The Story
The first state admitted to the Union after the original 13 colonies, Vermont is known as the “Green Mountain State” because of its beautiful mountains covered in evergreen trees. But its maple trees are more important to most American kids. By putting a little metal device (sort of like a water spigot) into each tree, the sap can be collected to make a delicious, brown syrup. Still a favorite with pancake eaters across the country, it was America’s biggest source of sugar until the early 1800s, when cane sugar—the kind you find in sugar bowls now—was introduced.

PERSONAL FUN FACT: This is Rapunzel's iconic outfit from the 2000s. I remember seeing this ensemble plastered everywhere when the Barbie movie debuted. Granted, I never watched it, but I did admire the dolls. I guess that was the whole idea behind making the movie...for Mattel to sell dolls. So the fact that I didn't need a film to prompt me to want the Barbies worked better for them. Anyways, I recall I first had the McDonald's toy version of this Barbie. She had a removable skirt if memory serves me correctly. Of course, the full sized doll dons a removable gown. While my doll's ensemble isn't in the best condition, it is still absolutely lovely. I adore the sheer sleeves, golden glitter designs, and the fabric flower embellishments. I have a weakness for fabric flowers and embroidery. I use flowers similar to this for my own handmade dolly accessories and clothes. My doll technically has her crown, it's just still sewn to her head. It's one of those tiny tiaras that won't stay on once you remove the threads securing it into place. It's interesting that Barbie came with a hair extension when she has "growing" hair (I don't have any of her accessories as you can see here).

Meet Dennis, Daren, and Donald. When I was about 18 (shortly before we strayed away from dollies for a few years), I got really addicted to Ken/male dolls when I fell in love with a 1992 My First Ken (aka Chandler) who I rescued and cleaned up. The doll on the left, Dennis, was purchased during my Ken phase. I'm going to be honest--I felt like I wronged Chandler by including Dennis in the "My Story: Ken" photo because Dennis became sort of...Chandler's replacement. I've always found brunettes more visually appealing and he was just so nice when I bought him second hand. When not the star of the show himself, Dennis was Chandler's friend. They traded off a lot like Heidi and Jasmine and Katie and Ginny.
My most clear memory of Dennis is this: New Year's Eve 2004 they were running a Law & Order SVU marathon. There was this episode about an ADA being entered into witness protection. The next day, Shelly REALLY wanted to include the witness protection program with our doll game. She came up with this (unrealistic but exciting) story: Dennis was a detective. A whole bunch of our favorite dolls were witnesses to various crimes. Dennis was going to move into a house with them and pose as the father while secretly protecting them from their enemies. I don't actually remember much--except making Dennis talk to another detective friend (I think it was Osten aka Color Splash Steven) at the very beginning. So, I'm guessing the game was a flop. But, for some reason, it's the thing I think of when I look at Dennis. I wonder now if I used the unrealistic scenario as an excuse to do the doll swap--switch out one regular character for another--and if Dennis was the leading male after that. That could explain why that particular memory stands out.
The other two men are more recent acquisitions. They were rescued from doll lots in my adult doll collecting years. Daren (the middle) was from the "Filthy Disney" bin of 2011. He feels a very much a part of me now because we were just getting back into dolls when we bought the bin so he was one of the earliest bin dolls of our "adult collecting" generation. Darren needed a lot of love and repair.
Donald is a more recent acquisition. We think we got him in the "Lagoona bin" of 2013. Like the "filthy Disney bin," the "Lagoona bin" was a bit squalid (but tame compared to the notorious "Memorial Day bin"). Daren and Donald are quite beat up. Daren's nose is chipped and Shelly never touched up Donald's hair like she did for Daren. I'm fine with that because I want to know Dennis apart. After all, he's definitely one of my favorite dolls.

PERSONAL FUN FACT written by my sister: I've got at least three pairs of these shorts--one for each of my Palm Beach Kens. These are a really awesome color and pattern. I played with mine a lot. Dennis (Palm Beach Ken) was one of my favorite guy dolls. He wore his own shorts quite a bit. While Dennis supplanted Chandler (1992 My First Ken) who supplanted Leroy (Water Jewel Magic Aladdin), I still played frequently with Chandler and Leroy even after getting Dennis. Chandler was often cast as Dennis's friend. Chandler looked HOT in blue. It was his best color. However, I think I remember these even more on Leroy--floral prints were SO his style! Basically, whatever guy doll I was playing with as a main cast member, these shorts were featured in his wardrobe!
