In the cockpit or maybe not: Had to travel to Cincinnati for work. The Cincinnati airport has a wall with the cockpit photo on it and a couple of joysticks for children to play with.

I liked this man’s sharp look at the Toronto Pearson Street Festival which is part of Pearson International Airport’s program to reach out to the community and be a good neighbour. I tapped him on the shoulder and asked his permission to take a couple of photos for my project. He, understandably, wanted to know a bit about the project so I launched into my 100 Strangers spiel and once he was reassured that the photo would not be misused, he was glad to help out. Meet Robert.

We met under the wing of the Boeing 757 airliner where I photographed Ekam, my Stranger #197. The day was so sunny that the best bet for a shady location was beneath the plane. As you might imagine, there are not convenient trees on the runway apron of Canada’s busiest airport! Wanting a bit of variety so the photo wouldn’t be a duplicate of Ekam’s portrait, I chose to pose Robert next to the massive landing gear of this huge plane. He agreed to crouch so that the huge tires would appear in the background.

I thought Robert stood out from the crowd with his shaved head, neatly trimmed beard and moustache, and bright sparkling eyes. He was one of the many volunteers that made this fun event run smoothly. He was in a supervisory role and was circulating around, checking in with other volunteers, announcing when their break times would be, answering questions, etc. He was a busy man and I appreciated his making time for my project.

I was surprised to learn that Robert is 38 (he looked younger to me). He has worked for Pearson Airport for 12 years and is in a managerial position as Fleet Coordinator. He explained that he deals with procuring and deploying the huge variety of vehicles of all types that are required to service a large airport like Pearson.

As was the case with most of the Pearson employees helping out with the Festival today, Robert was putting in a full day as a volunteer after having worked a full week at his “real job.” I really appreciated the friendly, positive attitude of all the volunteers I chatted with today.

Thank you Robert for participating in 100 Strangers. You are now Stranger #198 in Round 2 of my project.
