps. When startled by or alarmed by a predator, it leaps straight upwards while extending the hind legs and flashing the white sides. In its resting position, a white-sided jackrabbit is camouflaged with its surroundings. The long hind legs and feet are adapted for speed, giving the animal lift and an ability to run in a zig-zag fashion that surpasses its pursuers. The long ears serve to locate sound, as well as regulate temperature when they are raised like a fan to catch passing breezes in hot conditions. The eyes, like those of most nocturnal or crepuscular animals, are laterally arranged, giving them a complete field of vision (360°). As a result, approaching danger can be perceived in advance.

The diet of the white-sided jackrabbit consists primarily of grasses including buffalograss, tobosagrass, fiddleneck, wolftail, blue grama, vine mesquite, ring muhly, wooly Indian wheat, and Wright buckwheat. The significant nongrass item found in their diets was sedge nutgrass.

Although many species of jackrabbits and hares are considered pests because they damage crops, fields, and orchards, the white-sided jackrabbit is usually not considered a pest and has no known adverse effects on human property. Many species are also sought after for their meat and fur. This is also untrue of the white-sided jackrabbit and it is protected in most of its habitat region.

A 2011 study by the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish determined that the primary cause of decline of the white sided jackrabbit in New Mexico was due to road kill caused by nighttime US Border Patrol traffic.[3]

This NASA Hubble Space Telescope photo of NGC 7714 presents an especially striking view of the galaxy's smoke-ring-like structure. The golden loop is made of sun-like stars that have been pulled deep into space, far from the galaxy's center. The galaxy is located approximately 100 million light-years from Earth in the direction of the constellation Pisces.

The universe is full of such galaxies that are gravitationally stretched and pulled and otherwise distorted in gravitational tug-o'-wars with bypassing galaxies.

The companion galaxy doing the "taffy pulling" in this case, NGC 7715, lies just out of the field of view in this image. A very faint bridge of stars extends to the unseen companion. The close encounter has compressed interstellar gas to trigger bursts of star formation seen in bright blue arcs extending around NGC 7714's center.

The gravitational disruption of NGC 7714 began between 100 million and 200 million years ago, at the epoch when dinosaurs ruled the Earth.

The image was taken with the Wide Field Camera 3 and the Advanced Camera for Surveys in October 2011.

Consecrated in 1630, the church was closed in 1946 by the Soviet government, where it served first as a warehouse, and later as a book repository for theLviv Vasyl Stefanyk Scientific Library of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. It would be reopened as a place of worship in December of 2011. Notably, behind Mary's head lies a halo of 12 stars, reminiscent of the EU flag.

Life has been really busy lately. So busy that I haven't had much time to grab my camera and take some photos. I had missed a number of beautiful sunsets in the Bay Area the previous few weeks and I knew I didn't want to miss *all* of them. When the escaype forecast predicted a small chance at a nice sunset, Willie and I grabbed our gear and drove up to Gray Whale Cove in Half Moon Bay, CA.

Ironically Gray Whale Cove was the first place that Willie and I photographed together, back in 2011. I had just found out that there was another guy at work who was getting into photography and a friend suggested we go out and shoot together. My photography has grown to an amazing place with Willie steering me to places I never imagined I'd visit. We've explored deserts in the South West, waterfalls in Oregon, mountains in Montana, hiked up rivers, inside slot canyons, blown tires in the middle of no-where, driven through Icelandic blizzards, crawled into ice-caves, witnessed the Northern Lights, hunted secret locations, and so much more.

We knew Gray Whale Cove had a small seastack that is only visible at a low tide, something that this particular evening was going to have. We just hoped the clouds moved a bit more north for us. This cloud bank that you see here was quite isolated, with mostly blue skies all around it. Fortunately for us, it lit up beautifully after the sun dipped below the horizon. The retreating waves carved out shapes in the sand, something I was able to take advantage of in the foreground of this photo. I also loved the way the wave picked up the color of the sun as the waves continued their line-building.

No amount of begging is going to result in anything more than a peck on the head anymore. The babies are on their own and seem pretty good at finding their own food. Still doesn't stop them from begging. The whack on the head does, though. Green background is the lawn about 50 feet behind the perch.

BTW - the man cave suffered a broken axle this morning after moving the wheels to accomodate the chair. I reinforced the structure by making brackets from large eye hooks to hold the axles in place. Lake Baringo is, after Lake Turkana, the most northern of the Great Rift Valley lakes of Kenya, with a surface area of about 130 km² and an elevation of about 970 m. The lake is part of the Great Rift Valley system. It is a critical habitat and refuge for more than 500 species of birds and fauna, some of the migratory waterbird species being significant regionally and globally. The lake also provideds an invaluable habitat for seven fresh water fish species. One, Oreochromis alcalicus baringoensi, is endemic to the lake. Lake fishing is important to local social and economic development.

Nederlands
