With this shot I told the tale of our fabulous good fortune running into a perfectly timed Laurel to Missoula manifest just as we pulled up into Helena: flic.kr/p/2nLG64k
Here's another shot as the pair of SD70ACEs march up through Tobin in this long telephoto view looking downgrade from the Birdseye Rd. crossing near MP 6.2 on Montana Rail Link’s 3rd Subdivision. The state capital of Helena only a half dozen miles east is obscured in a haze of wildfire smoke on this warm late summer day. The duo are assisted by a manned swing helper set of four more ACEs working to boost them up the 2.2% grade to the 5566 ft. top of the Continental Divide about fourteen to the miles west on the original 1883 Northern Pacific mainline, the nation's second transcontinental railroad.

What can I say. I just love a classic class 1 branchline local so here's another take on this location, this time with a nice splash of sunshine to liven up the scene.
CSXT local L004 out of Framingham has arrived af their destination here at about MP QBU 6.2 on CSXT's Fitchburg Secondary, a former New Haven (originally Old Colony Railroad) route. They dropped their train of 18 empty gons on the branchline main and are now working over the hump and down the hill gathering up 18 loads from the three stub ended tracks at the Win-Waste facility.
This customer has breathed new life into the north end of this historic route and now trains run three days a week always with a pair of GP40-2s. And word is they are negotiating with CSXT to up service to 5 days a week which would be a remarkable turnaround for a line many had feared was on borrowed time!
To learn some history of this old school meandering 30 mile long branchline check out the long caption with the earlier post in this series.

In the diesel era, Union Pacific is best known for their double diesels and turbine locomotives however the locomotives that ultimately brought standardization to the Union Pacific can't be overlooked.
In the 1970s this standardization came in the form of EMD's SD40-2. On their own the Union Pacific owned hundreds of SD40-2s, their ranks further swollen by the mergers of the 1980s and 1990s. The dawn of the 21st century called for a new standard, again it came from EMD and their SD70M. When the dust settled and production ended the Union Pacific would roster over 1400!
A chilly afternoon in February 2017 found a pair of SD40Ns teamed with a pair of SD70Ms working the Grand Island 'hauler' in Gothenburg, Nebraska. Nose to nose we can compare lines of 'snoot' 1587 (originally UP 3364) and 4409, UP's workhorses.

Wow.. I'm overwhelmed. Explorer #2 on October 7th 2008
---------------------
This is the first cut of a sequence of still images that were cut together to give a faux 3D look.
It's not exactly a singular strobist photo. It's many.. (most of them were shot with small flashes [nikon sb-800]).
I'm going to update this one as the cut progresses (titles, fine tuning, etc.)
If you look through my photostream, I'm sure you'll spot a couple shots that look similar to the ones used in this animation.
Permission was granted for the music.

Update for those wondering how I went about creating this.
First of all the initial inspiration shot was taken.. just like any other photo on flickr. Completely traditionally. Then, the question was asked... How can this be converted into an animation? For a shot to work with this type of treatment it needs at least three elements that can give the shot a sense of "depth". A foreground element, a background element, and the central focus. The more elements that you have distributed along your z-space.. the better the illusion can be.
So, I shoot all of the different elements for each animation separately. For example, in the shot which featured 3 girls jumping off of the dock I had all three girls jump separately in order to avoid them overlapping each other and to maximize the resolution of each element. 3 girls jumping? 3 separate photos. For this particular example, I also took a shot of the background all by itself.
Then, all elements are brought into photoshop and isolated (using masks). This can be pretty time consuming.
Finally, all of these elements are brought into After Effects and distributed in 3d space on the Z axis. Animate the position of the virtual camera to taste, play around with the virtual camera's depth of field... and voila.
And.. the beauty of it all is that your camera most likely takes better-than-HDTV-resolution images. So, as long as you don't shrink them before bringing them into your compositing application.. you end up with HD video!
I hope that helps :)

Shot of a Star Ferry on a foggy Day.
The Star Ferry operates the following cross-harbour routes (The prices are effective from 15 July 2017):
Central to Tsim Sha Tsui. For lower deck, it costs HK$2.2 on Mondays to Fridays; HK$3.1 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. For upper deck, HK$2.7 on Mondays to Fridays; HK$3.7 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.
Wan Chai to Tsim Sha Tsui for HK$2.7 on Mondays to Fridays; HK$3.7 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.
Harbour Tour: a tourist cruise, making an indirect, circular route to all the stops, namely Tsim Sha Tsui, Central and Wan Chai.
Passengers may use Octopus or tokens to pay for the ride. Tokens are available in the vending machines at the piers. Direct payment by coins at turnstile is no longer accepted.
The Tsim Sha Tsui – Central route does not accept cycles, but the Tsim Sha Tsui – Wan Chai route accepts cycles for an extra charge of HK$14, except during the evening peak hour from Wan Chai to Tsim Sha Tsui.
Star Ferry has announced to provide sightseeing service between Tsim Sha Tsui and Disneyland Resort Pier, which has been emptied for 11 years since its open. This route consists of 2 departures and the round trip fare is $180. Passengers can enjoy views of Tsing Ma Bridge during the 45 journey on a luxury ferry World Star.
The Star Ferry is a passenger ferry service operator and tourist attraction in Hong Kong. Its principal routes carry passengers across Victoria Harbour, between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. The service is operated by the "Star" Ferry Company, which was founded in 1888 as the Kowloon Ferry Company, and adopted its present name in 1898.
The fleet of twelve ferries operates two routes across the harbour, carrying over 70,000 passengers a day, or 26 million a year. Even though the harbour is crossed by railway and road tunnels, the Star Ferry continues to provide an inexpensive mode of harbour crossing. The company's main route runs between Central and Tsim Sha Tsui.
It has been rated first in the “Top 10 Most Exciting Ferry Rides” poll by the Society of American Travel Writers (“SATW”) in February 2009.
Before the steam ferry was first created, people would cross the harbour in sampans. In 1870, a man named Grant Smith brought a twin-screw wooden-hulled boat from England and started running it across the harbour at irregular intervals.
In July 1873, an attempt was made to run steam ferries between Hong Kong and Kowloon. This was stopped at the request of the British consul in Canton, who feared it would enable visits to gambling houses in Kowloon.[4] It is thought that a service to the public was established in the mid-to-late 1870s, after the cession of Kowloon to the British in 1860.
The company was founded by Parsee merchant Dorabjee Naorojee Mithaiwala as the "Kowloon Ferry Company" in 1888. Naorojee bought Smith's boat, and later acquired the steam vessels Morning Star and Evening Star from a Mr Buxoo.[5] The popularity of this means of transport enabled him to increase his fleet to four vessels within 10 years: the Morning Star, Evening Star, Rising Star and Guiding Star. Each boat had a capacity of 100 passengers, and the boats averaged 147 crossings each day. He incorporated the business into the "Star Ferry Co Ltd" in 1898, prior to his retirement to India. The company name was inspired by his love of Alfred Lord Tennyson's poem "Crossing the Bar", of which the first line reads "Sunset and evening star, and one clear call for me!".[citation needed]
At the time regular service was initiated, ships were moored by having a sailor on the vessel toss the rope to another on the pier, who would then catch it with a long billhook. This is still done today.
On his retirement in 1898, Naorojee sold the company to The Hongkong and Kowloon Wharf and Godown Company Limited, at that time owned by Jardine, Matheson & Co. and Sir Paul Chater.
A pier constructed on the western end of Salisbury Road opened in 1906, but was destroyed by a typhoon in September 1906. In the early 1950s, construction of the present twin-piered terminal commenced on both sides of Victoria Harbour, designed to handle 55 million passenger trips a year. The structure was completed in 1957, concurrent with the Edinburgh Place Ferry Pier built on the island side.
At the turn of the century, Hong Kong currency and Canton currency were both accepted as legal tender in Hong Kong. In the autumn of 1912, following a devaluation, the Star Ferry caused a controversy by insisting, together with the tramways, that payment had to be made in Hong Kong currency only. Canton coinage would no longer be accepted.
In 1924 the Yaumati Ferry operated the route to Kowloon in a duopoly. In 1933 the Star Ferry made history by building the Electric Star, the first diesel electric passenger ferry of its kind.
By 1941, the company had six vessels. During the Japanese Occupation of Hong Kong, the competing Yaumati Ferry was allowed to continue, while the Japanese commandeered the Star Ferry for their own purposes. The Golden Star and the Meridian Star were used to transport prisoners of war from Sham Shui Po to Kai Tak Airport. In 1943, the Golden Star was bombed and sunk in the Canton River by the Americans, and the Electric Star was sunk in the harbour. After the war, the ferries were recovered and returned to service.
Until the opening of the Cross Harbour Tunnel in 1972, the Star Ferry remained the main means of public transportation between Hong Kong Island and the Kowloon side.
The Star Ferry operates on a franchise from the Government. It was last renewed in March 1998, the year of its centenary.
We ate at the Nantucket in Crockett, California 25 years ago. When we were there a couple weeks ago, we decided to eat there again. We left about the time the sun went down. And, what a beauty it was!
For this one, I didn't do a lot to it...no textures added...probably a first for me! Using PSE, I duplicated and multiplied the backgroud and increased the red saturation in the water only.

This image, taken by the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 on NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope, features the spiral galaxy NGC 3509. Located some 350 million light-years away, NGC 3509 is an interesting galaxy whose sweeping tidal tail (not visible in this image) offers hints of its evolution.
Hubble observed the spiral as part of a study that looked at the physical conditions in strongly interacting and merging galaxy nuclei, but found that NGC 3509 has a single, relatively undisturbed nucleus surrounded by a swirl of dust lanes. This suggests that the galaxy has not undergone a major disk-to-disk merger. Instead, NGC 3509 may have had a minor merger with a smaller galaxy, or it may be interacting with a small companion whose gravity is creating the tidal tail.
Like most spiral galaxies, NGC 3509 is actively creating new stars. The color red in this image represents near infrared wavelengths of light and showcases star-forming regions along the galaxy’s spiral arms.

The Leeds and Liverpool Canal in Blackburn, Lancashire.
With a main line of 127¼ miles, the Leeds and Liverpool Canal is easily the longest canal in Britain built by one company. (The Grand Union Canal is 10 miles longer but was a later amalgamation of a number of canals.) It links the north west seaport of Liverpool with the Aire and Calder Navigation at Leeds, forming a through route between the Irish Sea and the North Sea. The Millennium Ribble Link now provides a link via the River Ribble to the Lancaster Canal. Extension of the western end past Liverpool Pier Head to join up with the main Dock system & River Mersey was completed in 2008.
The Leeds & Liverpool canal climbs away from the Lancashire plain into the Pennine hills from Wigan, up the famous 21 locks, through the once proud cotton towns of Blackburn and Burnley where Victorian mills can still be seen. The summit level goes through some fine moorland scenery over the 'backbone of England' , plunging through the mile long Foulridge tunnel. It then begins to descend amidst remote and beautiful countryside through the market town of Skipton into the Yorkshire Dales and on towards the bustling city of Leeds and the heart of the West Riding of Yorkshire. Allow at least a week to get from Liverpool to Leeds.
The Leeds & Liverpool is a barge canal, built with locks 60 feet long and 14 feet wide, reaching a height of 487½ feet above sea level on the summit at Foulridge. The locks between Liverpool and Wigan are longer at 72 feet, as are the 2 on the branch to Leigh, where the junction with the Bridgewater Canal allows boats to reach the narrow canals of central and southern England.

This image, taken with the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 on board the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, shows the globular cluster Terzan 1. Lying around 20,000 light-years from us in the constellation of Scorpius (The Scorpion), it is one of about 150 globular clusters belonging to our galaxy, the Milky Way.
Typical globular clusters are collections of around a hundred thousand stars, held together by their mutual gravitational attraction in a spherical shape a few hundred light-years across. It is thought that every galaxy has a population of globular clusters. Some, like the Milky Way, have a few hundred, while giant elliptical galaxies can have several thousand.
They contain some of the oldest stars in a galaxy, hence the reddish colors of the stars in this image — the bright blue ones are foreground stars, not part of the cluster. The ages of the stars in the globular cluster tell us that they were formed during the early stages of galaxy formation! Studying them can also help us to understand how galaxies formed.
Terzan 1, like many globular clusters, is a source of X-rays. It is likely that these X-rays come from binary star systems that contain a dense neutron star and a normal star. The neutron star drags material from the companion star, causing a burst of X-ray emission. The system then enters a quiescent phase in which the neutron star cools, giving off X-ray emission with different characteristics, before enough material from the companion builds up to trigger another outburst.
