Wandering the streets of Zhujiajiao Ancient Water Town in the rain. The town was decorated for Chinese New Year - the year of the pig.

Zhujiajiao Ancient Water Town is a nice destination to contrast the high-rise modern Shanghai, only an hour from downtown Shanghai and well endowed with waterways, 36 ancient bridges, and traditional Chinese-style residences.

It is also very commercialized.

In Chinese astrology, 2019 is the Year of the Pig. So it’s appropriate for me to share pig pictures now. This picture is of a large cute ceramic pig that I saw at a Mexican restaurant not long ago.

The Old City of Shanghai today is a popular tourist destination and the businesses in Yuyuan Bazaar were all decked out to celebrate Chinese New Year, the "year of the pig". Many of the colourful displays included a pig likenesses.

This one was sponsored by Naxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant. This well known 3 level restaurant was established in 1900.

The store traces its origins to Nanxiang, Jiading District of Shanghai.

After 1949, the restaurant was confiscated by the Communist government of China and remains owned by a government-owned company.

Each year in the Chinese calendar has a different name based on an animal and one of the four elements. This year is the year of the fire pig, so it's often (more poetically) called the Year of the Golden Pig.
