My second desert themed design this time with twice as main pieces! 😁
Rather than making the pieces thicker for 3D effect I added little anchor pegs to align the layers which gave me extra space for more pieces. This has dramatically increased the difficulty of the puzzle! 😅
I designed it on my iPad and then cut using my Xtool M1 laser cutter. Plus lots of painting, sanding and gluing.

This project has taken some time to get to this state. The initial plan was to make a clock from a mesquite cookie. During the preparation of that cookie, I made the mistake of trying to flatten the cookie in the planer, not an advisable process for end-grain. The cookie was broken into multiple pieces and I was left with a bunch of mesquite wedges. I decided to stabilize the pieces in Cactus Juice and cast them with resin and this was the resulting clock. the following pictures show the development of this project that took from roughly October 2022 through April 2023.
The resin is Alumilite Clear Slow tinted with P-town Subbie Mint Green mica powder.
The clock face was engraved using the xTool D1 Pro 20 watt laser and the engravings were filled with resin tinted with Wine Country Black Pearl mica powder with some Wine Country Silver Holographic Mica for sparkle. The dots were drilled out prior to filling with resin since some of those dots were located on resin that did not engrave well with the laser.

If you're like me and use a laser cutter frequently, you probably have a number of accessories that you need to keep organized and within easy reach. That's why I decided to create an accessories organizer using my xTool D1 Pro laser and 1/4" birch plywood. In this post, I'll take you through the process I used to create the organizer and how it has helped me keep my workspace tidy and efficient.
Step 1: Create a cardboard prototype
Before cutting any wood, I created a prototype out of cardboard to test the design and make sure that all of the accessories fit properly. This step was crucial in identifying any design flaws or measurement errors before cutting into the more expensive plywood. The cardboard prototype also allowed me to visualize the final product and make adjustments as needed.
Step 2: Design the organizer
Once I had a successful cardboard prototype, I moved onto creating the design using my OpenSCAD box making script. I made sure to measure each accessory precisely and left enough space for them to fit comfortably in their designated slots. I also added a few additional slots for other accessories I might need in the future.
Step 3: Cut the plywood
With the design complete, I was ready to cut the plywood using my xTool D1 Pro laser. I used a 1/4" birch plywood sheet and made sure to adjust the laser settings accordingly. After a few minutes of cutting, I had a fully-formed organizer that looked exactly like the design.
Step 4: Test and refine
After cutting the plywood, I tested the organizer with all of my accessories to make sure everything fit properly. I made a few minor adjustments to some of the slots to ensure a snug fit, but otherwise the organizer worked perfectly.
Step 5: Enjoy a tidy workspace
Now that I have the laser accessories organizer in place, my workspace is much more organized and efficient. I no longer have to dig through a messy drawer to find the accessory I need, and everything is easily accessible in one place. Plus, the natural wood finish looks great and adds a touch of warmth to my workspace.
In conclusion, creating a laser accessories organizer using a laser cutter and 1/4" birch plywood was a fun and rewarding project that has improved my workspace in a big way. If you have a laser cutter and need a way to keep your accessories organized, I highly recommend giving this project a try.
