Yashica Mat-124G with Yashinon 80mm f/3.5 Lens with Copal-SV Shutter, Circa Feb 1971
Yashica Mat-124 G No. 1024856 Yashinon 80mm f/3.5 Taking Lens No. 1045320 with Copal-SV Shutter (1/500 sec), Circa Feb 1971
In early 1968 Yashica released the multi-format Yashica Mat-124 model that replaced the earlier two separate film format models; the Yashica-24 for 220 film (made Dec 1965 - Nov 1967) and the Yashica-12 for 120 film (Apr 1967 - Apr 1968). The Yashica Mat-124 was made from Feb 1968 to Aug 1970 and was subsequently replaced in Sep 1970 with the Black Mat-124 G having gold contacts.
All share similar specifications. They all have 80mm f/3.5 Yashinon lenses and used the Copal SV shutter having speeds B, 1 - 1/500 sec., MX flash synch and a self timer. They also all had a coupled CdS meter.
The Yashica Mat-124G was a highly successful camera for Yashica and had a very long 16 year life span, with production ending in 1986. The Yashica Mat-124 G was the last TLR produced by Yashica.
There are a few Mat-124G model variations according to Paul Sokk (see yashicatlr.com). Initially the camera was released with the outer feet scale on the focusing knob marked in yellow. This changed to all white near the end of 1970. Additionally, there is a DIN to ASA conversion table at the bottom of the camera back in the early examples, but this was removed circa Aug 1972 - Jan 1973. The example in this collection body No. 1024856 with taking lens 1045320 has an all white meter/feet distance scale on the focusing knob and has the DIN to ASA Conversion Table present in the bottom of the inside of the camera back. Yashica used a used a body S/N coding system that identifies the month and year of manufacture for each unit. This example was the 4,856th unit made in Feb 1971.
