Until Lake Texcoco was drained to prevent frequent severe flooding of Mexico City Texcoco was a major agricultural trading center. The National Agricultural University remains - the Diego Rivera murals in the Chapel in the Rectory are probably his best work.

Texcoco is also where Hernando Cortez assembled and launched his armada for the final assault on the Aztec capital, after his disasterous defeat on the "Sad Night".
