Loch of the Lowes
Loch of the Lowes Visitor Centre and Wildlife Reserve covers 98 hectares near Dunkeld. From early April to late August, the star attraction is a pair of breeding ospreys, which nest just 150 metres from our observation hide.

How to get there
Directions
The reserve is situated 16 miles north of Perth and 2 miles north east of Dunkeld, just off the A923 Dunkeld to Blairgowrie road (signposted from the A9). The car park is situated at the roadside 120m from the visitor centre, and is linked by a wheelchair friendly path.
Visitors can also walk from Dunkeld using the Fungarth Path, which is about 2 miles in length.
Getting onto the reserve
Follow the access track to the disabled car park and visitor centre.
Access restrictions
Only guide dogs are permitted in the visitor centre and hides.
No fishing is permitted at Loch of the Lowes at any time of year to protect its wildlife and rare underwater flora.

Since April, I have had a wonderful time working with the team and I am sure to miss it for a very long time (possibly forever?). I moved up to Scotland from the West Midlands, following graduating with a degree in Zoology last year. Hi Folks,
I just published a new imaging project on my website.
Messier 101 - The Pinwheel Galaxy with the recently discovered supernova - SN2023ixf!
This target is located 21 Million light-years away in the constellation of Ursa Major.
This was about a 3-hour exposure in LRGB using my widefield Askar FRA400 Platform.
Everybody and their brother seems out there shooting images of this galaxy with its supernova.
And who's to blame them? Supernovae are amazing events. At the end of its life, a star explodes, releasing as much energy in one second as our Sun will emit in its entire lifetime!
This does not happen every day, and to have one in a galaxy as beautiful as the Pinwheel is worth shooting.
But with so many images of this out there - why should I shoot it tool. Do I think I can do better than everyone else? Hardly!
This is such a cool event that I did want to have one captured in my portfolio.
But during my last imaging session, my widefield Askar FRA400 Platform was the only scope that was untasked. During galaxy season, there are relatively few large targets to shoot. So I pointed it at M101 and decided to go for it!
My expectations were very low, though:
- A widefield scope shooting a galaxy - that will be a problem!
- I was only able to get 3 hours of integration - my last shot of M101 had 11 hours - so that's going to be a problem
- I am shooting with some thin smoke from the Alberta Wildfires in the air - that IS a problem.
So why shoot it at all?
- Supernovae are one the coolest events in our night sky - I wanted to capture an image of that - even a poor one!
- I saw this as an opportunity to dive into what supernovae were all about and describe that in my web write-up
- I have the twisted part of my personality that likes the challenge of getting a better image out of compromised data
I drizzle processed, then cropped like mad, and took advantage of BlurXTerminator and NoiseXTerninaor to help improve a dicey image.
The final result is not wonderful, but it is not horrible either!

This is another image from telescope live: the Crescent Nebula. It was a tough dataset to stack, as there were a bunch of dead pixel lines from the CCD. However, once the dataset was stacked, it was quite fun to process. The Oiii data was extremally strong, and it was really interesting to see the extent of the wispiness around the nebula. Iâve been experimenting with a new ânaturalâ pallete made from SHO emissions, and I think it turned out pretty accurate!
NGC 6888, also known as the Crescent Nebula, is a cosmic bubble about 25 light-years across, blown by winds from its central, bright, massive star. It combines a composite color image with narrow band data that isolates light from hydrogen and oxygen atoms in the wind-blown nebula. The oxygen atoms produce the blue-green hue that seems to enshroud the detailed folds and filaments. NGC 6888âs central star is classified as a Wolf-Rayet star (WR 136). The star is shedding its outer envelope in a strong stellar wind, ejecting the equivalent of the Sunâs mass every 10,000 years. The nebulaâs complex structures are likely the result of this strong wind interacting with material ejected in an earlier phase. Burning fuel at a prodigious rate and near the end of its stellar life this star should ultimately go out with a bang in a spectacular supernova explosion. Found in the nebula rich constellation Cygnus, NGC 6888 is about 5,000 light-years away.

The graceful, winding arms of the majestic whirlpool galaxy appear like a grand spiral staircase sweeping through space. They are actually long lanes of stars and gas laced with dust.
This sharpest-ever image of the Whirlpool Galaxy illustrates a spiral galaxyâs grand design, from its curving spiral arms, where young stars reside, to its yellowish central core, a home of older stars. The bright pink regions display large bursts of H-alpha, where new stars are formed.

Main story
There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.
One, to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.
The other, to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days, staring at the shine
quietly.
Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. Itâs a rebirth.
I face myself to change tomorrow, a vague day into something certain.
That is the meaning of a rebirth.
I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.
After she left, I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After
she left, how many times did I depend too much on her, doubt her, envy her and keep on telling lies
until I realized it is love?
I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the
daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.
I had been thinking about such a thing.
However, I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. Thatâs why she tried to see
something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me, a guy filled with ambiguous, unstable
tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.
Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.
