Texcoco, Mexico - Cortez Was Here 1521 - "If I Were A Carpenter" / "Wooden Ships" / Final Assault on Aztec Empire Launched from Here

An obscure, neglected monument to one of the most important events in Mexican history - the launching of the final naval assault on the Aztec Empire. Not in any guidebook or map that I have seen - only know about it from a blog. My guide had to ask at the National Agricultural University at Chapingo for directions. On a main road but easy to miss in the middle of an otherwise undistinguished block. Location on map is approximate.

After being routed by the Aztecs trying to escape with looted treasure on 30 June 1520, Cortez wept against the "Tree of the Sad Night" in Popotla. Upon regaining composure he asked if the carpenter had survived - he had - and Cortez and the other survivors retreated to the area around Texcoco. By 5 April 1521 a fleet of Bergantines was ready and the final assaut on the Aztec capital was launched from here, at the time a promontary on the east shore of Lake Texcoco.
