during the fascist era (1922-1943), mussolini strongly supported a project of urban renovation in brescia; a whole medieval area was demolished, and many buildings of inestimable historical value were lost - among those, a romanic church and a slaughterhouse that dated back to the 15th century. in exchange, they erected a square surrounded with a bunch of edifices built according to the principles of the rationalism (which in italy we simply call "fascist architecture"). they named it piazza della vittoria, "victory square", because fascists were very optimistic people.

today, in that very square, our chinese community celebrated the lunar new year (don't ask me why the chinese of brescia celebrated it one week after the rest of the chinese of the world).

i was there, wondering what mussolini would have said if he had seen "his" square packed full with asians celebrating their traditions. i bet his dickhead would have blown up for anger.

and i know exactly what i would have said to him: "fuck you, asshole! you might have built this square, but today it is ours, to be shared with who we please!"

Taiwan Lantern Festival 2016 was held in Taoyuan. It was incredible from beginning to end. The amount of people that attended was STAGGERING.

But the lanterns were all incredible and we had a great time. I love the festive nature of these events and the amazing color on display.

Was a trip worth taking.

MAY ALL THE WISHES AND PRAYERS COME TRUE

Ema (絵馬) are small wooden plaques on which Shinto worshippers write their prayers or wishes.

The ema are then left hanging up at the shrine, where the kami (spirits or gods) receive them.

Spring Flower Festival 2016

Chinese New Year is on Monday, but we will be out of town again this weekend for another barn hunt so we went ahead and got our CNY shot in early. It's the year of the monkey this year, so Dolce invited his monkey friend to join in the shot. Gong Xi Fa Cai!

I pride myself in knowing when fireworks are planned around New York, and I can't believe I didn't know about the fireworks show for Chinese New Year until yesterday. I was expecting to see one barge, but I was surprised there were actually three. It was quite spectacular.

I have a gallery of 14 Lunar New Year fireworks shots here.

The Pug dog, Monkee, yes he likes it spelled that way. He was curious and agitated by my camera and I think more so by the clicking. With each frame the furrows on his brows deepened and his eyes...well those eyes.

His personality is very true to the monkey of the Chinese zodiac: The Monkey is very intelligent, hyperactive and strong-minded.

Fact, I think you can tell just by looking at his face,

He represents the unfettered mind freed from inhibitions and guilt. Fact, Monkee is without inhibitions and guilt means nothing to him.

Relieving himself from the heavy burdens of a touchy conscience, the Monkey type will not hesitate to test his theories, experiment and think the unthinkable.

Fact, Monkee is constantly pushing the boundaries.

In his domain, everything is possible. What is difficult, he could do right away; what is impossible may take a little longer.

Fact, He's just that good.

Happy Chinese New Year 2016! Start date February 8, celebrations are ongoing. Good luck to all my Flickr Friends. I have this little monkey on my window sill. He holds a heart to show his love for Valentine's also, lol. The annual Parade in Vancouver's Chinatown is on Sunday, February 14th, Valentine's Day!

Wishing everyone ''Happy Chinese New Year!'' Year of the Monkey. 🐵 ''Gong Xi Fa Cai''

Thank you everyone for your visits, faves, and kind comments.

Here's a shot from early in the fireworks show last night. The widest lens I had would not fit the bursts from the third barge to the left of the frame. The barges drifted closer together during the show and I was able to get all three to fit in the frame.
