This year's hot toy is the curvy/plus-size Barbie. It is available at all the best toy stores like Toys-R-Us, KB Toys, Zany Brainy and FAO Schwarz.

Its called the Y2K Mini Dress. Don't know why. It included the purse, choker and some small butterfly hair clips (not shown). It looked very cute in the store with the feather trim.

I screwed up big time with this costume. I bought a size too small and I couldn't return it as it was on clearance. I had to keep pulling it down as it barely reached the bottom of my hips. Plus the trim started becoming detached.

This is the dress i was trying to recreate in AI a while back. It's found at flic.kr/p/2qsPZqh

Every so often, a brand-new Y2K-inspired fashion fad appears, and this time it’s cargo trousers. With their patch-covered pockets and utilitarian design, cargo trousers are undoubtedly an unusual addition to the wardrobe.

Cargo pants, Australia are an underappreciated wardrobe essential and a terrific way to give your outfits a more laid-back feel.

Backstory: This is a newsletter that Michael Morrow (See Hawaiian Album) and I created in the waning months of 1999. For those of you who lived through that time you'll remember the low-level paranoia about computers malfunctioning when the clock chimed midnight. A neighbor of Michael's took the fears a bit too seriously and Michael felt it was his duty to make fun of the poor sod, so we created this five page newsletter, posting them in the neighborhood on New Year's Eve. Nothing came of it, at both the macro and micro ends, but we had great fun making it.

On Christmas break in 1999 I took a bunch of photos walking around DC in tourist mode. I'm probably not going to post most of them, but the Y2K sign makes this one irresistible.

This building is quite a period piece at this point -- brutalism at its most brutal. Hubert H Humphrey died at an inopportune time in architectural history -- he got this building and the (now demolished) Metrodome in Minneapolis named after him. I just learned now from the Wikipedia that it's actually quite an engineering accomplishment because the I-395 tunnel and a "major sewer line" run underneath.

My personal Y2K anecdote -- one summer, maybe 1998 (that would be right after graduating from high school), I worked as an intern in the IT department of the company where my mom worked. My task was to meet with teams in the company who had small-scale custom applications (like database applications) and test whether those applications would be Y2K compatible. I remember teaching myself Paradox for DOS, among other things. In retrospect, I can't believe they entrusted this to a high school intern. They must have thought it wasn't really all that important.

One of the few pieces I did in 2000. Freestyle. Stock tip. I was asked to be apart of a wall with a bunch of Twin Cities Graff writers like, Logik, Ewok, Yen 34, Peyton, Erni and many others. I had a bunch of old Rusto and Painters Touch colors left over that I really didn't use that much. Like scrap cans, etc........ So, I just threw them in a bag and headed to the wall. I knocked my piece out and bounced at dusk. I guess this wall is still up and looks damn near the same maybe just a little faded but has held up good over the years with weathering. Probably due in part to a really good solid buff job prior to the painting of the wall. A lesson to any young writers out there. If you want your shit to last, prepare the wall with a good solid base coat and use good , top quality paint. The results are worth it over time.

Back in 1999 I thought it prudent to set aside a bit of food. Not because I thought the world was going to end, but in case pre-millennial tension got out of hand and people who did think the world was going to end made a rush on the supermarkets, driving up prices and causing some short-term shortages.

Needless to say nothing of the sort happened, and I forgot about my Y2K stash until mid 2006 when I went to move the filing cabinet I'd hidden it in, at which point I remembered it and gazed upon the contents in fascinated horror.

So here it it. Swelled cans, crumbling pasta, and out of code rice that looked perfectly edible.

After taking photos I sealed it all in a cardboard box, drew biohazard symbols on it, and threw it into a skip :)

The moment 1999 became 2000.

The "Y2K" Scare was 25 Years Ago Already

As the year 2000 approached, there were world-wide fears that a simple computer problem was going to be the end of the world. In countless computer systems and data files, the year part of a date was stored using only two digits - eg 85 instead of 1985 - with the "19" part taken for granted. So when the new year 2000 arrived, would computers think it was only 1900? Well, most of the world got prepared for this in time, computers were ready for it, and (at least here in Maine at my house) when the new year 2000 arrived, nothing happened! And yet, the hype had been so big, so real, it was almost a let-down when nothing happened. And of course a huge relief. My computer didn't even blink.

The picture shows my Y2K snow-globe that's now over 25 years old. It's yellowed and become kinda murky. And a fun reminder that indeed, Y2K came and went without a hitch.

Some camera porn: Nikon's modern (Y2K) limited edition reproduction of a 1958 classic. Although the Nikon S3 2000 came w/a reproduction of the 50/1.4 Nikkor-S Olympic, it is pictured here w/a real 1950's lens attached, a 3.5cm/1.8 W-Nikkor (c.1956-58). Best of all, it works like the original. Pretty as they are, none of my cameras are "shelf queens" & you can just click on the camera's or lens's tag to the right to see photos I've taken with them.

You can read Nikon's official story of the S3 2000 Millennium project here. Only about 8000 cameras and lenses were made, and an additional 2000 in black chrome finish were made in 2002. On his Cameraquest pages, Stephen Gandy describes the S3 2000 in this article. He has an excellent overview of all the Nikon rangefinder cameras here.

If the shape reminds you of the Zeiss Ikon Contax cameras like the Contax II, that's not accidental, as Nippon Kogaku "borrowed" much of the Contax form factor after the war (Zeiss Ikon --> Nikon). The lens mounts are also almost identical, but just different enough that lenses 50mm & longer are noticeably out of focus if switched.

The retail price of the original Nikon S3 in 1958 was $430. The 3.5cm/1.8 W-Nikkor pictured above cost $179.50 in 1956. Taking CPI inflation into account, that's $3516.83 & $1559.32 in 2014 dollars. Good gear has always been pricey.

From the first era of agriculture until now, human beings have continually intervened in the development of the natural world through all kinds of technologies. We intend to build a mechanical instrument to highlight the overly disruptive effects of technology on the natural world.

When an erratically-behaving elevator claims the life of a young woman, unemployed recent college graduate Alex Eggleston takes to a primitive 1990s message-board to find answers about the death of this stranger. His quest for answers leads to more questions as his research points him to a mysterious van the internet has dubbed the “Death Cab.” This vehicular oddity roams the game’s city and countryside. Who is driving it? And despite mysterious happenings surrounding the vehicle, why does no one seem recognize its threat?

Y2K is a 3D, turn-based, JRPG-style role-playing adventure. On Alex Eggleston’s journey, he reunites with childhood friends, encounters a girl who can traverse the Soul Space to reside in new realities, and a multidimensional Android who sets the events of the game in motion. The game contains action and platforming elements, as well as meticulously designed story-based dungeons. In addition to these story-based dungeons, Y2K will feature randomly generated dungeons called “The Mind Dungeon“ that contain puzzles, story elements, and opportunities for the characters to level up beyond the standard leveling experience that is expected from battle.
