Designed by Peter Bryant, the UOP Shadow Mark III was one of the ultimate big-block Chevrolet-engined Can Am designs. The trend towards more powerful and faster Can Am cars was a hallmark of the series since its start in 1966. By 1972, neck-snapping acceleration and speeds in excess of 200mph were not unheard of. Peter Bryant’s design for Don Nichols (former power boat racer and the head of Shadow) was a conventional riveted and bonded sheet aluminum monocoque with four-wheel independent suspension and obligatory bigblock Chevrolet V8, bored out to 500 cu. in. pumping out around 800hp. Where the Shadow Mark III differed significantly from its predecessors was in the body design. This was an era where ground effects as they’re known today had yet to be properly defined. Bryant realized that with the enormous power of the engine, top speed was not a problem. He therefore utilized the wind tunnel to design a body shape that would force the car down on its springs, allowing for more grip through the corners. Although this would slow the car on straightaway due to induced drag, Bryant was more than willing to sacrifice a little top speed for increased grip. The Shadow also featured a 74-inch wide rear wing and a 32-inch front wing. Later into the 1972 season, a 74- inch wide wing was tried on the front too. From the word go, the new Shadow was quick. Despite its battles with the Porsche 917/10’s, which had close to 1000hp, the Shadow driven by Jackie Oliver and Carlos Pace scored several top five finishes and a second place at Mid Ohio. For the last race of the 1972 season, in an attempt to emulate turbocharged Porsches, the Shadow was fitted with a twin turbo big-block Chevrolet engine, which produced in excess of 1000hp.

Shadow went on to dominate Can Am in 1974 after the withdrawal on Porsche

Had this image uiploaded previously, but didn't like the colors, and it was way too small. So re-edited it and made it 1920x1080 instead :)

This is the prototype for a Chieftain upgrade developed by Vickers Defence Industries in partnership with German companies RENK, MTU and Krupp-MAK. It was initially intended for Kuwait, with the MoD also interested in upgrading its own tanks. It had a 1000hp engine and enhanced transmission, which significantly improved performance and reliability. The Kuwait order fell through due to the Iraqi invasion in 1990, when nearly all of its Chieftains were either lost or captured, and the upgrade never went in to production. This prototype is therefore believed to be the only existing example and was donated by Vickers in January 2002. Entrance to the vehicle is restricted as some components are still classified as industrial secrets, but it is reported as still being operational.

The Saturday northbound Southerner makes a stop at Oamaru in the mid 1980s, arriving with an unusual DF+DJ+DJ combo on the front.

The DJs were taken off and placed at the depot (which often hosted four or five locos on top of up to 4 shunt locos based here) and the train then picked up a second DF (onto the front oddly enough) before the train headed off on its journey to Christchurch.

At this time the Southerner was always a pair of blue DJ locomotives (1000hp Mitsubishi tri-bo) unless a failure had occurred or the precious new EMD DFs needed to be relocated, which was usually on a Monday. The first batch of 20 DFs had conversion equipment and a second MU plug on the nose to allow the 10 notch, 110v, four brake pipe English and Japanese locos to mate with the 8 notch, 74v North American locos. It must have been on the way out by 1986, as both locos have had the 4th brake hose removed (from the front of the locos anyway) as the numbers of DJs in service declined.Within a couple of years, DC and DX locos would take over. DF connoisseurs will also note the earlier long-hood handrail arrangement (later modified so the downward kink was moved to the rear in front of the radiators) It looks like 6035 has had its blower duct repainted...

The DJs were withdrawn from NZR service in 1990, the Southerner made its final run in 2002, the DFs survive in rebuilt form with turbocharged motors.

I recently stumbled across a few scans of terribly scratched, faded and spotted negatives (I must have spent 4-5 hours on these) and even though they were taken with Mum's old fixed focus, no-settings camera, the passage has time means we can overlook the technical deficiencies of the era!

D36 and D38 were built by English Electric Australia in 1971, weigh 90 tonnes gross and and have a 1000hp CSRKT engine.

The impressive 1,000hp Sunbeam was one of the first purpose-built Land Speed Record cars and the first to reach 200mph. The driver was Major Henry Segrave, a previous record holder at the wheel of a 4 Litre Sunbeam at Southport in March 1926.

The concept for the car came from Sunbeam’s Chief Engineer Louis Coatalen with detailed design work by Captain J S Irving. Power was from two 22.5 litre V12 Matabele aero engines, each delivering 435bhp. These were positioned in line with the driver’s cockpit in between. Transmission was via three-speed gearbox, driveshaft and chains. Actual power output was around 900hp but the 1,000hp title probably appealed to Sunbeam’s directors.

It was estimated that a venue at least nine miles long would be needed to reach 200mph. With nowhere suitable in Europe, Segrave chose Daytona Beach in Florida. The car was largely untested when it arrived in the USA in early March 1927.

The record attempt took place on March 29th 1927, with 30,000 spectators watching from the nearby sand dunes. During the first of the two runs the wind caused the car to swerve and skid violently with Segrave having to drive the car into the sea to slow it down. The speeds achieved were 200.668mph and 207.015mph giving an average speed of 203.792mph and a new Land Speed Record.

Maarten Memorial 2010

The mighty Bugatti Veyron EB16.4 arriving at the circuit of Zandvoort.

After seeing it for the first time in real life with daylight that day, I have to say it's less beautiful as I thought.

I particulary liked this shot due to the heat deformation in the background. The car has 10 radiators but is still struggling to keep cool in summer-ish temperatures.

Some of my shots are used in an article on this event on Autogespot.

The Veyron features an 8.0 litre W16 engine with sixteen cylinders in four banks of four, equivalent to two narrow-angle V8 engines mated in a "W" configuration. Each cylinder has four valves for a total of sixty four, but the narrow staggered eight configuration allows two overhead camshafts to drive two banks of cylinders so only four camshafts are needed. The engine is fed by four turbochargers and displaces 7,993 cubic centimetres (487.8 cu in), with a square 86 mm by 86 mm (3.4 in × 3.4 in) bore and stroke.

The Bugatti Veyron has a total of ten radiators:

4 radiators for the engine cooling system.

1 heat exchanger for the air-to-liquid intercoolers.

2 for the air conditioning system.

1 transmission oil radiator.

1 differential oil radiator.

1 engine oil radiator.

As production of the Bugatti Veyron winds toward its eventual conclusion, Bugatti has created what is likely to be the ultimate version of its world-beating hypercar: the Super Sports. Bugatti sent its official test driver Pierre Henri Raphanel out on Volkswagen's Ehra-Lessien high-speed oval with the first Super Sports to see just what it could do. With representatives of the Guinness book of records and German Technical Inspection Agency (TÜV) on hand, Raphanel made passes around the big oval in both directions achieving an average speed of 408.3 km/h (253.7 mph). [4]

With output bumped up from 1,001 horsepower to 1,200 horsepower, torque swelling to 1,106 pound-feet and a revised aerodynamic kit, Raphanel managed runs of 265.9 and 269.8 mph for an average terminal velocity of 267.81 mph and a new world record for a production car.

The first five production Super Sports will sport the same black and orange finish as the record car and all production models will be electronically limited to 257.9 mph to protect the tyres. The Veyron Super Sports will be publicly shown for the first time at the Pebble Beach in August.

The "BlackWolf" is Valentina's ride of choice. Once a stock Quadra Type-66 purchased for cheap on the outskirts of Night City, it has been rebuilt into a jet black chariot of speed and agility. Perfect for merc-work in and outside of one of the most violent cities in the NUSA.

Swapping the original, and nearly dead, engine for a fuel injected, 1000HP Twin Turbo adapted monstrosity, this is a vehicle that can match speed with both the fastest innercity racers and nitroCHOOH fueled abominations of the Badlands. Tightening the suspension and customizing the wheel base to accommodate new custom tread tires has turned this from once a classic piece of NewAmerican muscle into a vehicle capable of on and off road agility.

Armored with external plating resistant to small arms fire all the way up to light techweapon fire, the chassis of the vehicle has also been reinforced with a titanium roll and steel quick release drop plates to cover the windows in case of ambush by frontal and side automatic fire. Valentina opted for this over CrystalDome tech due to the chance the projection system ever endured damage and was then rendered unusable.

Additionally, a remote "Nanodrone" uplink system was installed giving access to a drone launched from the rear quarter panel that can be controlled by the drivers own Cyberware or follow the vehicle and provide covering return fire in case of attack autonomously. The BlackWolf is also equipped with an advanced communications and mapping system, allowing for communications on shortwave bands commonly used by Nomad factions throughout the interstates of the NUSA to more narrow-wave bands allowing for covert tapping into even Militech channels. Its dash-mounted GPS mapping system allows for quick reference in case one finds themselves lost in the wrong end of the middle of nowhere.
