ENG: The Oder River! Is nature cruel or merciful?
The Küstrin fortress was a fortress built in the second half of the 16th century to protect the residential town of Küstrin. It was not until 1920 that its use as a fortress ended as a result of the lost First World War. Küstrin was a magnificent fortified town until it sank into smoking ruins in the spring of 1945. Today its ruins lie like a forgotten Pompeii under grass and scrub on the German-Polish border. The fortress of Küstrin was long regarded as impregnable, but it could not withstand the modern weapons of the Second World War.
There are eighty kilometres from Berlin to Küstrin and the way on the federal road 1/5 leads across Brandenburg. Shortly before the border to Poland it becomes a little abstract, because here not only a wide landscape is to be seen, but also many light girls at the roadside. But my journey continued unperturbed until behind the river Oder to the fortress.
Arrived at the visitor's parking lot, I went straight to the huge Berlin double gate. Just behind it I find myself on the street of a former city. A new street sign on the corner of a house that is no longer a house indicates in two languages that I am on Berliner Str., ul. Berlińska. It's a strange feeling to wander through the alleys, it's as if dead eyes look out of the cellar holes and ice-cold breath stream out. I closed my eyes and rebuilt the magnificent baroque facades and start dreaming. Tram noise, children playing, women with long skirts and so on. A really strange feeling has come up in me here. Another highlight beside the many oppressive alleys are the cellar basements, which are only accessible by guided tour and for a fee. Also the old fortress walls, the royal castle remains as well as the museum "Bastion König" (2€ per person) in the former underground casemates. Or the small stories about the lieutenant and youth friend of the Prussian king Frederick II named Hans Hermann von Katte who was executed there.

Die Festung Küstrin war eine Festung, die in der zweiten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts zum Schutz der Residenzstadt Küstrin errichtet wurde. Erst 1920 endete die Nutzung als Festung infolge des verlorenen Ersten Weltkrieges. Küstrin war eine prachtvolle Festungsstadt, bis sie im Frühjahr 1945 in rauchenden Trümmern versank. Heute liegen ihre Ruinen wie ein vergessenes Pompeji unter Gras und Gestrüpp an der deutsch-polnischen Grenze. Die Festung von Küstrin galt lange als uneinnehmbar, aber den modernen Waffen des Zweiten Weltkriegs konnte sie nicht standhalten.
Achtzig Kilometer sind es von Berlin bis Küstrin und der Weg auf der Bundesstraße 1/5 führt einen quer durch Brandenburg. Kurz vor der Grenze zu Polen wird es schon ein wenig abstrakt, da hier nicht nur eine weite Landschaft zu erblicken ist, sondern auch viele leichte Mädchen am Straßenrand. Aber meine Reise ging unbeirrt weiter bis hinter dem Fluss Oder zur Festung.
Kaum auf dem Besucher Parkplatz angekommen, geht es auch gleich zum riesigen Berliner Doppel-Tor. Knapp dahinter befinde ich mich auf der Straße einer ehemaligen Stadt. Ein neues Straßenschild zeigt an einer Hausecke, die keine mehr ist, in zwei Sprachen an, dass ich mich auf der Berliner Str., der ul. Berlińska befinde. Es ist ein seltsames Gefühl, durch die Gassen zu streifen, es ist, als würden tote Augen aus den Kellerlöchern blicken und eiskalter Atem nach draußen strömen. Ich schloss die Augen und baute die prächtigen, barocken Fassaden wieder auf und fange an zu träumen. Straßenbahn Lärm, spielende Kinder, Frauen mit langen Röcken und so weiter. Es ist hier ein echt komisches Gefühl in mir hoch gekommen. Ein weiteres Highlight neben den vielen beklemmenden Gassen sind die Unterkellerungen, diese aber nur per Führung und gegen Gebühr begehbar sind. Auch die alten Festungsmauern, die königlichen Schloss Überreste sowie das Museum „Bastion König“ (2€ pro Person) in den ehemaligen unterirdischen Kasematten. Oder die kleinen Geschichten über den Leutnant und Jugendfreund des preußischen Königs Friedrichs II namens Hans Hermann von Katte, der dort hingerichtet wurde.
