Yellow Wagtail - Motacilla Flava
The yellow wagtail can be spotted running about, chasing insects on lowland damp marshes and meadows during summer. As its name suggests, it does wag its tail!
Classified in the UK as Red under the Birds of Conservation Concern 4: the Red List for Birds (2015).
The Yellow Wagtail likes damp marshes, meadows and farmland, and spends much of its time running about on the ground, chasing insects disturbed by the feet of livestock. Yellow wagtails nest on the ground or in long grass, using plants, grasses and stems to build a cup-shape which they line with fur. They can have up to two broods, each with five or six eggs. A summer visitor, they arrive from their African wintering grounds from March onwards.
The yellow wagtail is olivey-green above and yellow below, with a yellow face and a black-and-white tail. Males are brighter than females. The similar grey wagtail also has a yellow belly, but has a grey back and black wings. Yellow wagtails have much shorter tails than the other two species of breeding wagtail in the UK.
Distribution
Widespread, mostly in the lowlands of Central and Eastern England, Wales and southern Scotland.

Did you know?
Eight different subspecies of yellow wagtail can be found in Europe, differing in the colour of the males' heads. For example, in France and Germany, you will find the blue-headed wagtail; in Italy, the grey-headed wagtail; and in Finland, the ashy-headed wagtail.

Chrome yellow is a yellow pigment in paints using monoclinic lead(II) chromate (PbCrO4). It occurs naturally as the mineral crocoite but the mineral ore itself was never used as a pigment for paint. After the French chemist Louis Vauquelin discovered the new element chromium in 1797 lead chromate was synthesized in the laboratory and used as a pigment beginning in the second decade of the nineteenth century.

The Yellow-backed Oriole is well-named, as it is one of the very few species of orioles with a yellow back. Indeed, this oriole shows only two colors, yellow and black: the wings are entirely black, the feathers lacking the white or yellow feather margins that are shown by most other species of oriole.
The Yellow-backed Oriole has an oddly discontinuous distribution: it occurs from southern Mexico south to northeastern Nicaragua, and again from Panama south to northern Colombia and Venezuela, but is absent from Costa Rica and from most of Nicaragua. This oriole has a very broad elevational range, ranging up to 2500 m in Central America and almost to 2700 m in Colombia.

Goodbye autumn yellow leaves. Just a month ago, my path to my home, shone in the bright colors of autumn, today all the leaves have fallen down and the trees stand leafless. I love autumn, but this particular time is gray and cold and it takes time to get used to it. A little snow would be welcome.

Today we celebrate a yellow day at Color my World Daily. In my opinion nothing says better « celebration » than a yellow ballon. So here we go, a yellow ballon picture. I’m still testing my new lens (55mm/f1.4) and like it more and more. The only thing is: it takes me a crazy amount of pictures to get a few acceptables one…So many things to learn and so little time … I will keep on practicing…
