Hookah

Day 244 of 365

"Hookah"

Today's subject is a hookah pipe. I was looking for an interesting manner in which to light a subject with so many reflective surfaces. Needless to say, I had to go large, considering the size of the pipe. Not only did I have to light the pipe, but the environment as well. I shot against a white seamless, but because of the inverse square law, I had to light the paper separately. That is to say, without the back lights working the paper, it goes a dark shade of grey. I used two speedlights for the job, aiming them so that they covered the entire frame. As for the pipe itself, there are three strip banks doing the work. There is one on each side of the pipe, each only a couple of inches out of frame. One can see the reflections of the strip banks all along the edges of the central rod. The similarly sized lights offer a symmetry to the image. Lastly, there is a third strip at camera-left, filling in the front of the pipe. It supplies the third white line of light along the pole. The side lights were actually so close to the pipe that they had to be removed in post. It did not matter because I knew the pipe would be set against a clean, white background. For the record, I borrowed the pipe for the shoot. Thanks for stopping in!!
