The Kaikōura 3 day trial was held at King’s Birthday weekend and attracted 61 solo riders and 7 sidechairs from across New Zealand. This was the 80th year that this trial has been run since it began in 1946.
As usual we rode at three properties over the weekend starting with Trewin’s Farm at Birches Rd, Oaro on Day 1, a return to Rakanuiat Peketā on Day 2, and finished at Schroder’s Farm under Mt Fyffe on Day 3. Many thanks to the property owners and those who went up the week before and set the sections.
The weather was kind again this year with no rain or frosts (That is 2 years in a row!) This meant the properties were as dry as we have seen them. The sections on the first two days were fairly straightforward, however on Day 3 the sections were more difficult, especially for Green and Yellow, so getting a good result meant being at your best on Day 3. The three best things about the weekend were:
1.The great support from families with 11 families having two generations of riders taking part.
2.The top two riders in Red (T2) both being Junior riders. Zack Furniss took out Day 1 overall, Finn Pearce won Day 2, so both were tied at the end of Day 2, then Zack managed to win Day 3 becoming the youngest Expert and Overall Winner of Kaikoura at age 12. Congratulations to both these young riders who showed great skills.
3.The sidechairs which always provide some entertainment. It’s great to watch, though seems a way to make covering offroad terrain more difficult.
Thanks to everyone who supported the event, especially those who travelled from the North Island or the Deep South. It is great to have you join us for the weekend.
Next year will be the 80th Anniversary of the first event held in 1946. We hope you can join Pioneer next year to celebrate this milestone.
Special thanks to Lynette for the photos, despite still recovering from a knee injury that still limits her mobility.
Saturday was supposed to be a big day but it was bucketing down rain, which I learned was typical providence weather. Went to the mall (3rd biggest in America I was told) and bought Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 then came back and played the xbox version for most of the afternoon.
This was taken in my friend's Brown dorm.

Chion-in (知恩院 Chion-in) in Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto, Japan is the headquarters of the Jōdo-shū (Pure Land Sect) founded by Hōnen (1133–1212), who proclaimed that sentient beings are reborn in Amida Buddha's Western Paradise (Pure Land) by reciting the nembutsu, Amida Buddha's name.
The vast compounds of Chion-in include the site where Hōnen settled to disseminate his teachings and the site where he died.
[History]
The original temple was built in 1234 by Hōnen's disciple, Genchi (1183–1238) in memory of his master and was named Chion-in. While the temple was affiliated more closely in the early years with the Seizan branch of Jodo Shu, its 8th head priest, Nyoichi (1262–1321) was deeply influenced by the priest Ryōkū, a disciple of Ryōchū who was the 3rd head of the Chinzei branch of Jōdo-shū Buddhism, and disciple of Benchō. Later Nyoichi's successor Shunjō (1255–1355) advanced this further by citing a biography where Genchi's disciple Renjaku-bo and Ryōchū agree that there existed no doctrinal differences between them:[1][2]
Then Renjaku-bo said, "There is complete agreement between what Genchi and Bencho say in their basic teaching. So my disciples should from now on look at the Chinzei teaching as their own. There is no need to set up another school."
By 1450, Chion-in had become fully under control of the Chinzei branch, but had little direct control, due to the outbreak of the Ōnin War.[1] Numerous buildings in the complex were burnt down in 1633, but were entirely rebuilt by the third Tokugawa shōgun Iemitsu (1604–1651) with the palatial structures that stand today.

What a gorgeous day! Not a cloud in the sky (well, maybe one ...), but absolutely bloody freezing!
Spent the afternoon wandering through the woods round Harewood (remember the waterfall from Day 2??), then decided it would be nice to head Harrogate-wards and climb to the top of Almscliff Crag for the sunset.
It's stunning up Almscliff - you can see for miles in all directions. With hindsight though I should have realised that clear skies don't make good sunsets - need some serious clouds to get good reflections.
Even without the clouds though I think they turned out not bad - hence the fact there's six of them (sorry!!)
This shot was about half a second before the sun disappeared completely!
A gong show is taking place on the aid pitch. There is somebody to the right of the bolts, who was apparently trying to ascend a fix line with just a single prussik, or a single jumar.
We were the second party to get to the top. Behind us was a party of four, then a party of 2, then another party of 4. By the time we rappelled, ate lunch, and hiked to the Mesa Verde buttress, the first party of 4 was still on the aid ladder. Good thing we got an early start.

DOZER, Long-billed Curlew, male, Morro Strand State Beach, Morro Bay, CA
Dozer, the satellite tagged Long-billed Curlew, is back for his 5th season on the Central Coast. He arrived at Morro Strand State Beach on June 17, 2024. This is our first encounter with Dozer in 2024.
Dozer was at Morro Strand State Beach today. He was first observed today in a group of Long-billed Curlews in the dry sand in front of the Alva Paul Creek mouth/lagoon. After the group was seen flying towards the ocean, Dozer was later refound at the edge of the Alva Paul Creek mouth, preening and then settling in for a nap.
ebird.org/checklist/S182763450
_____________________________________________
MV DOZER is the satellite-tagged Long-billed Curlew from Idaho, who, with his buddy Neil, were the first-ever curlews from the Intermountain Bird Observatory’s Curlew Project to migrate directly from Idaho to the Central Coast in 2020.
The 2022 Intermountain Bird Observaroty Newsletter tells the story of DOZER'S first visit on the Central Coast: "Spotted: California Celebrity Making Waves in Morro Bay!"
www.boisestate.edu/ibo/2022/11/01/spotted-california-cele...
Carol Comeau, a local volunteer curlew monitor, has tracked DOZER'S routes from Idaho and back for the last five years. She reports the following arrival dates:
June 20, 2020 (He was encountered for the first time on June 21)
The first of his nests failed due to predation in an alfalfa field, likely due to ravens or magpies. The second nest failure was due to abandonment.
July 8, 2021
Dozer's mate Mimi was outfitted with a transmitter. The birds were mobbing the researchers which is suggestive of a successful nest. One egg was found in the nest that was probably unfertilized and looked like a predator had gotten it.
This season marked the end of BLM funding for monitoring and education.
June 22, 2022
Probably two unsuccessful attempts. Bad weather may have been a factor. There was lots of hail, rain, snow, t-storms, wind-almost non-stop.
June 30, 2023
Two volunteer Curlew spotters that live in Indian Valley saw Dozer and Mimi frequently. On May 20th they noted that both birds were mobbing their truck as they drove down the road. That suggests they may have had a successful nest.
June 17, 2024
No information yet.
However, since his arrival is early, he and his mate Mimi may not have had a successful breeding season.
Researchers know that the timing of the curlews leaving their breeding grounds is based what happened during the breeding season:
1. failed nesters tend to take off first
2. then adult females, who leave their chicks under dad's watch
3. then adult males after their chicks become independent
4. lastly, the chicks head south
Another leftover stashbuster pair of socks. Followed blended pattern 2 then after the heel I just blended whatever I wanted.
Went to Jewellery Quarter Station again, this time to get updates of the new Goodsyard building next door.
Went over to platform 2, then platform 4 (trams) for the views, before exiting the station.
Goodsyard has a fake ghost sign visible from the railway station and tram stop.
Former name Hockley Mills.
This was another sample shot for my next project. I really love this, and this is basically what people want to do to other people in my school most of the time, but we would rather not get suspended and such.
I worked till eight today, I have so much homework, its rediculous. I am going to nap, wake up at around 2, then do homework/study and other things.
Hope everyone has a great thursday

During my last Motorcycle Tour, i found this place. This used to be a Nazi Military Base, used by the German "Luftwaffe" during World War 2. Then, during the Cold War, the French Secret Service took over and installed a radio observation system to listen what the russians are up to... The french left in 1997. Since then, the place lost its military status and was left to just fall apart...
I'm planning on going there soon. The only problem is that there isn't really a road going up there. It's on top of the highest mountain in the northern black forest, which means you have to hike up there for about 2 hours...

A “tree burst” as they are called. This was a cool thing I could do with the DSLR that Freddy showed me. Set a long shutter speed (~1/2), then, when you press the shutter release, zoom in really quickly. Looks like hyperspace from Star Wars, eh? (Loch an Eilein, Cairngorms National Park, Scotland)

This is another image taken around Freeman's beautiful gardens. I used the 'Dreamscape' technique taught in the workshop. If you are shooting digitally, start with a tripod. Compose your shot. Overexposure by 1/2 stop with a large depth of field. Then, open the lens wide open and over-exposure by 1 stop. Also, de-focus the lens enough where the details are obscured by the main compositional elements are still obvious. Take a second shot. Open the first image in Photoshop. Then, open the second image in Photoshop. Select the Move tool ('v' key), hold the Shift key, and drag the second image on top of the first one. Your first image should now have two layers with the out-of-focus layer on top. Change the blending mode to Multiply for the second layer.
If you shoot digitally and use raw files, then you do not need to shoot the second out-of-focus image. Process the first image with an exposure compensation of +1/2. Then, process the raw a second time with an exposure compensation of +1. In the second image, apply a Lens Blur (enough to loose all the smaller details). Change the second layer's blending mode to Multiply. You may need to do a Level adjustment to taste.
Again a ton of light today outside - I only could go to f/2, then the shutter hit 1/4000th! Anyway, still an ok result.

My Expectation Is From Him
"My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him." [Psalms 62:5]
It is the believer’s privilege to use this language. If he is looking for aught from the world, it is a poor “expectation” indeed. But if he looks to God for the supply of his wants, whether in temporal or spiritual blessings, his “expectation” will not be a vain one. Constantly he may draw from the bank of faith, and get his need supplied out of the riches of God’s lovingkindness. This I know, I had rather have God for my banker than all the Rothschilds. My Lord never fails to honour his promises; and when we bring them to his throne, he never sends them back unanswered. Therefore I will wait only at his door, for he ever opens it with the hand of munificent grace. At this hour I will try him anew. But we have “expectations” beyond this life. We shall die soon; and then our “expectation is from him.” Do we not expect that when we lie upon the bed of sickness he will send angels to carry us to his bosom? We believe that when the pulse is faint, and the heart heaves heavily, some angelic messenger shall stand and look with loving eyes upon us, and whisper, “Sister spirit, come away!” As we approach the heavenly gate, we expect to hear the welcome invitation, “Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world [Mat.25:34].” We are expecting harps of gold and crowns of glory; we are hoping soon to be amongst the multitude of shining ones before the throne; we are looking forward and longing for the time when we shall be like our glorious Lord—for “We shall see him as he is [1Jn.3:2].” Then if these be thine “expectations,” O my soul, live for God; live with the desire and resolve to glorify him from whom cometh all thy supplies, and of whose grace in thy election, redemption, and calling, it is that thou hast any “expectation” of coming glory. Amen, hallelujah God bless

This was a waterfall I took with night photos. First it was cropped and then I used the Cutout filter. The number of levels i applied was 4 which gave more definition to its' surrounding, otherwise, it would have blacked out the minature golf course. The edges of simplicity and edge of fidelity work togeter, giving simplicity a 4 the fidelity was applied at 2. Then I enhanced the color replacement with the eyedropper to a copper light brown and added hue and saturation. I did like the effect of the cutout filter and have played with that on other photos. I also liked how it produced a reflection of the trees through the waterfall, which was taken from behind the waterfall.

In March I'll be sketching with pencil (#2) then inking, then shading. Here's a weird cat-dude. Some of the shading I really like, actually.
