The 11th of June 2012 is the very last day I saw my Auntie Nadine in this life. I didn't have my camera with me when I saw her otherwise I might have a different photo.
Though I didn't know it at the time this photo perfectly encapsulates my feelings about that day.
Ghostly. Cloudy. Confused. Worn Down.
It was a chance encounter on the street. I had just walked my brother to his truck and was on my way back to my hotel room.
I was walking south on Douglas Street and the light had just changed so there was a crowd of people walking towards me.
Through that crowd I recognized a face. In that moment that face recognized me too. At first we kind of stared at each other with puzzled looks on our faces. Then we both broke into wide smiles.
I hugged her tight, her head barely reaching my chest. My aunties are all pretty short.
We chit chatted a bit. She asked what I was doing in town. I told her Aaron was graduating from university.
Aaron drove by in his car and I said "Look! There he goes!' and we waved fiercely at him.
She was so happy that he'd finished. I think she said "That's so awesome".
I complimented her on her shirt, a denim button up with an indian hummingbird sewn on it.
"I got it from Ruby, who else?" she says with a laugh.
She tells me she's doing well. She has a room at Our Place and gives me her room number.... two something something.
The problem is, I never made it to drop in. The little things of life got in the way. I had to find a new shirt for grad tomorrow. Laundry. Ironing. Eating.
It's really hard to not feel regret over that.
However the brightness of that moment, the charm of a serendipitous encounter with someone you love overwhelms that regret. It allows you to value your time with those that remain.
It also reminds me that I should always take more photos of my family.
