I have been watching the mother robin feed her babies for a few days now. So I was sad to
see one of the babies had fallen onto the pavement from about ten or so feet up in the tree
during today's quick thunderstorm.
OK, sad is a small understatement. I freaked out a little, frantic and crying, while my friend
Sheri was in my kitchen probably thinking I was nuts. Nature sucks.
I grabbed a towel and wrapped it up, set it out of the rain, and its little beak opened and
closed a few times, and I waited. I knew it wouldn't be long. And I knew, too, it wouldn't
have been right to put a bird destined for death back in the nest to contaminate the other
birds and freak out the mother.
So it's still on the back porch until I can bury it, the mother flying around, looking, I imagine.
If I were truly humane, I would have killed the bird, run over it with my car or hit it with a shovel.
How does one do that? Even when it's the right thing to do? My husband can. That's what
husbands are for—to get the spiders out of the house and to put the small, helpless animals
out of their misery when necessary.
Oh, and sex.
And beer? That's to take your mind off the dead baby birds. And move it to sex.
Ahem.

The humble 142 unit has been screeching and squealing its way around the North West for over 30 years but it's days are coming to an end.
Love them or hate them they have done the job asked of them and that was to keep costs on Northern & Western rural and urban lines down, to allow them to remain viable.
Based on the Class 141 (which was in turn based on the Leyland National Bus!) they would never win any prizes in a beauty contest.
