Thuja occidentalis 'Hetz Midget' 22W48 Arb Y1- (Fairview Nurseries, PA 1942) Dwarf American or Eastern Arborvitae Arb, Size at 10 years: 3x3ft., Blue-green foliage, USDA Hardiness Zone 2, Michigan Bloom Month 7-9, In Garden Bed Y1 for 25.6 YEARS (1). Planted in 1997.

 

North Carolina State University: Hetz Midget Arborvitae is a dwarf evergreen conifer in the cypress family. The form is globose and slowly reaches 3-4 feet tall and slightly wider. The scale-like foliage is arranged in dense flat layered sprays.

 

It is widely adaptable to soil types and is drought and alkaline soil tolerant. The naturally round form makes it ideal for foundation plantings. It can also be used as a specimen, in containers or a mixed hedge planting. Tolerant of urban conditions. Deer will browse this plant.

 

Front Porch west, -50F. Native to USDA Zone 3. A 1928 seedling from Fairview Nurseries, Fairview, Pennsylvania. Introduced in 1942. Sun or part shade, well-drained soil. Bottom trim in 2014. Cones in July-August-Sept. Planted on north side of house, in part shade. 2022 note: trimmed to single trunk, severe trim.
