I took this photo on Friday 17th June 1977. Willow Street Allotments, between Nelson Street and Willow Street, Sowerby Bridge. Edgar Habergham of nearby Belmont Street, is putting privet twigs into the soil amongst his peas, so that they have something to cling to as they grow. Harry Haithwaite, of Exeter Street, has just finished working on his allotment and is on his way home but has stopped to talk to Mr Habergham. Both men were members of the Sowerby Bridge Horticultural Society, which had its premises in a large wooden hut on Holmes Road. The hut was staffed by volunteer members of the Society. In Spring and Summer the hut was open on one weekday evening and on Saturday afternoons so that members could attend and purchase items such as seed potatoes, Runner Bean, Pea and Broadbean seeds and fertilisers such as National Growmore, Sulphate of Ammonia, Sulphate of Potash and Bone Meal. Mr Habergham did not have a car so he took his wheelbarrow down to the hut to carry his purchases. His route would be, from Belmont Street, to Willow Street then Bolton Brow, Chapel Lane, Gasworks Road, and cross over Gasworks Bridge to Holmes Road. Click on the photo to view Fullscreen.
