Poet
from La Regina Avrillouse
Take ye the honey cup
The honied song raise up,
Drink of the spring's allure,
April and dew and rain;
Brown of the earth sing sure,
Cheeks and lips and hair
And soft breath that kisseth where
Thy lips have come not yet to drink.

"Ezra Weston Loomis Pound (30 October 1885 – 1 November 1972) was an American expatriate poet and critic, and a major figure in the early modernist movement in poetry. He became known for his role in developing Imagism, which, in reaction to the Victorian and Georgian poets, favored tight language, unadorned imagery, and a strong correspondence between the verbal and musical qualities of the verse and the mood it expressed. His best-known works include Ripostes (1912), Hugh Selwyn Mauberley (1920), and his unfinished 120-section epic, The Cantos, which consumed his middle and late career, and was published between 1917 and 1969.
Working in London in the early 20th century as foreign editor of several American literary magazines, Pound helped to discover and shape the work of contemporaries such as T. S. Eliot, James Joyce, Robert Frost, and Ernest Hemingway. It was Pound who was responsible for the publication in 1915 of Eliot's "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock", and for the serialization from 1918 of Joyce's Ulysses. Hemingway wrote in 1925: "He defends [his friends] when they are attacked, he gets them into magazines and out of jail. He loans them money. ... He writes articles about them. He introduces them to wealthy women. He gets publishers to take their books. He sits up all night with them when they claim to be dying ... he advances them hospital expenses and dissuades them from suicide."
Outraged by the loss of life during the First World War, he lost faith in England, blaming usury and international capitalism for the war. He moved to Italy in 1924 where throughout the 1930s and 1940s, to his friends' dismay, he embraced Benito Mussolini's fascism, expressed support for Adolf Hitler, and wrote for publications owned by the British fascist Oswald Mosley. The Italian government paid him during the Second World War to make hundreds of radio broadcasts criticizing the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and in particular Jews, broadcasts that were monitored by the U.S. government, as a result of which he was arrested for treason by American forces in Italy in 1945. He spent months in detention in a U.S. military camp in Pisa, including 25 days in a six-by-six-foot outdoor steel cage that he said triggered a mental breakdown: "when the raft broke and the waters went over me." Deemed unfit to stand trial, a decision disputed for decades after his death, he was incarcerated in St. Elizabeths psychiatric hospital in Washington, D.C., for over 12 years.
While in custody in Italy he had begun work on sections of The Cantos that became known as The Pisan Cantos (1948), for which he was awarded the Bollingen Prize in 1949 by the Library of Congress. The honor triggered enormous controversy, mostly because of his antisemitism, and in part because it raised literary questions about whether a supposedly mad poet who held such contentious views could produce work of any value. He was released from St. Elizabeths in 1958, thanks to a protracted campaign by his fellow writers, and returned to live in Italy until his death. His political views ensure that his work remains controversial; in 1933 Time magazine called him "a cat that walks by himself, tenaciously unhousebroken and very unsafe for children." Hemingway nevertheless wrote, "The best of Pound's writing—and it is in the Cantos—will last as long as there is any literature.""

A while back, I decided to take the dive and try to learn a programming language. I wasn't sure which one would be best for someone who was something of a beginner, and with a rather sketchy idea of what I hoped to be able to do with it. I chose Java because I found some good resources, the Stanford CS106a intro to computer science class, with all video lectures on youtube, free eclipse coding editor/compiler, class handouts, example programs, solutions to all exercises, textbooks in pdf format. And a very well-written textbook too, "The Art and Science of Java" by Eric S. Roberts.
After a few chapters , I decided that I could forget the lectures, and just study from the book. The programming exercises at the end of each chapter are actually more demanding than the assignments actually given in the class anyway, and as entertaining as the professor is, his humorous delivery doesn't always help the relevant programming concepts come through clearly.
But I have had a very eventful year, and mostly because of pressures in my life I've stalled about halfway through the book.
In my reading about learning to program I began to see more advice to novices learning to program and trying to choose a language. And for many reasons I've come to think that python might be better as an introductory language. Some of these reasons are : 1. it is very popular today, and tutorials are offered on it through many educational websites such as Khanacademy and codeacademy. 2. its syntax is simpler, it requires less typing and fewer special concepts to understand before you can begin. Such as, in Java all variables must have their type declared when they are first used, additionally variables, classes, methods and functions all need an explicit privacy setting applied when they are created, this is hard to understand for someone who is already straining to understand what classes, methods, functions and such mean in the first place. 3. Java is a compiled language, and commands from it cannot be tried interactively in isolation at a command prompt. This means that there is always a delay between what you write and the result it produces. It also means that it can be hard to test parts of a program in isolation to see what works and what doesn't. This is kind of a big deal for me, because when I first used a computer, as a child of about 8, in the mid-1980s, I was familiar with the command prompt, and the fact that I could type expressions and get results as soon as they were entered, so programming could be learned by playing. Shortly after the Commodore was stolen from my dad's place in the late 80s, I ceased coming into contact with any computers, which had an interpreter-based operating system. The perception was that you would buy a computer to run programs instead of to write them. That you would buy programs to run on your computer, rather than build your own programs yourself. This view was enforced by computers coming with a DOS operating system, which would let you load programs, copy data, examine directories, but which didn't directly facilitate you writing programs of your own. When, in the early 90s, Windows became popular, my attention shifted from writing programs, to the things that could be done with programs. Playing games, making art, downloading documents and communicating with people. In the windows era, you had much greater potential to use your computer to write articles, do complex calculations with little setup time, play fast, beautiful, immersive games, play music or create stunning graphics. But you had to already have the programs someone else had written, in order to do these things. You used the operating system of the computer to open them, and to switch between them conveniently, but not to create. Not to make the machine do what you wanted. In windows, you can have your math expressions evaluated in the calculator, or in a spreadsheet, but you are shielded from touching the power of computing itself.
Moving from Java to Python is easier than I expected. The difference is much less than between BASIC and Java. Functions and function calls make sense, instructions to import make sense, variables being local to a function make sense. There are similar data types, many keywords are the same between the languages, (and there aren't that many keywords, about 30. more or less, in each language, and most of them are probably common to both, and probably also common to several other computer languages)
In the picture, the program on the left is notepad++ with a python program written in it. In the Stanford Eclipse editor on the right we see hilighted, the same program written in Java. This was an early Java programming exercise from the textbook, "The Art and Science of Java" and I just translated it, into equivalent Python code.
The Python is more compact, and largely because it relies on the indentation which is a strongly suggested style in Java, to do the same job as the opening and closing curly braces which, in Java are mandatory.
Also noticeable are the shorter and simpler lines for method definitions and for loops. and in Java, the boolean test conditions are enclosed within parentheses that Python simply does without. The for loop in Python also has several other goodies, like an index variable, not declared or explicitly initialized, the powerful Python keyword, "in" and the very useful function or method, range()
In spite of my interest in Python, I am not eager to give-up on Java yet. But I can foresee Python as my default language for quick computer experimentation.

Best Way to (Cheaply) Advertise Auspacific Media Group?
"...Hello folks, just wondering if anyone had any ideas over cheap but effective ways to advertise Auspacific Media Group; the blog and the planned website. ..."
My marketing plan
Hey Rich I really hate marketing. It sucks. It sucks because marketing is about convincing others to need something they don't. There are many ways to market, here's mine. It revolves around making something good, telling the truth and informally telling an audience. [0]
Make something good
That's your department not mine. But I will say try to make a quality product or service where deficiencies don't require traditional marketing.
Communicate
The communicating part involves using the following services.
Images (what I see): flickr account for up to 200 images
Blog (what I write, articles): wordpress account for blog, independent of the main site.
Contact (what I say): twitter/identica account for immediate contact
Collate (how I discuss/collate): Friendfeed account, create a group to let others contribute, discuss
Feedback (how I discuss/feedback): Create Facebook identity, solicit feedback and discussion groups.
Each of these sites allow you to do different things. One for showing, one for immediate talk, one for discussion and another for longer articles. The glue to hold them together is a name, handle or title that you use for *all* accounts. This is usually a persons nickname, handle or company name. I tend to choose handles (until I register a business name) that are little used. Why? So when I start adding things I can measure the Google search. For example "bootload", a name I chose as a bit of a joke and experiment had very few Google returns aside from bootloader software. Another example is "seldomlogical", a name I use and will increasingly be using in the near future. No meaningful references could be found prior. Post use I dominate the ranking.
Flickr
I like taking photos but I also take photos so I have a copyright free way of using images. My images. The images I post draw people. I take photos of lots of different things.
Blog
For posting longer, more permanent essays or articles of interest.
Contact
I use twitter to quickly post URLs of flickr images or blog posts. Also use it to get feedback, fast.
Friendfeed
Use this to collect all my services via RSS and then re-post this *combined* rss feed to Facebook. This means everything I create on the open web moves towards Facebook for this particular audience to read.
A destination point for most users and your other bits of open web. A place you can discuss. But beware Facebook is a siphon for your data. You can't get access (machine data). Be warned but you did say for free right?
Show, dont tell
But this isn't about trying to game Google. You have to make something that people really want. Show not tell. Joel Spolsky made a good observation along with Jason Calacanis about trying to game Google with software companies.[2] There are a couple of good companies or organisations that dominate the number one position on Google. There are quite a few more that are probably worthy by contribution being on the first page and thousands upon thousands trying to get onto the first page of Google ranking but who aren't that good.
Tell the truth, Be good
So from my point of view, marketing or advertising is really about making something compelling and telling the truth. [1] You tell the truth for example by making the best software and then telling people "this is the best software" you can get in this part of a market. You tell the truth because it's the easiest path to take without lying. Telling the truth is *stateless*. Rather than pay some "expert" who will tell you they know the success to gaming Google when Google don't know what will be returned first because the ranking is a (constantly tweaked) algorythm. [2]
Recap
If I was to advise three things for you to do. This is what I'd say:
a) Make something compelling for users, audience
b) Combine your *free* services by a common name
c) Tell the truth and be good.

“Faith healer” Reverend B.E. Rediger came to Fort Wayne in 1926. He struggled to get his message of faith out to the people, so he ventured into self-publishing his own magazine with some success. It wasn’t until he used his oratory prowess over WOWO radio that his vision of a full church came to be realized. His little church, The Fort Wayne Gospel Tabernacle (now the Craftsman Club pictured), at 2329 Winter Street went from mostly empty on Sunday following his first broadcast to overflowing the next.
It was quickly apparent that a new and bigger church was needed. With the Great Depression in its early years, Rediger moved forward cautiously to build The Fort Wayne Gospel Temple at the NE corner of Rudisill Boulevard and S. Calhoun Street. Large enough to sit 3,000 people (for reference, the Embassy Theatre sits 2,471), the Temple was the second largest church of its kind in the world. At its dedication, nearly 10,000 people were in attendance. A year later when the 38 year-old Rediger died from complications of Appendicitis, 18,000 paid their respects. The Gospel Temple lived on to about 1990. The building has since been demolished, but its image is forever engraved on the reverend's tombstone.

A more in depth story of the Gospel Temple follows below:
“The Temple That Radio Built”
In the spring of 1926, a young man brought his wife and children to Fort Wayne, Indiana to fulfill a vision he said was given to him by God. Little did he know that in a few short years, he would plant the seed for one of the largest church ministries of its kind in the country.
Reverend Benjamin E. (B.E) Rediger began preaching in his Grandfather's country church in Livingston County, Illinois and moved on to small farming communities preaching in "tents and neglected churches." Following his visions, he developed a reputation as a great speaker and faith healer of cancers "and scores of others [ailments] too numerous to mention" which brought him to Fort Wayne for visits and then as a place of residence.
In the Summit City, the Reverend began his mission testifying on street corners and handing out New Testaments, but found the citizens less than eager to share in his outward faith. He made many attempts to get the newspapers to write articles on the work being done, but was rejected at every turn. By June the following year, Rediger published his own newsletter--a free four page black & white paper called 'The End Times' to reach out to those around the country. Despite criticism of such a bleak title, it remained and grew to a twenty page two-colored cover magazine with a subscription fee.
After a year of conducting revival meetings in area farms, homes and a rented hall in downtown, Reverend Rediger decided the time was right for a building of permanence. He purchased 2329 Winter Street for $3,500. The seed was planted and the church named "Fort Wayne Gospel Tabernacle" was born.
Going forward with enthusiasm, the little church struggled to fill seats "but steadily the work was spreading out...little by little, step by step." Relying on his oratory prowess, Rediger met with WOWO, one of two radio stations in Fort Wayne at the time, to spread the Gospel. He was turned away once, but returned again. Despite the little money he had coming in, he signed a contract for six Sundays at 5-6pm for the handsome sum of $37.50 per hour ($508.95 in 2014 adjusted dollars). He became one of the pioneering radio evangelists when he opened his first broadcast with "Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." That evening, the service saw a larger than usual turnout. After the second broadcast, the little church was filled to capacity and people had to stand outside. Turning away several hundred people over the course of the broadcasts made it quite clear that the little church on Winter Street was inadequate.
The Reverend opened an account at the Lincoln National Bank and Trust Company and his growing church deposited several thousand dollars for the future building. A wooded lot surrounded by houses on the northeast corner of Rudisill Boulevard and Calhoun Street became available. In a quickly growing area of town, the undeveloped property was seen as a sign and Rediger bought the property. The times were a strain as the economy tumbled from the beginnings of the Great Depression. Money was slow coming in and the popular radio programs were draining, so the new church was built in stages. Worried that the crowds would shrink seeing only a “bleak and bare” foundation for an entire winter, the decision was made to take out a loan and finish the rest of the building.
On 23 November 1930, the unfinished building was dedicated as the Fort Wayne Gospel Temple. The Temple was massive with seating for 3,000 (seating in the Embassy Theatre is 2,471). Estimates that day put the crowd at almost 10,000 people.
Rediger continued to reach out to his vast listeners and expanded his radio programs and invited well known (largely forgotten today) persons to speak. Aimee McPherson of the Angelus Temple in Los Angeles, evangelist and former baseball player, Billy Sunday; and Paul Rader of the Chicago Gospel Tabernacle were a few of the notable guests.
An unexpected illness struck Reverend Rediger the following November. Abdominal pains became excruciating despite his perseverance and prayers as a healer. After several days, he finished his Friday radio broadcast and was admitted to the hospital with Appendicitis. He waited too long, the appendix ruptured two days earlier, and he developed Peritonitis. Nothing could be done. He died 22 November 1931 at the age of 38—nearly a year after the first service in the Temple. He was survived by his wife and three daughters. 18,000 people paid their respects and he was laid to rest in Lindenwood Cemetery.
The Fort Wayne Gospel Temple did not die with Rediger, however. His wife took over as President of the corporation and it continued on to about 1990 with different preachers. The Temple was later demolished.
Trivia:
1) Many preachers took the call to lead the Temple during its life. A young Reverend Billy Graham nearly took the position, but was turned down.
2) Many notable speakers came to share their stories over the years like Charles Lindbergh in October 1941.

Tom Schandy from Norway has been interested in birds since he was a small boy. 12 years old he had his own bird-column in the local newspaper, and soon he started to illustrate his bird articles with own pictures. He studied biology at the University of Oslo and made his master on the lekking behaviour of the Great Snipe, and he financed his studies by selling pictures of birds and other creatures.
After finishing his studies he got a part-time job in WWF Norway, first as a conservation officer, later as an information officer. Rest of the time he worked as a freelance wildlife photographer and author. I 2000 he became full time author and professional wildlife photographer – and has never looked back. Now he searches the globe for nature – in order to write articles and make books. So far he has been involved in more than 20 books, mainly on natural history. Many books are local nature books, but he also made a book about Africa which has been published in both Norwegian, Swedish, English and Spanish (The magnificent Africa).
The last few years he has been concentrating on Latin-Americas wildernesses, and just now he is moving his attention to the northern wildernesses of the world, like Alaska, Canada. Spitsbergen and Russia.
The aspect of nature conservation forms a vital part of Tom Schandys photography. If his photos, books and articles on nature and wildlife can be used to promote the enjoyment of nature and inspire nature conservation and biological diversity, then much of the purpose has been achieved!

It's been so long since I've been here, I couldn't even figure out how to write a message. So I'll just tell you here....Last few months were very bad for my family; life threatening illnesses (not me, my sister) hospital stays, convalescent homes, and one and on. Things finally better. I drew a lot, mostly sitting with my sister in hospital, nursing home, etc., but didn't have much time to photocopy, write articles, or post stuff. Hopefully I'm back now! I've started commenting on a few photos, but have so much to do to catch up for at least the last month or so. I also have a lot to load, but probably won't load them all. Here's one, a mixed media I finished recently. I call it "Steampunk Meets Punk Rock, and it's an 8 x 10. Hope you like.

Mohamed Ghilan the Saudi Arabia born Canadian Muslim who writes articles relating to Islamic topics, theology, and philosophy of religion and science, has published an article on Aljareera titled ‘To Sharia or not to Sharia: The question of Islamopolitics’ in which he states “The Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life recently released their latest results from a survey of Muslims around the world on religion, politics and society. Although there is wide variability, it seems that most Muslims want Sharia (Islamic Law) to be the governing law of their countries and to play an important role in the political process. However, although the majority of Muslims agree on the general principle of applying Sharia, they do not seem to agree on what that term means. Given the diversity of understanding and sources one can be exposed to in the Islamic tradition, this disagreement should not come as a surprise. …The human element must be brought to the forefront of this conversation. The way in which Islam is being considered the driving force behind Islamopolitical movements as if it is an autonomous agent removes accountability from the people within those movements. While their desire for economic and social reform is commendable, their approach is highly questionable. ...The current struggle is between rationalist Muslims who want to bring forth the Islamic tradition in its complete spectrum and dogmatist Muslims who think classical political works written in completely different contextual realities have some divine quality or sanctity to them. More importantly, Muslims need to come to terms with the fact that progress is not going to come from political parties that exploit the population's emotional connection with Islam as a means to gain power.” Inspired by Mohamed Ghilan, Aljazeera ow.ly/lMHfv Image source Mohamed Ghilan ow.ly/lMH8Z

Got tagged by Jessica, CaptainGirl and probably some other people! :) If you see this, and you haven't been tagged; sorry! But still feel free to go do it yourself<3
Ofc I had to do Anton ;w;
1. What was your childhood like?
I grew up in the 16th century. My childhood was different than it would have been now. I was the daughter of a rich and noble governor, so I had the possability to grow up in a good home. I always liked the big pretty dresses.
2. If you could go back in time and change one thing, what would it be?
... I think that is obvious.. Or, maybe not.. I would've stopped those men who infiltrated our house and.. What happend next.. and when they made me ..this. But maybe not, I would've never met Olivia.
3. How much do you weigh?
I don't know. I actually don't care.
4. Have you ever loved and lost?
Yeah, I love Olivia. And I loved my parents. Though I can't really remember them (that's... I know, but it's... not really my faulth). I just loved them, and I've lost them.
5. What do you do for a living and why?
I don't have a job. I guess I'm going to school when the new schoolyear starts. I'm not really sure, I don't "exist" in this world, so idk how Olivia will make me go to school.
6. What kind of music do you like?
Mostly classic. I love violin and the piano. I love balletmusic. Olivia listens to it too. We also go to ballet plays because she needs to write articles about them in papers. The music just touches me, it's hard to explain. Olivia also makes me listen to other sorts of music, but I don't really know the name of that. It's just what you regurarely hear on the radio, I guess.
7. How old are you?
I'm 16. But if you count from my birthyear, 1582, than I'm 432 (so old!)
8. What's the most annoying thing in the world?
That I can't sleep for long. After 3 hours of sleeping I'm already up again. Ugh.
9. What is your favorite word?
Oh god, I sound so obsessed with her, but I would have to say 'Olivia'. It makes me happy, makes me smile. It's simple to say. Imsuchastalker.
10. Do you have any interesting hobbies?
I... read?
11. What is the most romantic thing anyone has ever done for you?
Ehmm, Olivia (again) put up candles around her house and we watched together movies and ballet plays. May sound boring to most of you guys but I really enjoyed it.
12. How do you relax at the end of a long day?
I love to talk to Olivia and how her day was. Or just sitting on my chair in my room with all my old furniture and stuff, with my old glasses on and reading one of my books. It reminds me of my life before all this.
13. Do you have any obsessions?
Olivia counts as an obsession, lol. Also old stuff, stuff that reminds me of the 16th century.
14. What is your nationality?
I lived in Flanders. So I guess my nationality was Belgian?
15. What languages do you speak?
English, Dutch, French.
16. If you could have any pet in the world, what would it be?
Oh dear, I don't know. They wouldnt life long if I'd take care of them, actually!
17. Whats the most random thing you find yourself doing everyday?
Staring at my old stuff?
18. Speed favorites, go! Book, movie, game, drink, colour?
the Perks of a Wallflower (read it thanks to Olivia), Alice in Wonderland (brilliant movie & book!), I don't really play games D: , I don't drink/eat besides blood ;_; , I like every color! But mostly soft colors.
19. My teddybear from my childhood. Take him everywhere with me. He mostly lies in my bed, or chair. When I sleep with Olivia, I take him with me but I hug with Olivia than instead of the bear.
20. Are you in a relationship?
No, why'd you think that? :P
21. What was your worst injury?
I remember in my childhood, I once fell from the chair, I fell with my head on the cornor of the table and had a cut out of the back of my head.
22. What scares you the most? Thunder.. Being alone in this world.
23. Something most people don't know about you?
I hate being this short forever!
24. Do you have any pets?
Nope.
25. What do you think of this interview?
Well I sounded like a complete Olivia-stalker. But I enjoyed it.
Advertising for free seems like an impossible thing when heard. But there are several ways by which the cost of advertisement can be conserved, with the help of some imagination and creativity.
A business wanting to advertise, can write articles related to their field of expertise that can be submitted to media and publications having interest in that particular field. The advertising article can have information about the company and dealership opportunity. Due to the rise in Internet users and websites, new websites have sprung up which offer free services. Articles can be written for these websites and they can be broadcasted for free, which will be viewed by hundreds of people everyday. source - www.gibline.com/maryspromise

This is what I wear when my life is falling apart and I need to walk a half an hour in the pouring rain and don't care what I look like. The only reason I documented it was because a) I will never get a picture of my Dragon Mountain shirt otherwise and b) I will never get a picture of my red sneakers otherwise.
Food Co-Op shift from 8:30-11pm. We talked about how everyone always writes articles about how the PS Food Co-Op is so much work and how it's "a bunch of communists" because we don't sell bottled water and you're required to bring your own bags. And now people are making t-shirts with your work status on it (active, alert or suspended). Paul and I were married 31 years ago today. On paper, we weren't a perfect match but we just knew it was right. It helped that we were friends for some time before we dated.
This photo was taken the day we met in 1980. We both worked for the US Forest Service, he as a forestry technician and I as an information receptionist. One of my jobs was to follow various crews in the field and write articles/take photos showcasing the work they did. Here I'm looking through a clinometer which is used in forestry to determine % of slope.

I went to Hastings to see my friend Geoff and amused myself taking photographs of all the neat stuff he has around his rooms.
This thing is something of an enigma -it is clearly something relating to an art exhibition in 1953-presumably in Germany. Anyone with any more information- it would be fun to know some more...

I was kindly sent the following by e-mail from Ralf Palandt in Munich
I saw your “Qui-Qua-Quu”-photo at flickr.com. I can tell you what it shows. As you already know the Haus der Kunst is an art museum in Munich (where I live). In the 1950ties the German magazine Quick (yellow press) organized parties there. Therefore the guests got a medal for decoration. In the 1950ties it showed the face of “Nick Knatterton”. Nick Knatterton was a comic figure of a comic strip, published in the magazine Quick.
I know all this because I´m a fan of Nick Knatterton and have some of this medals. I´m member of the society of comic book research (www.comicforschung.de) and write articles about Knatterton and other comic strips.
Greetings and best wishes from Munich,

The other day I had what I consider my first "real" photo shoot. A friend's boss needed some portrait shots taken for his business. He occasionally writes articles and he does talks at conventions or seminars so he needed some publicity shots for those events and publications. My friend mentioned that I take a fair photograph so he had me come in last night and take some shots.
I've done some shots at some MCW events, but those are usually one or two quick shots of the wrestlers between matches and not very involved when it comes to time spent with the subject. This time I got to really talk with my subject and feel him out for what he needed and wanted for his shots. It was a interesting experience and fun as well.
All in all, I'm really please at how they turned out. Not too bad, if I do say so myself (and I do) for my first outing as something more than just a hobbyist.
If I recall correctly, I think we took about 70 shots with different backdrops and poses. These three are my favorites of the shots.
As usual, any comments or critiques are welcome.

Ramadhan Tips
Ramadan is the month of excitement for Muslims. Ramadan is the month of revelation of Quran, the month of reading and reciting the whole Quran, the month of Tahajjud and Qiyam al-layl prayers, Sadaqah, Zakah al-Fitr and Zakah al-Mal. Ramadan is also a month of social activities among Muslims.
No one can go anywhere without preparation, and no one invites a guest without preparing to welcome him / her. Similarly, to welcome Ramadan, the month of fasting, one has to prepare. The following are some tips to help the reader prepare accordingly:
1. Start reading Quran daily after Salat al-Fajr.
2. Spend some time listening to recitations from the Quran.
3. Train yourself to go bed early so that you can wake up far Salat al-Fajr.
4. Keep yourself in a state of Wudu (Ablution) most of the time.
5. Evaluate yourself daily before going bed.
6. Thank Allah for good deeds, and repent to Him for your mistakes and sins.
7. Start giving Sadaqah daily, no matter how little. Make it a habit like eating and drinking.
8. Find time to pray extras, such as Tahajjud prayers.
9. Spend more time reading Islamic books, especially the Quran, Sirah, Hadith, and Fiqh.
10. Find time to help others with your wisdom, knowledge and other talents.
11. Try to write articles on Islam for Muslims as well as for non-Muslims.
12. Associate with Muslim scholars / ulama and other pious people so that you may learn from them.
13. Train yourself to do good, render free service to others to seek the pleasure of Allah.
1. Reduce watching TV, instead spend more time reading the Quran and other Islamic literature.
2. Avoid looking at unlawful pictures, whether magazines, department store catalogs or otherwise.
3. Avoid going to theaters; instead go to Masajid, Islamic organizations and make that a daily habit.
4. Avoid eating too much. Eat only when you are hungry and try not to fill your stomach completely.
5. If you drink Coffee, Tea or Soda, be sure to reduce consumption.
6. If you smoke, try to reduce daily usage; otherwise Ramadan will be very difficult for you to observe.
7. If you like to listen to music, whether the style of western societies or even those from Muslim countries, reduce, even eliminate the time you spent on them; replace them with reciting and listening to recitation from the Quran.
8. If you enjoy playing cards and board games try your best to avoid them as much as possible and fill your time with something useful.
9. If you enjoy going with friends to picnics and other social gatherings, try to reduce it before Ramadan; otherwise fasting the month of Ramadan will be more difficult.
10. If you have friends who do not practice the teaching of Islam, try to avoid socializing with them.
11. If you travel a lot on business, try to do more local business, so you can be more closer to your family and community.
12. If you are used to staying up till midnight, try to go to bed earlier, so that you will be able to wake up early for Salat al-Fajr and Tahajjud prayers as well.
To prepare ourselves before the month of Ramadan arrives is far better than waiting till it comes. To prepare ourselves for anything in life is a sign of wisdom and maturity. No one is assured of living one day more; tomorrow may not come. So hurry and benefit from blessings and rewards from Allah.
Remember: "Time is not money or gold; it is life itself and is limited. You must begin to appreciate every moment of your life and always strive to make the best use of it." - Khurram Murad.
# Make a resolve to win the maximum favor of Allah by performing extra Voluntary prayers (Nawaafil), making frequent Dua and increased remembrance (Dhikr).
# Try to recite some Holy Quran after every Prayer. In fact if you read 3-4 pages after every Prayer you can easily finish the entire Quran in Ramadan!
# Study the Tafseer (commentary) every morning.
# Invite a person you are not very close with or your relatives to your home for Iftaar, at least once a week (Weekend). You will notice the blessings in your relationships!
# Bring life to your family! Everyday, try to conclude the fast with your family and spend some quality time together to understand each other better.
# Give gifts on Eid to at least 5 people: 2 to your family members, 2 to your good friends, and 1 to a person whom you love purely for the sake of Allah.
# Make commitment to join Islamic study circles to learn more about Islam and improve your own life.
# Donate generously to the Masajid, Islamic organizations, and any where people are in need or oppressed. "Because Ramadan, is a month of sharing!"
# Share month of Ramadan and its teachings of peace and patience with your neighbours.
# Sleep little, eat little! Make sure you do not defeat the purpose of fasting by over-indulging in food and being lazy.
# Seek the rare and oft-neglected rewards of the night better than 1000 months (Laylatul-Qadr / Shab-e-Qadr).
# Weep in private for the forgiveness of your sins: Ramadan is the month of forgiveness and Allah's Mercy! It's never too late.
# Learn to control your tongue and lower your gaze. Remember the Prophet's (pbuh) warning that lying, backbiting, and a lustful gaze all violate the Ramadan fast!
# Encourage others to enjoin and love goodness, and to abandon everything that Allah dislikes. Play the role of a Da'ee (one who invites to Allah) with zeal, passion, and sympathy.
# Experience the joy of Tahajjud prayers late at night and devote yourself purely and fully to Allah in the Itikaf retreat during the last 10 days of Ramadan.
