On the island of Dordrecht there is a very striking bunker structure, consisting of casemates, part of the southern front of the 'Vesting Holland'. The casemates were built at regular intervals along the outer, southern dikes of the Island of Dordrecht. They consist of one layer with a kind of shield roof, are completely constructed in clean reinforced concrete and have one access opening. The - almost 60 - casemates were made between February and May 1940 as a group shelter, commissioned by the Dutch State. When the world war II broke out in the Netherlands, they were not really ready yet. Some casemates can also be found at "Kop van 't Land" at the island.

I waited for the sun to rise and shine exactly over that more pole. It was very cold so I felt this was my reward for standing there in the wind on this chilly morning.

Steam engines - very impressive!. Many historic steam engines, impressive, large and hissing, and beautifully lit in the evening. Not only were they parked somewhere but they also drove around the old city center which got a lot of attention from the public. The sound of the steam whistles has long been the typical sound for another summer edition of the Vestingdagen event.

The Vestingdagen (Fortress Days) in Hellevoetsluis, an annual multi-day event since 1979. Very popular and with lots of activities in and around the former naval base of the Netherlands. With many historic and vintage ships and vehicles, steam engines, fair and market, various types of demonstrations in the air and ofcourse on the water. Also, lots to do like short boattrips, visit the various musea, watch the naval parade and fireworks show late at night. With about 200.000 visitors in total a well attended event.

Around 1500 casemates have been built in the Netherlands. The Zuidfront in the Hoeksche Waard was also richly endowed with these group shelters. A casemate is not a combat bunker, but a hiding place for 12 men, about 75 meters behind the place where people would expect the fighting. The fighting itself took place in field positions, trenches, etc. 'The chimney' on top was used for a periscope, to be able to look outside.

The Kil Group had its troops spread over three zones: The Hoekse Waard between the Kil and Westmaas [east-west] called Strijen box [Command commander was the C.28RI, reserve Lieutenant Colonel GW Stroink], the Wieldrecht box on the island van Dordrecht [with the exception of the Canton of Dordrecht itself] and the Moerdijk bridgehead. Two of these zones were subdivided into subjects. For Wieldrecht these were the courses West, Central and East and for the Hoekse Waard the zone around the staff quarters, and the battalion courses Strijen-West and Strijen-Oost. The 14th Compagnie Pioniers belonging to the Group, which consisted of around 220 people, was housed in a school building on the southwestern border of Dordrecht. It is included in the Vak Wieldrecht and discussed there.

During the German attack on the Netherlands in 1940 , Vesting Holland was not only the center of gravity of the national defense, but also a prominent struggle for its preservation. After several thousands of German paratroopers and airborne troops had already landed within the Fortress in the early morning of 10 May 1940 , the first land forces of the German main force at Moerdijk entered the Fortress in the late afternoon of 12 May 1940. Two days later, after Rotterdam was bombed and Utrecht was threatened with an equal fate, capitulation of the Dutch army followed and the Fortress Holland had formally fallen.

The Netherlands is fascinating from a military-historical point of view because of the many lines of defense and fortifications from many centuries that can be found throughout the country. Some of them, such as Bourtange, are a top tourist attraction, but others such as the 18th century Grebbe Line lead a hidden existence. In addition, countless wars have taken place on Dutch territory over many centuries. Outside the urbanized areas, the landscape has often changed surprisingly little over the past centuries and so there is still much to see. Around 's-Hertogenbosch, for example, you can still see remnants of field reinforcements that were built in 1629 by the troops of Frederik Hendrik. That is why it is often worthwhile, well prepared with knowledge and map material, to set off to visit the battlefields of past centuries.

During the reinforcement of the Vesting Holland in 1939 and 1940 , about 570 group shelters were built , especially on the eastern front (the former Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie ) and in the Zuidfront on the Nieuwe Merwede and the Hollandsch Diep . Most of them, even unfinished, are still present, although usually without doors, other parts or appliances. Many now have monument status . A unique double copy is located at the Machinekade in Maarssen . The solid foundation with piles is clearly visible there through the settling of the bottom .

The group shelters in themselves are not rare, but the almost intact line of the Zuidfront Vesting Holland - with the bridgehead Moerdijk - is of great value at regional and national level. It is the only piece of line in the Netherlands that has actually been preserved as a line and can be visibly experienced. The entire line has therefore been designated as a municipal monument.

The Southern Front Vesting Holland was the southern sector between the Western Front and the Eastern Front (east of the Merwede) of Vesting Holland. The authority area included the islands of Voorne-Putten, Beijerland [Hoekse Waard], the Island of Dordrecht and Goeree Overflakkee and the municipalities of Sliedrecht, Papendrecht, Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht, Zwijndrecht, Willemstad, Klundert, Zevenbergen and Hooge- and Lage Zwaluwe. Originally, the Zuidfront Vesting Holland was divided into two defense zones: the Defense Line of the Mouths of the Maas and the Haringvliet and the Defense Line of the Hollandsch Diep and the Volkerak.

Urbex Benelux -

The casemates in the Hoeksche Waard are part of the "Zuidfront Vesting Holland". This Dutch defense line was realized between 1922 and 1940. When the Second World War broke out in 1939, General Winkelman mobilized the Dutch troops. In the period between February and May 1940, various concrete group shelters (casemates) were built at tactical locations along the Haringvliet. The model of the bunkers was derived from the VIS bunkers used in the First World War. Due to the shape of the pyramid-shaped bunkers, these bunkers were called 'Pyramids'.

The Moerdijk-Dordrecht-Rotterdam axis, which runs through the Zuidfront, formed an important approach from the south to the heart of the country. The main task of the South Front was, therefore, to keep this axis open or to close it, as its own troops receded, to support allies or to push through the enemy in the south. The front was occupied from west to east by the Spui Group and the Group Kil2, with a line running almost north-south, direct east of Numansdorp.

The casemate beneath the tower was built in 1937. It is also called a VIS (Prescription Arrangement) Casemate. From the casemate, the river crossing and the Moerdijk bridges were monitored with a machine gun. There are still many original traces to be seen, such as the steel doors, a nearby defense and a shooting hole for the machine gun. Outside there are even traces of impact.

You can climb the air watch tower during Bunkerday. From the lookout there is a magnificent view of the Hollandsch Diep and Dordtsche Kil river crossings and the Moerdijk bridges. On the other hand, a large part of the Hoeksche Waard National Landscape can be seen.

This air watch tower made of prefab concrete is a symbol of the Cold War. This tower was part of a network of lookout towers in the Netherlands, some of which have survived. This is the only remaining tower in South Holland.

In addition, this is the lowest air watch tower in the Netherlands and the only one built on a concrete casemate from the Second World War.

Cromstrijen is a former craftsmanship and now a municipality in the Dutch province of South Holland.

In 1492, Emperor Maximilian of Austria gave several thousand hectares of mudflats, buntings and reed trousers to the southwest of the Oudeland of Strijen as a gift to his secretary, Mr. Gerard Numan. The emperor gave him not only the right to embank this wetland, but also the artisanal rights.

The artisans in Cromstrijen appointed government officials and determined the laws in the area. They had an important voice in appointing the pastors and the school teachers. They also had the exclusive right to fish and hunt. Many of these 'wonderful' rights were abolished in the nineteenth century. The Craftsmanship Cromstrijen, however, continued to exist. Not as a legal district, but as the name of an estate.

The Hoekse Waard (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɦuksə ˈʋaːrt]; pre-1947 spelling: Hoeksche Waard) is an island between the Oude Maas, Dordtsche Kil, Hollands Diep, Haringvliet and Spui rivers in the province of Zuid Holland in the Netherlands. The island, part of the namesake municipality of Hoeksche Waard, is a mostly agricultural region, south of Rotterdam. The Hoeksche Waard consists of reclaimed land (polders): after the Saint Elisabeth flood of 1421 most of the area was flooded. The land has been reclaimed gradually in the following centuries.

Ensemble of concrete structures belonging to the defense line Zuidfront Vesting Holland, built between 1936 and March 1940. Now still consisting of 58 group shelters (also incorrectly called casemates or bunkers) and three casemates. The description concerns the 58 surviving group shelters and three casemates that still remain . Of the three casemates, two were converted and reused by the Germans.

The Kil Group was formed on April 12, 1940 from Brigade C, which until that time had been located in the Eastern Front Fortress Holland [Groep Naarden]. It was a consequence of the change of command in combination with the lessons of the raid in Denmark and Norway that the Brigade was appointed to reinforce the thin security occupation of the Zuidfront Vesting Holland.

The Command South Front fell out as a local command, and was immediately perceived by the Vesting Holland command. Commander south-front became Commandant Groep Spui, which west of Groep Kil was responsible for the defense of the southern front [and part of the coastal waters].

Brigade C was renamed Groep Kil, and the brigade commander, reserve Colonel of infantry JAG van Andel, became Group commander. He was a cousin of the Vesting Holland commander. The command post [with staff quarter] of the Group was located in Puttershoek, which was on the Oude Maas a short distance from Zwijndrecht and Barendrecht. The Group Artillery Commandant had its quarter in 's Gravendeel.

Swallows have made their own terraced houses in the facade of the building in the polder. Research shows that the birds have built around one hundred nests in it. These nests are not protected all year round, but the birds do breed in the same place every year. "A large number of breeding pairs are now using this property, making it essential for the population of house martins in the area," says the municipality of Cromstrijen.

But it is not only house swallows who benefit from the so-called "nature house", but also for the many dwarf bats. "The value for nature is preserved by transforming the home."

All the more so because facilities are provided for several animal species in the building. For example, built-in cupboards for the house sparrow, a barn owl cupboard, fly-in openings for dwarf bats and bats and an insect hotel are placed in the house.

De brandweer brengt verkoeling in de natuur door belucht water in de vestinggrachten te spuiten. Heerlijk oefening op een warme avond en goed voor de natuur.

21 pyramid bunkers (casemates) were found during the inventory. One of the casemates in the Mariapolder was expanded in the 1950s with a comb tower. These towers were built in the Cold War times. The other casemates (20) are in their original state and are located along the Haringvliet, Spui and Kil. The casemates are mostly on dikes, of which the Hollandse Delta water board owns.

There is always a cheerful mood, people still wish each other the best, they dance, sing, and children enjoy the grand fire. An experience that will remain in mind from generation to generation as a beautiful memory

Hellevoetsluis: Kerstboomverbranding - Event Photography

The traditional Christmas tree burning is an annual event that takes place the week after Epiphany. According to tradition, January 6 is the date on which the Christmas tree is taken down. Then it is Epiphany, the day on which, according to the Bible, the three Magi from the East arrived in Bethlehem. This holiday symbolizes the end of the Christmas celebration. The Christmas tree burning event is then organized by the municipality, ensures that the trees are collected and plans an evening often attended by many spectators. The event is often enhanced by music and there are stalls selling snacks and drinks. A festive tradition with a warm welcome for the new year.
