Historic naval Ram ship "HRMS Buffel"(Est. 1896) - Fortresse Holland (Hellevoetsluis/NL)

The historic naval port "Groote Dok" area at night. The armor-clad ram ship Buffel along the Koningskade reflects in the water, the recently built houses in the background fit in nicely. It is a very beautiful sight like so many that can be seen in and around this harbor and location.

Hellevoetsluis: Fortresse Holland - Documentairy Photography

Ramtower ship Buffel (Est. 1896) - a heavily armored ram ship in service of the Royal Navy until 1973 as "Hr.Ms. Buffel" or "Hr.Ms. Buffel" (NATO number A 884). Built in 1868 at the Napier & Sons shipyard of Glasgow. The first ship of the Royal Navy without sails, a large armored 2.198 ton ram ship with a steam engine and two propellers. Equipped with an armament of a heavy ram on the bow, several guns and operated by a crew of 150 men.

The ships role was to defend the Dutch coast and later used as an accommodation ship. Nowadays it's a museum ship "Ramtoren schip Buffel" in Hellevoetsluis. Almost symbolically anchored in the "Maritime Quarter" of the "Fortresse Holland" museum in Hellevoetsluis. In a harbor area with various other historical ships and nearby structures all securely anchored in Dutch history for future generations. It's a location with many more national history facts being a important port and naval base for centuries.
