1957… Allen Ginsberg [Venice, Italy] to Jack Kerouac [n.p.] / August 13, / Dear Jack:
- then off thru Spain several weeks to Venice and settle there awhile. I'll be out of touch more or less till I get to Venice. I'd go to Paris but I have only 150 dollars and have to hole up with friend in Venice cheap. Paris costs even more in summer. Don't know where the next loot comes from, but I guess things will work out alright, whatever happens. All mail previously sent to me here or Paterson will be forwarded to
Venice-Burroughs
remaining behind here a month more and will take care of that. I guess I'll receive the books (25 copies) in Venice. Gave [Paul] Bowles my last copy. He's been very nice, dug the poetry, still follows little magazines where he can get them. AG
People think of Venice as expensive and overhyped. I think of Venice in terms of art, history, and literature.
My night itinerary was surreal:
Stop #1
Libreria Acqua Alta
Stop #2
Dinner at Bacaro Vintido 22.
What makes that place special is not just its over 1000 reviews and 4.7 rating but also its shelves of books and rugs on the floor. It makes you feel as if you’re having dinner at an old-fashioned Italian library home library.
Stop #3
This interesting bookshop
Bookshop Damocle Edizioni
This bookshop is in English, Italian & Russian.
And has books in English, Italian & Russian.

Then a long walk to over 100-year-old hotel/museum in a pouring rain. I believe a rainy night in Venice is the most romantic! As long as it’s not flooding.
I love Venice so much! ❤️
