Dutch polder -

These Dutch group shelters were intended as shelter for shelling and bombing, if the trenches between the shelters did not offer enough coverage. The principle was based on the way of fighting in the First World War. The bunkers were part of the Vesting Holland.

A few dozen group shelters (type 1 of part II of the VIS) were built between February and May 1940. Because of the rush in delivery, these bunkers are smaller than, for example, the New Dutch Water Line.

These personnel bunkers were called 'Pyramids' by the Germans because of the shape of the bunker.

Steam engine driven saw machine. A steam engine uses a heavy flywheel to drive a huge belt that supplies machine power to a sawing machine connected further away. Thick tree trunks quickly turn into beams in the sawing machine, a somewhat smaller steam crane brings in new trees to be sawn.

An entire undertaking with enormously heavy machines that require a great deal of skill and an eye for safety from the drivers....

Hellevoetsluis: Kerstboomverbranding - Event Photography

The traditional Christmas tree burning is an annual event that takes place the week after Epiphany. According to tradition, January 6 is the date on which the Christmas tree is taken down. Then it is Epiphany, the day on which, according to the Bible, the three Magi from the East arrived in Bethlehem. This holiday symbolizes the end of the Christmas celebration. The Christmas tree burning event is then organized by the municipality, ensures that the trees are collected and plans an evening often attended by many spectators. The event is often enhanced by music and there are stalls selling snacks and drinks. A festive tradition with a warm welcome for the new year.

The traditional Christmas tree burning in Hellevoetsluis is always a very nice event. It starts with the Christmas tree hunt for the children to earn lottery tickets. The municipality as an organizer collects about 1000 Christmas trees that are burned as a large fire under the supervision of the fire brigade on the Zuidfront or Land van Paling. It attracts more and more visitors over the years, children win some nice prizes with the raffle tickets and the atmosphere is very nice. It is actually also the warm welcome of the year, especially with the glow of the fire of 1300 degrees Celsius.

Steam engines - very impressive!. Many historic steam engines, impressive, large and hissing, and beautifully lit in the evening. Not only were they parked somewhere but they also drove around the old city center which got a lot of attention from the public. The sound of the steam whistles has long been the typical sound for another summer edition of the Vestingdagen event.

Many historic steam engines, impressive, large and hissing, and beautifully lit in the evening. Not only were they parked somewhere but they also drove around the old city center which got a lot of attention from the public. The sound of the steam whistles has long been the typical sound for another summer edition of the Vestingdagen event.

The Vestingdagen (Fortress Days) in Hellevoetsluis, an annual multi-day event since 1979. Very popular and with lots of activities in and around the former naval base of the Netherlands. With many historic and vintage ships and vehicles, steam engines, fair and market, various types of demonstrations in the air and ofcourse on the water. Also, lots to do like short boattrips, visit the various musea, watch the naval parade and fireworks show late at night. With about 200.000 visitors in total a well attended event.
