A group of 5 8th grade girls from Ames Middle School visited the University of Iowa Health Care campus on their school career day to learn about medicine at the University of Iowa. During this visit the girls first learned about medical admissions information and the anatomy of the body by seeing and touching real human organs as well as watching videos of several surgeries. The girls then visited the MRI Research Facility where they got to see the 3 Tesla MRI machine and learn about research that is conducted with this machine. Finally the girls learned about neonatology as they practiced tracheal intubation in a model of a baby and spoke with a neonatologist here at the University of Iowa Children's Hospital.
University of Iowa Health Care is committed partners with formal and informal educators and community organizations across the state to advance STEM literacy to inspire the next generation of health care professionals and build a foundation for children to understanding their own health. In FY2014, more than 13,000 school age children were engaged in hands on learning provided by 260 faculty, staff and students.
