Large, long-legged bird shaped much like a heron. Gray body, sometimes with intense rusty staining. Adults have red crown. Often in large flocks at migration and wintering concentration points. Favors marshes and agricultural fields where they eat primarily grains. In flight, neck is outstretched, unlike herons with tucked necks. Snappy wingbeats. Listen for far-carrying bugling call. While we were walking along the dike at Tiny Marsh, we heard the distinctive bugling of cranes. Looking up, we were thrilled to see a flock of nearly forty birds arriving at the marsh. Of course, they had to land on the wrong side of the dike, in the glaring sun, but I couldn't resist photographing these beautiful birds. Not the greatest shot, with such harsh light, but a great souvenir of this trip.

W9 and I hike into the canyon from Sunset Blvd. A trickle of water runs here year round, even during the drought. Sycamore trees shade the narrow path.
It takes a beat to settle in and watch for movement through the layers of green and listen carefully. We are hearing the cutest bird call. A grosbeak is feeding his big handsome babies.

Additional details on my blog.
Rare moment to see, 15 years ago I thought that shot can be repeated like maybug flight photos.
At that time, infestated Polistes wasps were not so common in Central Europe but I was well directed by my friend, Prague entomologist Jakub Straka, to find them. Today, due to warming, they can be found easily. I can see these wasps every year and also had found some male parasite adults in our kids inflatable swiming pool. Male parasites are very agile fliers but they survive only few hours after emergence, they need to find female(s) very quickly. Anyway, after a few tens of minutes of searching they drop to the ground and die of exhaustion due to limited energy supplies.
But the emergence of male(s) is so quick process that I do not know anybody who documented this in nature. In captivity, both wasps and parasites can be confused and emergence often occurs around midnight like in this case (01:24 AM).
My rechargeable AA batteries were almost discharged, I took only 2 shots.

When I finally managed to return to flickr I saw some wonderful images of this sim, so thank you to Annie Klavinham, Ziki Questi and others for sharing your images and the location.
I spent a long time exploring, and each step there was something new - the way the light changed, a detail, an angle - to delight the eye.
This is somewhere that will repay repeated visits.

So after having Grifters head done for a while I decided to make him a semi-complete figure. It's not the most detailed figure, but I like it. Xenos was pretty easy when it came to the figure, but the cannon was the hardest part.

cayana / cayanensis / cayanus Cayenne or French Guiana. In early ornithology “Cayenne” was often used of species of uncertain provenance presumed to be from Amazonia.
Grey currawong on Callum Brae. This bird has a very distinctive call, even though its appearance is similar to the pied currawong. Australia, November, 2014.

Twite is a scarce bird in Britain that is localised on both its breeding and wintering grounds. It is under-represented on Flickr, probably because it is a dull, little brown job so never attracts the same attention as colourful birds like Kingfisher. It is also tiny, and often feeds on the ground so not easy to get a clear photograph. Twite breed on moorland edges in Scotland and the north of England and move to saltmarshes in winter. In summer they often feed on weedy fields on moorland edge farms. They also breed in Norway but just small numbers breed elsewhere in Europe (eg Wales, Ireland, Sweden). The main centre of population is in the mountains of southern central Asia from eastern Turkey across to China, though if studied I suspect these may be classified as a different species. The distinguishing features of Twite are that curry-coloured face and some white in the wings and tail. In winter the dull grey beak turns bright yellow which gave rise to its scientific name flavirostris (yellow-nosed). Here's a winter bird with a bright yellow bill: www.flickr.com/photos/timmelling/23286278181/in/photolist They also have a characteristic nasal buzzing call which to my ears sounds like no other bird and apparently gave rise to the name Twite: www.xeno-canto.org/340929 Males differ from females in having a pink rump that is usually covered by the wings on a perched bird, but if you look at the base of the tail on this bird you can see a couple of pink feathers, showing he's a male. I took this photograph in spring as I was walking up the Quiraing on the Isle of Skye.
