Embassy informs about Latvia’s centennial during the EU Open House

On May 12, the Embassy of Latvia offered a chance to learn more about the centennial of Latvia, tourism opportunities, a chance to taste Latvian food and drinks, as well as hear Latvian singing and see Latvian dancing. Singers “Sudrabavots” (Silver Spring) and dancers “Namejs” showcased some of the best traditional Latvian performances during the annual European Union Embassies’ Open House.

More than five thousand visitors could taste Latvian products – chocolate by “Laima”, rye bread by “Black Rooster Foods”, water by “Amrita”, the Riga Black Balsam by “Latvijas Balzāms”, as well as edible chocolate by “Coffee Pixels.” People could also taste Latvian smoked sprats in oil, grey peas with onion and bacon, hemp butter, and long potato chips. Everyone could also pick up free printed materials about Latvian – mostly produced by the Latvian Institute – many asked questions and were interested in visiting Latvia.

EU Open House takes place during the European Cultural Heritage Year and the month of May dedicated to European culture. The focus for the Embassy of Latvia’s program was the country’s centennial.

They wrote: "San Francisco Media Co, owner of many newspapers in the Bay Area, is putting a call for artist to “ decorate” their obsolete and misused newspaper stands. Another effort of a corporation to try to “engage” with the local artist community by asking too many things and not offering a decent honorarium.

As many of you know, my collaborator and friend Eliza Barrios and I have been using these structures to deliver messages that question capitalism, unsustainable economy and other social issues. Today we hit Market Street with a few sentences that confront the local corporative power..."

The publisher of the Bay Guardian, Marke Bieschke responded: Hi Paz and everyone involved in this important action: I'm Marke B, the publisher of the Bay Guardian. Although this contest did not originate with us, we were very concerned with the lack of payment for the artists, especially since our mission is to support local artists (as evidenced by our annual GOLDIE Awards and weekly coverage).

I approached SF Media Co. management about it. We will be offering $200 cash plus $50 materials stipend. There will also be a larger prize for the person with the most creative entry, TBD. It turns SF Media Co had always intended to offer prizes, but had not secured a sponsor yet.

There was no malice intended towards participating artists -- the company has always been highly supportive of the arts, in my opinion. SF Media Co. is far from 1% -- it consists of free, community-oriented newspapers that rely completely on advertising. I wish we could pay the contest winners (and all artists) more.

Our deep apologies for any miscommunication.

On Wednesday, October 12, the British Chamber of Commerce in Korea supported the British Embassy Seoul, in hosting a reception for companies working in the clean energy and maritime sector. About 50 companies attended, many of whom were participating in the Green & Offshore Korea 2022 trade. The reception was held on the 33rd floor of the Park Hyatt Busan. The opening remarks were delivered by Colin Crooks LVO, British Ambassador to South Korea and John Hutchinson, Head of Maritime from the Department of International Trade (DIT) who was visiting Seoul. The BCCK was honoured to play a part in celebrating the success of British companies and their Korean partners in this area.

Soldiers assigned to Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 111th Aviation Regiment, 77th Combat Aviation Brigade, conducted deck landings in the Arabian Gulf, Oct. 11-12. The UH-60 Blackhawk and AH-64 Apache crews took turns landing their aircraft aboard the USNS Alan Shepard to qualify their crews in this type of maneuver. Upon completion of the qualification each set of aircraft was refueled by the vessel and flown back to Camp Buehring, Kuwait. Training exercises like these play an important role in mission readiness and total force capability by increasing interoperability between branches, which is vital for joint collaboration missions.(U.S. Army photos by Sgt. Fairford Church Windows

Text taken from 'St Mary's Church, Fairford, Gloucestershire'. 4th ed 2001. Revised by Geoff Hawkes and Kenneth Munn.

Since 1986 there has been a programme of restoration of the windows by the Barley Studio in York.

The twenty-eight windows have been used to express and teach by pictures the Christian faith for nearly 500 years. No other parish church in the land has retained a complete set of late medieval glass. The plan of these windows illustrated the Christian faith as in the pages of a picture book. Opposite to the twelve prophets, who foretold the faith, stand twelve apostles, each beneath a sentence of the Apostles' Creed, which expresses the faith. Four evangelists, who recorded the faith, are opposite four doctors of the Church, who expounded the faith. Above stand twelve martyrs, or confessors, who suffered for the faith; opposite are twelve enemies of the faith. Within the chancel screens is shown, in the Life of Christ, the foundation of our faith. In the bottom centre panel of the East window stands Our Lord being judged by Pilate. In the West Window is shown Christ judging the whole world.

The Whirlpool Galaxy (also known as Messier 51a, M51a, or NGC 5194) is an interacting[6] grand-design[7] spiral galaxy that is estimated to be 23 ± 4 million light-years from the Milky Way Galaxy[3] in the constellation Canes Venatici. It is one of the most famous galaxies in the sky.[8] The galaxy and its companion (NGC 5195) are easily observed by amateur astronomers, and the two galaxies may even be seen with binoculars.[9] The Whirlpool Galaxy is also a popular target for professional astronomers, who study it to further understand galaxy structure (particularly structure associated with the spiral arms) and galaxy interactions.

The Westmorland County Show is one of the largest one day Shows in the Country and certainly one of the oldest, given that the Society was founded in 1799 and is still going from strength to strength 215 Shows later.

Voted by the Farmers Guardian readers as the 5th top Show and the only one-day show in the top 12!

The Westmorland County Show held on the second Thursday in September each year; attracts over 29,000 people. We pride ourselves on being a major livestock Show, with its heart firmly in agriculture. Sections include cattle, sheep, goats, horses, pigs, heavy horses, alpacas, dogs and poultry, as well as marquees for The Women's Institute, Learning for Life, Crafts from Cumbria, local produce Food Hall, Rural Crafts and over 350 trade stands. Not forgetting the very popular Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling. A colourful event, with many competitors competing in traditional costumes.
