The last stop of the all night trek ended with a sunrise shoot. Although I was tired as heck, I pulled off this shot of one of us shooting - this sums up the overnight trip to Shenandoah.

Just a quick touch up in LR.

Miners Ghost Town, Nelson, NV

Alien stories that movies (such as Independence Day and the X files) tell about typically take place in the southwestern part of the USA in areas of Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico, and the list goes on. Nelson, NV in the El Dorado Canyon is a 19th century miner ghost town that a family runs today. They live on the property and kept the alien theme alive. No telling what roams these parts after dark. I would not intend on finding out either. If the aliens don't get you the Mojave Green rattler will.

Technical note: Used a Hitech-Formatt Firecrest IRND 16 stop filter for the long exposure.

A shot I took at the Hoover Dam during my visit to Las Vegas this past spring. This was a place on my bucket list. You can see the trucks on the dock at the river if you look closely.

Some history: Hoover Dam, once known as Boulder Dam, is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the U.S. states of Nevada and Arizona. It was constructed between 1931 and 1936 during the Great Depression and was dedicated on September 30, 1935, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Its construction was the result of a massive effort involving thousands of workers, and cost over one hundred lives. The dam was controversially named after President Herbert Hoover. - Wikipedia

About the bridge in the rear: Located near Boulder City, the Mike O’Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge is a soaring bridge spanning 1,900 feet across the Colorado River. The bridge opened in October 2010 and is located less than a half-mile away from the Hoover Dam. It is the longest single-span concrete arch bridge in the world.

Dantes View, Death Valley Inyo California USA

The view is simply breath taking. If you follow the road starting from the lower left of the photo out to the far hill, you will see people. The cars traveling on the road below (to the lower right along the basin) look like mites - barely visible.

History [from Wikipedia]:

Dante's View is a viewpoint terrace at 1,669 m height, on the north side of Coffin Peak, along the crest of the Black Mountains, overlooking Death Valley. Dante's View is about 25 km south of Furnace Creek in Death Valley National Park [which you can see if you look to the far right of this pano].

Dante's View provides a panoramic view of the southern Death Valley basin. To the south, the Owlshead Mountains, 30 km (19 mi) away can be seen, and to the north, the Funeral Mountains 50 km (31 mi) distant, are visible beyond Furnace Creek. To the West, across Badwater Basin, the Panamint Range rises dramatically to Telescope Peak. To the east is found the Greenwater Range. On very clear days, the highest and lowest points in the contiguous 48 states of the United States: Mount Whitney 4,421 m (14,505 ft) high and Badwater −86 m (−282 ft) can be seen.

Dante's View to South

to the south, the Owlshead Mountains.

east is seen the Great Basin ranges of Nevada.

Because the sun was high, it was a challenge getting the sun rays out and this was a very high contrast scene.

Donald J. Trump has/had a way of provoking/antagonizing people. After the protests of May 28th in response to the death of George Floyd, he made a comment/suggestion about handling the protests that harkened back to the March on Selma (Sunday, March 7, 1965) when the police used water canons and sic'd dogs on the protesters. This really angered Mayor Muriel Bowser and provoked her to respond. Her response was one that demeaned President Trump and showed him he had no control over the city. No president has any control over Washington DC administrative business, its public works, or anything to do with the city. The Capitol building, White House, Monuments, and other Federal buildings under the management of the US Federal Government - relate this to the January 6th storming of the Capitol Building. But naming or remaining streets is out of the control of the Federal Government.

One night, artists and city workers worked throughout the night to paint "BLACK LIVES MATTER" on 16th Street from K St. NW to H St. NW - the first Black Lives Matter Plaza in the world. This was Mayor Bowser's way of showing the President that she [and only she] had the power to change his address. Well kinda. BUT every time Marine One took off from the south lawn, the President had to fly over BLM Plaza - DC's newest monument..

The street signs were changed as well. BLM Plaza became the central place where all of the BLM protests were. An "Occupy H Street" movement start and the Plaza was barricaded off from traffic.

More photos and stories to come.

Playing with my Vixen Polarie - a single long exposure

I was at this spot a couple of nights ago and had to revisit it because I wasn't happy with what I captured then. I was surprised the light pollution was considerably lower tonight than what it was when I first visited this spot. I wish there was more Perseid meteor activity but one did pay me a visit during this capture - the very faint streak between the tree and the milky way. I wanted to capture a long exposure with the Polarie and managed to pull of this 86 second exposure. You can see the limit of my lens which shows up as coma aberration. It looks like the beginning of star trailing but actually the camera is fixed on the stars. This is what makes the Rokinon lens so great for astrophotographers because they do not show coma aberration.

Of course, a side effect of a star tracker (like the Polarie) is that the landscape will blur because it tracks the stars. That's what happened to the left side of the tree. I could have avoided this by taking multiple exposures. But this is the best tradeoff I could render at the moment.

But the milky way is sharp. I'm a believer - in the Polarie.

Intensely Opposites - HMM

This photo is a metaphor, especially, in light of all of the turmoil around the world and what we are experiencing here in the USA. We need to realize that we have a little of each other in all of us. I'll leave it at that and let the viewer surmise the message. Thanks for viewing.

What if an alien visited your city or town? What would he see?

Here is Montreal through the eyes of an alien (me). Every year I try to visit Montreal, arguable my most favorite city on the North American continent. This is a classy city that blends an Euro culture with North American life - at least that's my take. ;-)

With well over 15,000 shots (I lost count) of time-lapse stills and video, I obviously couldn't fit all of my scenes into a 3 minute video. So I tried to do my best with the clips that fit this story.

Places:

1. Plateau (@ 5:00AM from Mount Royal freezing my @$$ off)

This pano took some work to finish. Because it's made from 21 shoots, I couldn't process all the 21 layers in one file - the file was too big. So I had to break up the shot into panels - four of them. And then merge them into the final photo to finish the processing.

I bought this 3 yard piece of kente cloth from the Kumasi Market in Ghana back in the late 90s. Forgot I had it until I went to go searching for a subject for this week's MM theme.

Some light history about kente cloth:

Kente cloth has its origin in the Ashanti kingdom, and was adopted by people in Ivory Coast and many other West African countries. It is an Akan royal and sacred cloth worn only in times of extreme importance and was the cloth of kings. Over time, the use of kente became more widespread. However, its importance has remained and it is held in high esteem with Akans. - Wikipedia
