The first successful narrowband tricolor image of Sivan 2?
Little is known about the nebula Sivan 2 (Siv 2) beyond it lying approximately 4500 light years away and having a high concentration Hydrogen. To my knowledge there are only a small number of existing images of this object. Of those, the earliest belongs to astrophysicist J.P. Sivan, who discovered it in 1974 (articles.adsabs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/nph-iarticle_query?bi...). This nebula also appears in the monochrome (Hα only) MDW Sky Survey (www.mdwskysurvey.org/). The other more targeted images, though groundbreaking in their own ways, are either only in broadband RGB or RGB + Hα; and as such they only show Siv 2's reddish haze.
Here, I've incorporated 12 hours of exposure time per three narrowband filters: the ionized gases Hydrogen-II (Hα), Sulphur-II (SII), and Oxygen-III (OIII). Of course, electronic color images are captured, stored, and rendered in red, green, and blue pixels, so in my version, the deep reds emitted by Hα are appropriately assigned to the red channel, the light emitted by SII to the green channel, and OIII emissions to blue. Combined they create a richly detailed and vivid RGB color image; but more importantly, this approach reveals cloud structures entirely missed in earlier photographs of Sivan 2. In fact, the strong blues demonstrate and abundance of OIII, which might indicate a specific evolution of the region as, perhaps, an ancient planetary nebula--but I will leave that hypothesis to the scientists.
