This Yellow-crowned Night-heron had just caught and swallowed a small fish, and he apparently enjoyed it to the last drop. But he continued to forage the weedy edge of his bayou, despite a group of photographers only fifteen feet away.
Seen with Paul (D200-Paul) and his wife at J.N."Ding"Darling National Wildlife Refuge, Sanibel Island, Florida.
The shapes and sizes of herons and egrets may seem to change as they stand tall, necks outstretched, or when they appear more "squat" as seen in the earlier post below.
I've spent a saturday night alone with my stars, and the beloved clouds to add up for beauty and the great mountains of my land to inspire awe
By the way, I've tested my new Samyang 14mm f/2.8... great lens!
A blending of layers from my overcast grey drive today. The only color is from the "difference" filter.
It is lovely to see the season change, bringing these pretty spring flowers with it.

Verbier is a ski resort in the Swiss Alps, in the canton of Valais. It is part of the "Four Valleys" ski area, which includes the ski resorts of Verbier, Nendaz, Veysonnaz, La Tzoumaz, and Thyon. Verbier is recognized as one of the premiere "off-piste" resorts worldwide. Many top skiers have settled in the resort in order to take advantage of the steep slopes, varied conditions and vibrant nightlife. Verbier is also a popular holiday destination for celebrities, including Sarah Ferguson, Diana Ross, James Blunt and The Crown Prince Couple of Denmark: Frederik and Mary.
Verbier is located in the Val de Bagnes, in the Valais region of Switzerland. The resort lies on a south orientated terrace at around 1,500 metres facing the Grand Combin massif.
Verbier only has one access road, which starts in the town of Le Châble.
The Grand Combin is a mountain in the western Pennine Alps in Switzerland. With its 4,314 metres (14,154 ft) high summit it is one of the highest peaks in the Alps and the second most prominent of its range.
The Grand Combin is also a large glaciated massif consisting of several summits, among which three are above 4000 metres.
The Alps (French: Alpes; German: Alpen; Italian: Alpi; Romansh: Alps; Slovene: Alpe) is the name for one of the great mountain range systems of Europe, stretching from Austria and Slovenia in the east, through Italy, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Germany to France in the west. The word "Alps" was taken via French from Latin Alpes (meaning "the Alps"), which may be influenced by the Latin words albus (white) or altus (high) or more likely a Latin rendering of a Celtic or Ligurian original.
The highest mountain in the Alps is Mont Blanc, at 4,808 metres (15,774 ft), on the Italian-French border. All the main peaks of the Alps can be found in the list of mountains of the Alps and list of Alpine peaks by prominence.
The Alps are generally divided into the Western Alps and the Eastern Alps. The division is along the line between Lake Constance and Lake Como, following the Rhine. The Western Alps are higher, but their central chain is shorter and curved; they are located in Italy, France and Switzerland. The Eastern Alps (main ridge system elongated and broad) belong to Austria, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Slovenia and Switzerland.
The Alps are a classic example of what happens when a temperate area at lower altitude gives way to higher elevation terrain. Elevations around the world which have cold climates similar to those found in polar areas have been called alpine. A rise from sea level into the upper regions of the atmosphere causes the temperature to decrease. The effect of mountain chains on prevailing winds is to carry warm air belonging to the lower region into an upper zone, where it expands in volume at the cost of a proportionate loss of heat, often accompanied by the precipitation of moisture in the form of snow or rain.
These two magnificent Great Blue Herons pondered this site for a possible new home. By the time I returned two days later, they had built a substantial nest at the top of this small mangrove island.

Erica and her friend (sorry; I forgot her name!) were in Times Square checking out the lights ahead of a Broadway show trip. She's a Long Island native, hosting her visitor from Portland. I feel bad not recalling her friend's name, as she was massively helpful holding the giant golden reflector to the right of this shot. That bounced back light from a giant video advertising board to the left of shot, at a neat 45 degree angle up.
As well as appreciating Erica's taking part, she was hugely patient waiting for the video ads to scroll through - I was shooting without a flash, and only a couple of the ads were bright enough to light the shot. Thank you Aerie for an insanely bright peach/white advertisement that offered about two stops more light than the average, and about three more than Bank of America's grim navy blue offering.
We did a quick run of shots looking up Broadway - first going for a neutral look. When Erica and friend reviewed them on the back of the camera, though, she said how much she'd prefer to be smiling, so we fired off a few more frames. This one was the best.
Erica - thank you again for being such a great sport, and agreeing to become Stranger #13 in my ongoing 100 Strangers Project.
In terms of processing, I've included a (near) SOOC version in the comments below. There were a few distracting highlights in the bokeh which I went on to correct in Photoshop, but the main change was to the white balance to give that slightly aqueous glow.
The Namibian authorities have made several arrests and issued public statements that revealing clothing on women are rape provoking and not culturally of an African decent. (say what???..)
Women to be arrested in Namibia for wearing mini-skirts..
Most Namibian's, naturally, are outraged and have already staged a protest and it has gone viral on facebook.
As Alan pointed out, Namibia is already considered to be amongst the top 10 most miserable countries in the world and now they want to control women's dress.....
Well, it has been a fun week. :)
I photographed Lynn agains a black and white backdrop and we dressed her accordingly. The alignment is not 100%, but i was pretty pleased with the funky graphic look.

Good dating (and social history) in the posters outside this R.I.C. Barracks at Brookeborough in Co. Fermanagh.
A Department of Agriculture poster warns about Potato Blight and that "potatoes should be dug without delay". Can't read the last 3 lines (it's like an eye test), but it starts:
"Every Day the Crop now remains
in the ground ???
? the tubers turning "black"...
A little poster seems to be offering a £1 Reward for a Bull Calf (and while we're talking about animals, there's a spaniel? relaxing on the windowsill).
A poster between two of the constables is advertising militia training. Think the poster on the right is also for militia training and it looks as if Royal Innis... is the start of Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers? May be able to date this poster by S.G. Roe who signed the proclamation. Also God Save The King plus E.R. at the top means Edward VII was in power, so this one is definitely 1901-1910.
Date: 1901-1910

Here’s an image of the city of my residence when it’s not flirting with the fog! ;o)
This was also the very last photo I took in 2012 on a very early and cold December morning. Looking back at my Seattle inventory alone, I took roughly 3,700 photos in 2012, almost exactly 100 less than the year before.
It’s odd.
For some reason, I feel this number is extremely low. (Note: My point may have been misunderstood by some -- I find the number 3,700 low for one year, not the difference of 100 images between 2011 and 2012). When I travel to a different city for my portfolio, I can take as many as 4,000 photos in much less than a week. Perhaps, it’s because Seattle is “home”, so I’m never in a rush compared to New York or San Francisco or Alaska where limited time is of the essence. I sleep a lot less when I’m on a photographic mission. It’s terrific!
Wishing you all a fabulous and enjoyable weekend in your relative locations around the planet!

Here is a view of Seattle’s Public Library in downtown. Alongside the Space Needle and Pike Place Market, the downtown branch of the city’s public library system is also a well-known landmark and attraction -- both its exterior and interior -- especially for photographers! Fortunately, I had my ultra-wide angle lens to capture the entire building in this instance, taken during the city’s “Fog Affair” of late January. This was on a Saturday morning, when the city was still in slumber with very few people walking the streets of downtown.
Given the fog cover and emptiness, the downtown area actually seemed abandoned to some degree, except the occasional taxi or automobile that passed by, driving through a modern-day twilight zone and serving as a reminder of the existence of other people.

a tratti ti mostri, certe volte scompari,
in molti temono.

The lake was partly frozen topped with a light covering of snow in patches. I was drawn to the green of the tree which gives a subtle contrast to the prevailing white. (For those old enough to remember, the title is inspired by a Jethro Tull song ).
