For anyone interested in the subject of water, a visit to Holland will be attractive. Holland is a country of water. As the French put it: ‘God created the world, but the Dutch made Holland’. A quarter of Holland is below sea level. Tourists arriving at Schiphol Airport are more than four meters below sea level. The many canals, lakes, dykes, bridges and polders give the Netherlands its special character. The country is an extensive network of waterways, all sorts of accommodation on and near the water, many maritieme museums, picturesque old towns and many attractions and events on the water like here in Marken. The IJssellake is an enormous freshwater lake and perfect for swimming, water sports and fishing. A former island Marken is now a peninsula in the IJssellake. The famous lighthouse of Marken called The horse of Marken, given its name due to its shape ('paard' means 'horse' in dutch). The original was built in 1700, then reconstructed on top of the early foundations in 1839. It's still in use today for the recreational watersportsmen and woman. Generated by electricity now, it gives 6 seconds of light, then 2 seconds in the dark.
Photo taken in Marken, a peninsula in the IJssellake. An ideal place for a relaxing day soaking up typical Dutch scenery.

I am posting a black swallowtail next to a Spicebush Swallowtail so the observer can see the differences. The dorsal views are in the comment section. Notice the Black has seven orange spots on the inner ring of orange spots. It is also possible to see the eye spot with pupil.

"Sometimes you just get lucky":
I’ve mentioned before how the light was relatively poor while I was photographing the Baha’i House of Worship in Wilmette. There was no sunrise and I missed the five seconds of great light by being on the wrong side of the building. Despite these setbacks, I came away with a few great images, predominately because the temple is simply stunning. I was taking a few photographs from whatever vantage points weren’t blocked off by a winter’s worth of deep freeze, trying for something specific. Sometimes when you’re trying really hard to do one thing (get a shot of the white stone temple silhouetted against a pitch black sky) you luck out and get something that is quite the opposite, but better than you could have hoped for. A low cloud ceiling, sodium vapor lights, tungsten white-balance, and a rather nasty bit of lens flare coming off the ridiculous front element of the 14mm all intersected to create some very beautiful colors and shapes in the sky behind the temple. This would be an all-time favorite of mine were the foreground to be more interesting. Perhaps I should drop it to black with a little photoshop magic …. :)

You will see this Norman style tower as you drive down into Uig from the Portree road. This is not an early Norman Tower it is a much more modern ruin. The Uig Tower was built by Captain Fraser, a notorious landlord of the Kilmuir Estates during the period of the Highland clearances, and was indeed originally used to collect rents from the local crofters. This building was used to house a family in Uig into the 1950s.

The genus Argiope includes rather large and spectacular spiders that have often a strikingly coloured abdomen. These are well distributed throughout the world, and most countries in temperate or warmer climates have one or more species, which look similar.
In North America, Argiope aurantia is commonly known as the "black and yellow garden spider" , or "writing spider," because of the similarity of the web stabilimenta to writing.
In England, Argiope bruennichi, where it is found only on the southern coast, and in other parts of Europe, including Germany, is also known as the wasp spider. The East Asian species Argiope amoena is known in Japan as kogane-gumo. In Australia, Argiope keyserlingi and A. aetherea are known as St. Andrew's Cross spiders , for their habit of resting in the web with legs outstretched in the shape of an X, the cross of St. Andrew. The large white zigzag in the centre of its web is called the stabilimentum or web decoration.
In the Philippines, it is known as "gagambang ekis", which translates to "X spider".

William Blake : The Fly
Little fly,
Thy summer’s play
My thoughtless hand
Has brushed away.
Am not I
A fly like thee?
Or art not thou
A man like me?
For I dance
And drink and sing,
Till some blind hand
Shall brush my wing.
If thought is life
And strength and breath,
And the want
Of thought is death,
Then am I
A happy fly,
If I live,
Or if I die.
William Blake (1757-1827)

The Pannonian Plain is a large plain in Central Europe that remained when the Pliocene Pannonian Sea dried out. It is a geomorphological subsystem of the Alps-Himalaya system.
The river Danube divides the plain roughly in half.
The plain is divided among Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Ukraine.
The plain is roughly bounded by the Carpathian mountains, the Alps, the Dinaric Alps and the Balkan mountains.
Although rain is not plentiful, it usually falls when necessary and the plain is a major agricultural area; it is sometimes said that these fields of rich loamy loess soil could feed the whole of Europe. For its early settlers, the plain offered few sources of metals or stone. Thus when archaeologists come upon objects of obsidian or chert, copper or gold, they have almost unparalleled opportunities to interpret ancient pathways of trade.
The precursor to the present plain was a shallow sea that reached its greatest extent during the Pliocene, when three to four kilometres of sediments were deposited.
The plain was named after the Pannonians, a northern Illyrian tribe. Various different peoples inhabited the plain during its history. In the first century BC, the eastern parts of the plain belonged to the Dacian state, and in the first century AD its western parts were subsumed into the Roman Empire. The Roman province named Pannonia was established in the area, and the city of Sirmium, today Sremska Mitrovica, Serbia, became one of the four capital cities of the Roman Empire in the 3rd century.

We had an unusual, clear and very dark sky last night. We are about 3000km from the closest city light... I do not often get this opportunity and had to use it! I tried my best to find the celestial southpole and by analyzing the milkyway for a moment, composed this shot.... and waited......and waited.......!
This is about a 23min exposure at f2.8 with the Nikkor fisheye.
Winter is creeping in on the island and with cold nights I was kind of worried about my baby, standing out there in the cold for so long, but we both survived, there was some condensation on the "eye" which I thought would spoil the shot, but we got lucky...It was worth it!
Enjoy the weekend!

The spectacular Quiraing on the Isle of Skye gives us a classic hill-walk. This circuit heads out above the escarpment and returns along its base. A beautiful hill-walk of 4 hours at the Trotternish. After a hour of climbing the path leads to the edge of the cliffs above the Quiraing. These two climbers head off left and climb steeply up the grassy hillside. The slope briefly relents by a grass-grown drystone dyke. This soon leads to the edge of the cliffs above the Quiraing, with spectacular views looking down. The outlook across the sea and Staffin Bay to the Torridon mountains is equally magnificent. Please have a look at the map. Despite the rain we continued walking.
Two climbers heading for the cliffs above the Quiraing located at the Trotternish on the Isle of Skye - Scotland.

I’m not sure why we’re so drawn to sunsets and why they always make us feel good. We see plenty of them in our lifetime, and we expect vivid colors, but we’re still awe-struck each time we see them. Is it the completion of the day, or how it makes us feel like we’re able to relax finally after a day of intense sunlight and stress?
I often reference those cheesy Corona commercials when talking about just relaxing for a while. I find it hard to really sit still and do nothing, even enjoying a sunset. I don’t know if that’s ADD, restlessness, or my diet of 4 daily cups of coffee, but I’m learning if I really want some clarity, peace of mind and to hear what He has planned for me, then I must dedicate a little bit of time each week to allow my mind and body to go on screen saver for a while to just digest my mind just wander….
I have so much to do… I’m hungry…… sushi sounds good… sushi is expensive… man, I need to pay off that credit card… I haven’t played cards in a while………… poker… poker face… man I don’t get this Lady Gaga… who names themselves after what a baby says..... I remember when Dylan was a baby… I wonder what Dylan is doing… Is Caiden’s homework done… I remember having homework… wish I had homework instead of housework… man I need to pull those weeds… weed.. where’s my brother… haha, one of my favorite movies is Oh Brother Where Art Thou…. I need more pomade for my hair… I could get some at the store… while I’m there, I could get some food.. I’m still hungry………..

Eilean Donan, Scottish Gaelic for Island of Donan, is a small island in Loch Duich in the western Highlands of Scotland. It is connected to the mainland by a footbridge and lies about half a mile from the village of Dornie. Eilean Donan is named after St Donan, a Celtic saint martyred in the Dark Ages. The original castle was built in 1220 for Alexander II as a defence against the Vikings. This century it has become one of Scotland most photographed castles thanks to its picturesque setting on an islet in Loch Duich by the main road to the Isle of Skye. In 1984 it featured in the movie Highlander with Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery.
We just got back from our holiday from Scotland. Despite the rain, rain and rain we had a great holiday. We visit the two cities Edinburgh, Glasgow and went hiking in the Highlands of Scotland on the beautiful isle of Skye. We all go soaking wet everyday but our fireplace at our cottage and Scottish Whiskey kept me warm. Many new photos but have to finish my photo book too ;-) Above photo taken on our way the Isle of Skye. The famous Eilean Donan castle captured just before the start of heavy rain fall.
