With an ex-Conrail GP15-1 and an SW1500 for power, Cleveland Cliffs hands an empty coal train over to Lakefront Yard for interchange with CSX. The bridge at Hick can be seen in the background.
Roughly 24 hours after the 21G derailment, Altoona is a log-jam of traffic. From left to right, 294, 20Q, 21G (rear), 21G (front), 11N (pickup left by 34A).
A tightly cropped photo - so take my word for it - in the main classification yard at Reading PA, the former RDG base of operations, taken on 25 June 1989, a Conrail yard crew uses
SW-1500 No. 9522 to kick cars.
Always fun to see these lilies emerge in the yard here in New Orleans. Here and gone all to fast . . . like many things.
CN L521 arrives the Middle Yard at East Joliet, the former nerve center of the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern, behind a grimy EJ&E SD38-2 and a repainted IC GP40R.
East Joliet was made up of three classification yards: the North, Middle, and South Yards. Historically, the South Yard (foreground) classified eastbound traffic, the North Yard (background) classified westbound traffic, and the Middle Yard was a receiving yard. A fourth yard, the repair yard, was located adjacent to the locomotive shop, now the site of a CN intermodal facility.
L500 shoves its way into Durand Yard with 3 cars to set off for the Huron & Eastern and Great Lakes Central. GTW #6420 was, and still is, the last GP40-2 left on CN in Burdakin Blue.

The shed will soon depart with the 6B86 08.50 service to Cardiff Docks with empty steel wagons that will be loaded with imported steel slabs for processing at Port Talbot.
66021 is at the west end of the yard with a trainload of imported steel coils.
On the stabling point are 66080, 66651 and 66192.
50003 alongside an ED and a variety of Southern Region units in Clapham Yard. Best guess is sometime early 1990.
Soo yard wasn't really the spot to find a bunch of power tied up over the SOO years. I don't recall ever seeing more than 7 units there at once. Here's the resident switch/transfer power in the form of Geep 2405 and resting behind it is 706 witch will be trailing 717 on the evening westbound freight to Gladstone. Not much of a shot for 30 Thursday. May 7, 1987. This location would be totally unrecognizable today.
UP #2292, one of the few three-window SD60Ms still active on the UP roster, works Belt Yard located behind the ex-Milwaukee Road shops in Saint Paul which are now adorned with CPKC logos.
Shoving by the Kaukauna materials yard on the main from the Industrial Park in town, L523 has a little work yet to do at the Thilmany Pulp and Paper Mill.

It's just past 8pm on another hot Georgia evening as Norfolk Southern local job G89 pulls from Whitaker Yard in Austell, GA behind a pair of GP60's.
3Q51 Aberdeen Clayhills to Inverness Milburn Yard. Class 37 in BR blue with yellow ends and small BR logo livery heads into the yard from the HML with the Network Rail UTU Test Train consist. Seen here in a light snow shower.
The Fayetteville Local goes about its morning getting its train ready in the Springdale Yard. This would be a productive chase with a very nice pair of Alcos to work with.
Iowa Interstate SD38-2's 150 and 153 pass the former Rock Island depot site in downtown Davenport, IA with the daily transfer to the CPKC.
