"The original dedication may have been to 'St Anietus', with whom the Saxon Neot has been confused. In the 11th century a small monastery existed here; the early medieval church building (of which the tower remains) must have been smaller than the one in existence today. Rebuilding in granite was undertaken in the 15th century and the fine stained-glass windows are from about 1500. The stained glass is partly original and partly from a restoration done by John Hedgeland, c. 1830.

"There are 16 windows of 15th- or 16th-century workmanship unless indicated: 1: the Creation window; 2: the Noah window; 3: the Borlase window; 4: the Martyn window; 5: the Motton window; 6: the Callawy window; 7: the Tubbe and Callawy window; 8: an armorial window (Hedgeland); 9: the St George window (15th century); 10: the St Neot window (12 episodes from the legend); 11: the Young Women's window (four saints with the 20 donors below); 12: the Wives' window (Christ and three saints with the 20 donors below); 13: the Harris window; 14: the Redemption window (Hedgeland); 15: the Acts window (Hedgeland); 16: the chancel window depicts the Last Supper (Hedgeland; copied from the earliest representation in the British Museum)."

life without diet coke? it's great.

i get pangs of diet coke lust about once or twice a week, really, mostly when i'm buying a snack at the bakery in the late afternoon, and see those small bottles of coke zero in the fridges behind the counter there, or when i'm buying a drink during my train trips; the soft drink machines of deutsche bahn don't offer much for people avoiding soft drinks, ha.

generally, if i'm in dire need of carbonation, i get an apple juice and sparkling water drink, and that's alright, too, as i simply can't drink as much of that as of diet coke, back in the day. so it's just a little, usually.

this past month, i've been drinking lots and lots of water: easily an impressive 3 litres per workday, which supposedly is good for me in oh so many ways.

so quitting my coke habit has been far easier than expected. yay. speaking of habits: left work at 8pm today, 2 hours later than planned. nay.

Up until 1955, this building housed the headquarters of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC). It is now the Shanghai Pudond Development Bank.

"By 1874, HSBC's business had grown so much that the existing premises was becoming cramped. The bank then purchased the Foreign Club, a three storey building at number 12, the Bund, south of the Customs House, for 60,000 taels of silver.

In 1912, the bank made further acquisitions at number 10 and number 11, the Bund, and began construction of the new building. Construction began on 5 May 1921, with the dome capped off on 23 June 1923. According to contemporary press reports, at the time of construction the bank hired feng shui masters to select the time and direction of the first excavation. In accordance with Chinese tradition, coins from around the world were buried in the foundations. Specially minted coins were placed in dark recesses of the building to ward off spirits." Does human brain have some difference? 20.11.12

The human brain has the same general structure as the brains of other mammals, but is larger than any other in relation to body size. Large animals such as whales and elephants have larger brains in absolute terms, but when measured using the encephalization quotient which compensates for body size, the human brain is almost twice as large as the brain of the bottlenose dolphin, and three times as large as the brain of a chimpanzee. Much of the expansion comes from the part of the brain called the cerebral cortex, especially the frontal lobes, which are associated with executive functions such as self-control, planning, reasoning, and abstract thought. The portion of the cerebral cortex devoted to vision is also greatly enlarged in humans.

The human cerebral cortex is a thick layer of neural tissue that covers most of the brain. This layer is folded in a way that increases the amount of surface that can fit into the volume available. The pattern of folds is similar across individuals, although there are many small variations. The cortex is divided into four "lobes", called the frontal lobe, parietal lobe, temporal lobe, and occipital lobe. (Some classification systems also include a limbic lobe and treat the insular cortex as a lobe.) Within each lobe are numerous cortical areas, each associated with a particular function such as vision, motor control, language, etc. The left and right sides of the cortex are broadly similar in shape, and most cortical areas are replicated on both sides. Some areas, though, show strong lateralization, particularly areas that are involved in language. In most people, the left hemisphere is "dominant" for language, with the right hemisphere playing only a minor role. There are other functions, such as spatiotemporal reasoning, for which the right hemisphere is usually dominant.

The Grand Pier is a pier in Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset, England. It is situated on the Bristol Channel approximately 18 miles (29 km) south west of Bristol.

The pier is privately-owned and is one of three piers in the town together with Birnbeck Pier, which stands derelict awaiting possible restoration and the much shorter SeaQuarium aquarium built towards the south end of the seafront. It is supported by 600 iron piles, and is 400 metres (1,300 ft) long. It has been damaged by fire on two occasions in 1930 and 2008.

Following the latter fire, which completely destroyed the pavilion, the pier was rebuilt at a cost of £39 million and reopened on 23 October 2010.

Oh, happy, happy,” glowed the comet Demereaux, her tail scattering asteroid dust as she sped along the ellipse of her orbit. The King had appointed her his messenger to carry the news of the Great Celebration, and Demereaux loved to be the bearer of good news. “To the Field of Stars,” she called. “A marriage of Great Celebration is near.”

Here in space, as well as in many other places, the King had much to do, but here his majesty blazed forth, here there were no disguises. His feet spanned a galaxy, a corona of light spangled his forehead, and starshine, like brilliants, dazzled in his eyes. He spun new moons and flung them forth. He cast fresh stars into the nighttime eons. When things were disappointing down below, solace was here in these acts of creation, and once spun into being, these created things stayed ordered. Here the Emperor of All, his Father, was close, and they wandered through the worlds together and talked of the wonder of the ways of heaven and of earth.

And now the wedding of his beloved friends was near. Another wobbling tilt of the world, and the Great Celebration would be at hand. All the celestial beings loved to bend near when happy ceremonies took place below. ln readiness, wispy arches of the Milky Way had already draped themselves in the skies beyond the Field of Stars, and the twinkling hosts waited for the word that would gather them close.

“Time! Time!”

The King smiled as he heard Demereaux call out the good news. Here in celestial space there was no time, but always the endless stretching solitude of being, Nevertheless, the heavenlies delighted in spying on earth time.

The 172L, sold during 1971 and 1972, replaced the main landing gear legs (which were originally flat spring steel) with tapered, tubular steel gear legs. The new gear had a width that was increased by 12 in (30 cm).[12] The new tubular gear was lighter, but required aerodynamic fairings to maintain the same speed and climb performance as experienced with the flat steel design. The "L" also had a plastic fairing between the dorsal fin and vertical fin to introduce a greater family resemblance to the 182's vertical fin.

The 1971 model sold for US$13,425 in the 172 version and US$14,995 in the Skyhawk version. 827 172Ls were sold in 1971 and 984 in 1972.

Hidden: Find four mule shoes. What is missing?

* This building is one of nine locations where the post office has been since 1919

* The mules carried the mail from Arcadia in 1919 and were watered at Buck Lake

* The mules bolted and the wagon, mail and mules went to the bottom of the lake.

It was supposed to have been a routine mail delivery. After all, on a regular basis mail was transported from Arcadia to Lake Placid and back, two days each way. It took a couple of mules pulling a wagon to get the job done.

Along the way, and about four miles south of the Lake Placid Post Office, small Buck Lake was a great place to stop and let the mules get a drink. So, there wasn't any reason for the mail carrier to be concerned. But on this particular day, something frightened the mules and they bolted. The whole rig, the mail and the mules all plunged into the lake that reaches over 60 feet at its deepest. Divers say what remains of that accident lies at the bottom of Buck Lake to this day.

This mural commemorates that tragic event. But it also honors John J. Hoy, Lake Placid Postmaster for 19 years, beginning in 1953. He saw the first canceling machine arrive and a year later, a postage meter was installed. He served as president of the National Association of Postmasters, Florida Chapter. Daisy Shackelford was his postal clerk.

Our first post office was built in a day. On February 5, 1919, folks brought their drygoods boxes and constructed the office over by the railroad depot. Two years later, Angus McAuley got the post office moved into his store and became postmaster. The following year, in February, postal service as handled out of the Arcade Hotel at Interlake Boulevard and Main Street.

While Hoy was postmaster, the building that hosts this mural was built in 1963. The Old Post Office building now houses the Greater Lake Placid Chamber of Commerce Welcome Center, the Mural Society, and the Lake Placid Board of Realtors.
