Close Shave

Day 261 of 365

"Close Shave"

I found my niece's missing pencil sharpener yesterday, and I immediately noticed how cool the little shavings inside were. I stored them away like a freak for today's posting. As with any photographic subject, the methods with which to approach an image are infinite. Should I backlight it? Should I blend it into pulp and toss it in the air? Should I set it on fire? Come to think of it.....those are not bad ideas. Why did I do THIS?!!! Stop yelling at yourself. So......after my spoon shoot yesterday, I thought I would go with a similar lighting scenario for one more installation. I placed my piece of black felt on a table, dropped my plexiglass on top, and top-lit the shavings with my Octa box. This look is often used for jewelry. Dare I say it is a little......sexy? Once again I used my 100mm macro lens, as I wanted the shallow depth of field, and I was going with a more abstract look. I am not trying to sell pencil shavings here. After playing around with the angle of the light, I went with this final image. I actually have two other images I liked as well, and perhaps I'll post them in the future. I always say that. I think I selected this image because of the clam-like appearance. The edges remind me of teeth. As far as the background is concerned, that is a white seamless back there. It is picking just a bit of light from the Octa bouncing the light around the room. Because of the very shallow depth of field, one cannot see the edge of the glass, and the top (distant) part of the frame falls into a subtle gradient. The only work done is post was the remove of some dust next to the shavings. Thanks for drifting by!!
