First year bird. Very rare in the UK and not seen in Norfolk for 12 years (before late 2013). This individual was the only bird to winter in the UK and joined a small Common Crossbill family.

The town of Winthrop is known for it's Old West theme. In the 1970s, when the North Cascades Highway 20 was nearing completion, local businesses and citizens began planning for tourist passing through the town. They agreed on a western themed restoration, changing the town to what it is today. This tiny old western town with antique boardwalks resembles the 1850s wild west. Winthrop is also known for it's cross-country ski trails with over 120 miles (200K) of groomed trails and many indoor and outdoor activities including the annual balloon festival. On the minus side, in 2012 Winthrop was ranked number 2 "worst speed trap cities" in North America.
