Years ago, I used to walk in a lovely beech wood. I never could remember exactly how to get there. Today, I found myself in it by accident ! I will not forget again.

Kåkbrinken is the name of this small street in Stockholm Old Town (Gamla stan). The name is first attested in 1477. 'Brink' is not a word really used today, but mostly survives in names. It means a short slope. 'Kåk' is used today, it is slang for 'house' - and Kåken ('the kåk') actually means prison. But that was not what it meant back in the 15th century, then it meant pillory. This street was named after the pillory found on the square at one end of this street. But it is safe to say that most Swedes today would not know that is the case! (I myself, and I've studied history, found out when I read up on the name.)

Ce petit pont de pierres enjambe la première cascatelle de la Vologne que l'on voit en arrivant de la route. Il y avait beaucoup de débit ce jour là au Saut des cuves, près de Gérardmer... d'ailleurs du coup nous n'avons pas fait à regret ( enfin pour moi lol) la rando d'1h30, juste un petit tour car les autres passerelles étaient à fleur d'eau... et les lieux saturés d'humidité étaient particulièrement glissants.
Le Saut des Cuves est une chute d'eau du massif des Vosges située entre Gérardmer et Xonrupt-Longemer. Les « cuves » est le nom donné aux trous creusés dans le fond rocheux par l'eau et les galets tourbillonnants...

Toruń is one of most attractive and historic towns in Poland.
It is famous for being the birthplace ( in 1474 ) of the Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus whose epochal book, De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium is universally regarded as the starting point of modern astronomy.
In 1997 the old medieval quarter of Toruń comprising the Old Town ( 1233 ), the New Town ( 1264 ) and the Teutonic Knights Castle ( mid 13th c. ) was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for having preserved almost intact its original medieval street layout. Toruń is full of Gothic monuments of architecture, all built of brick, such as the Town Hall, The Leaning Tower, numerous churches and many burgher houses around the central market square and the surrounding streets.
If you ever are in Gdańsk on the coast, I recommend driving down to Toruń - it's only 2hrs away on the motorway - the place has a great artistic atmosphere and a lively cafe scene.

This house boat on the backwaters of Kerala left our house boat in the dust. He was in a hurry, perhaps to pick up new guests! Most of the house boats have been renovated from old rice barges. They come in all shapes and sizes and some are quite elegant. All are very comfortable inside.
