Why are the mainstream media so disrespectful of other countries. Turkey is now known as Türkiye. Even the U.S. State Department has changed the spelling officially to Türkiye. The mainstream media also insist on spelling Macao as Macau which is the Portuguese colonial spelling. China spells the city name with an "o", not a "u".

Turkish minister tells US ambassador ‘Take your dirty hands off Turkey’ as sanctions sparks fly

Tensions between Ankara and Washington have flared up with the US warning Turkey about the export to Russia of chemicals, microchips and other products that can be used in Moscow's war effort in Ukraine and Turkish interior minister Suleyman Soylu launching an attack on the American ambassador to his country, saying: 'Take your dirty hands off of Turkey. I’m being very clear. I very well know how you would like to create strife in Turkey. Take your grinning face off from Turkey.'

Turkey’s parliamentary and presidential elections scheduled for May 14 are fast approaching—angry rhetoric from the Erdogan regime, designed to nationalistically rouse its core vote, is no surprise. Nor are angry interventions from US politicians who dislike the unreliability of Turkey as a Nato ally, but at the same time stop short of anything that could irretrievably wreck relations with a country crucially located at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

Nevertheless, sparks are flying.

Brian Nelson, the US Treasury Department's top sanctions official, visited Turkish government and private sector officials on February 2 to urge more cooperation in disrupting the flow of goods that Russia can put to use in persisting with its war on the Ukrainians.

In a speech to bankers, reported by Reuters, Nelson said a pronounced year-long rise in exports to Russia left Turkish entities 'particularly vulnerable to reputational and sanctions risks', or lost access to G7 markets.

They should, he said, 'take extra precaution to avoid transactions related to potential dual-use technology transfers that could be used by the Russian military-industrial complex'.

'There is no surprise ... that Russia is actively looking to leverage the historic economic ties it has in Turkey,' a senior US official, who requested anonymity, told Reuters, adding: 'The question is what is the Turkish response going to be.'

In separate talks with Turkish firms, Nelson 'urgently' flagged the way Russia is believed to be dodging Western controls to re-supply plastics, rubber and semi-conductors found in exported goods and used by the military, the official was also quoted as saying.

As reported at the end of last week, US officials are, meanwhile, tightening another sanctions noose that could leave Russian and Belarusian airlines flying US and European-made aircraft to Turkish airports without ground services.

Word of this move spread at the same time as interior minister Soylu started hitting out at Western countries for issuing security alerts about potential terrorist attacks in Turkey, saying these nations were waging “psychological warfare” on Turkey with the aim of wrecking the post-covid pandemic recovery of its tourism industry. A massive surge in Russian tourists has been a big part of the industry’s improved fortunes.

Whether Soylu—a known ardent critic of the US, whom he blames for the 2016 attempted coup against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan—had Nelson’s trip to Turkey in mind as he let loose his latest invective is not known, but he was unsparing as he railed against US Ambassador to Ankara Jeffry Flake, saying during an address made at a ministerial event in Antalya: “Every US ambassador who arrives in Turkey is hurrying to find out how to make a coup possible in Turkey”.

“I address the US ambassador from here. I know the journalists you made write articles,” he added.

As Turkey continues to threaten an effective veto against Sweden’s bid to join Nato—protesting, among other things, that Stockholm is not doing enough to extradite Kurdish and Gulenist “terrorists” to Ankara or stop far-right activists from mounting protests in which the Qur’an holy book is burned—another growing difficulty in Turkish-US relations is Turkey’s request to the US to acquire F-16 fighter jet aircraft.

A group of bipartisan US senators is proposing that any such sale should be tied to Turkey’s openness to accepting Sweden, and Finland, into Nato.

On February 2, Democrat Senator Jeanne Sheheen and Republican Senator Thom Tillis, who are co-chairs of the Senate Nato Observer Group, drafted a letter to President Joe Biden saying that “Congress cannot consider future support for Türkiye, including the sale of F-16 fighter jets, until Türkiye completes ratification of the accession protocols [for Sweden and Finland].” This letter was followed by 25 colleagues supporting this decision.

US Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland last week gave assurances to Congress that the Biden administration has made it clear to Turkey that if it does not budge on the Nato expansion then F-16 upgrades will not happen nor will any additional sales of F-16 fighter jets.

“We have made the same point to our Turkish allies … that we need this Congress’s support moving forward for the security enhancements that we think that they need, as allies, F16s, some of them [aircraft] are old, but that this Congress is likely to look far more favourably on that after ratification,” said Nulan.

With the Nato expansion dispute dragging on, more and more voices in Western media opposed to Turkey’s strongman, Erdogan, are starting to make themselves heard.

Columnist for The Observer Simon Tisdall on February 5 attacked Erdogan under the heading: Turkey’s two-faced ‘sultan’ is no friend of the west. It’s time to play hardball.”

The BBC, looking at issues such as Turkey’s acute cost of living crisis, reported on February 5: “There is a lot at stake in the upcoming elections, with opposition figures arguing that it will be a choice between increasing autocracy or democracy.”

Quit Smoking before 2014 with 14AndOut Natural Method!

If you have the will, 14andOut is the Way!!

premium.naturalnews.tv/14AndOut__TV.htm

Where there is a will, there is a way:

14AndOut is my revolutionary invention which helps smokers quit the habit naturally in 14 days or less. Since it’s creation about two years ago, tons of positivity has poured in and out, from emails to compliments to people enjoying their freedom from nicotine. I am so happy for everyone who purchased the program, including the video, which sold over 600 copies for 2012. That’s 600 people avoiding cancer and tuning into their natural, spiritual life that cigarettes were trying to rob them of. They are free to feel good without guilt and without the weight of all of those chemicals. www.14andout.com/

Every summer I attend the David Wolfe seminar in Baltimore to learn more about everything from Superfoods to natural remedies to more tools for smokers who want to quit the habit. David is a world leader in natural advice about foods, herbs, tinctures, indigenous medicines, and natural healing which grows by Mother Nature across the planet. He walks the walk when it comes to nutrition too. He lives in Canada but tours the U.S. frequently and has 2 to 3 day seminars where the audience doesn’t even get up to use the restroom until David takes a break. It’s amazing. Some of the nutrition recommended in 14AndOut comes directly from his “blueprint plan” for success.

www.davidwolfe.com/

David Wolfe has also read my book “Don’t Eat Cancer” and complimented my style of writing. I am blessed to know people like David. Here’s the link to my book if you want to check it out too:

Also, Mike Adams, the Health Ranger is one of my favorite people on this planet. Mike is the Editor of Natural News.com and he writes articles EVERY DAY about organic living and how the politics around us try to affect natural living. He is a master of explaining what most people are in the dark about, including current events and even legislation in Congress which directly affects organic food, drinks, and natural remedies. I believe Mike Adam’s natural news store is one of the most efficient, affordable, and reliable sources for Superfood, storing organic food, and survival needs:

store.naturalnews.com/.

Mike Adams is relentless when it comes to publishing the truth about cigarettes too. Every month on Naturalnews.com you will find about 5 to 10 great articles about natural ways to end the habit that 43,000,000 Americans a stuck in, and that’s nicotine addiction. Some people like to go to hypnotists and acupuncturists, and some people just buy 14AndOut at webseed.com and get a thorough review of chemicals, behavior modification, and the “yellow brick road” of nutrition. Mike Adams has done interviews with me on the logic and theories behind the program, and how its unique, addressing parts of the smoking habit no other program ever speaks about. The preview trailer for 14AndOut also features Mike Adams. You can watch it here:

The first edition book IMPRESIONES DE TAGA-ILOG, published in Madrid by Imprenta de El Progreso Tipografico in 1891, containing articles defending his oppressed people from the malicious attacks of anti Filipino writers. There are fewer extant Impresiones than the first edition of Noli me Tangere. This work was dedicated to the author's brother, the celebrated painter Juan Luna y Novicio.

Gregorio F. Zaide in Great Filipinos in History (1970), said: "Shortly after the publication of his Impresiones, a biased Spanish journalist who had resided in the Philippines named Celso Mir Deas lambasted Luna’s book in El Pueblo Soberano, a newspaper in Barcelona, and, not contented with ridiculing Luna, he continued to write articles calumniating the Filipino people." Luna, who was noted for his volcanic temper, exploded in anger. The Filipinos in Madrid, including Jose Alejandrino and Galicano Apacible, tried to pacify him, but in vain. Luna insisted on going to Barcelona to have a confrontation with Mir Deas.

Aleandrino accompanied him, hoping that Luna’s determination to kill the Spanish journalist in a duel might be averted by an amicable settlement, but his hope for a peaceful arrangement was dashed to pieces. For several days, Luna searched the cafes of Barcelona looking for Mir Deas. Finally, on November 26, 1889, he saw the journalist drinking coffee at the Café de los Cristales. Raging like an angry lion, he approached the table of the culprit, publicly spat on his face, called him a rascal, and challenged him to a duel. Mir Deas was shocked by the public insult, but refused to accept the challenge for a duel hurled by Luna. By this incident Luna proved to the Spanish people, particularly those who witnessed the incident, that a brown Indio was ready to fight for his personal honor as well as for the honor of his people, unlike the Mir Deas who was quick to slander the colored race, but was afraid to fight to vindicate his own honor.

New York City, April 13, 2011—PEN American Center today named Nasrin Sotoudeh, a writer, lawyer, and leader of the women’s and children’s rights movement in Iran, as the recipient of its 2011 PEN/Barbara Goldsmith Freedom to Write Award. Sotoudeh was arrested on September 4, 2010, and is now serving an 11-year sentence for her outspoken advocacy in defense of her clients arrested after the June 2009 presidential elections and interviews she gave to human rights organizations and media about their cases.

The award, which honors international literary figures who have been persecuted or imprisoned for exercising or defending the right to freedom of expression, will be presented at PEN’s Annual Gala on April 26, 2011, at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi, a close friend and associate of Ms. Sotoudeh, will attend the PEN Gala on April 26, 2011, and receive the award on her behalf. Ms. Ebadi, who is the author of Iran Awakening and the newly released memoir The Golden Cage: Three Brothers, Three Choices, One Destiny, will be available for interviews in conjunction with the event.

“Nasrin Sotoudeh not only embodies the spirit of the PEN/Barbara Goldsmith Freedom to Write Award, but also the spirit of this remarkable year,” said Kwame Anthony Appiah, president of PEN American Center. “As a writer, as an activist, and as a lawyer she has dedicated herself to a simple and powerful idea: the principle that the rights guaranteed by law are absolute and shared equally by all. At a moment when women and men around the world are standing together peacefully to reclaim this most basic truth, she is in one of the world’s most infamous prisons, to the great shame of the Iranian government. In honoring her with this award, we stand with the millions of Iranians she has stood up for and inspired, and we urge individuals and governments around the world to join us in pressing for her immediate release.”

Nasrin Sotoudeh, who is 47 and the mother of two young children, began her activism in 1991 as the only female writer for the Nationalist-religious publication Daricheh Goftegoo; one of her first projects was to prepare a series of interviews, reports, and articles on Iranian women to mark International Women’s Day, all of which her editor refused to run. After completing her Master’s Degree in International Law at Shahid Behshti University, Sotoudeh passed the bar exam in 1995 but was not permitted to practice law for another eight years, and so she concentrated on journalism instead, writing for several reformist newspapers, including Jame’e. When she was finally granted a law license in 2003, she specialized in women’s and children’s rights while continuing to write articles addressing these issues. Her clients have included women’s rights activists, among them the organizers of the grassroots, door-to-door One Million Signatures Campaign; journalists such as Isa Sharkhiz; political activists such as Hashmat Tabarzadi, head of Iran’s banned opposition group the Democratic Front; and Shirin Ebadi herself. She has also represented prisoners sentenced to death for crimes committed when they were minors and many Iranian opposition activists arrested in the crackdown following the June 12, 2009 presidential elections.

On August 29, 2010, security officers raided Sotoudeh’s home and office, confiscating several of her files and documents. Authorities also froze her assets. On September 4, 2010, she was summoned to the special court in Evin prison and arrested on charges of “propaganda against the state,” “cooperating with the Human Rights Defenders Center,” and “conspiracy to disturb order.” She was denied access to her lawyer and was restricted family visits for the first several months of her detention.

On January 9, 2011, Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court sentenced Sotoudeh to a total of 11 years in prison—one year for “propaganda against the regime,” and a total of 10 years for the two charges of “acting against national security” and “violating the Islamic dress code (Hijab) in a filmed speech.” The court also banned her from practicing law and from traveling outside the country for 20 years, a term that begins after her release from prison and that for all intents and purposes confines her to Iran and bars her from her profession for life.

Sotoudeh has gone on several hunger strikes since her arrest, refusing even water during one 11-day stretch, to protest her detention and ill-treatment inside Evin Prison. She has reportedly lost a considerable amount of weight and is in poor health. She is being held in Ward 209 of Evin Prison, where she has spent much of the time in solitary confinement. Sotoudeh is still awaiting a decision in the court of appeals.

In announcing the award today in New York, Freedom to Write Program Director Larry Siems praised Nasrin Sotoudeh’s “unyielding spirit in her fight for justice, equality, and the rule of law in Iran.”

“From the start, Nasrin Sotoudeh has insisted on voicing the unspoken realities of post-revolutionary Iran,” Siems said. “The struggles of women, the experiences of minors swept up in Iran’s judicial system, the aspirations of writers, journalists and ordinary Iranians to engage in free and open debate about their country’s future—Nasrin has risked her own freedom to make sure these are acknowledged in Iran. That they have been acknowledged by sending her to prison speaks volumes about the Iranian leadership; that she is a hero and an inspiration to millions of her countrymen says even more about the Iranian people.”

Siems joined Appiah in urging the Obama administration to press Iranian authorities to bring their country into step with the human rights revolutions sweeping through the Middle East and release Sotoudeh, one of the most visible symbols of these universal values in Iran. “President Ahmadinejad has repeatedly praised the popular uprisings in the region while at the same time Iran’s security forces have been brutally suppressing peaceful demonstrations and dissent in Iran. This hypocrisy is lost on no one, at home or abroad.”

Writer, historian and PEN Member Barbara Goldsmith underwrites the PEN/Barbara Goldsmith Freedom to Write Award. This is the 25th year the award has honored an international literary figure who has been persecuted or imprisoned for exercising or defending the right to freedom of expression. Candidates are nominated by PEN International and any of its 145 constituent PEN centers around the world, and screened by PEN American Center and an Advisory Board comprising some of the most distinguished experts in the field. The Advisory Board for the PEN/Barbara Goldsmith Freedom to Write Award includes Carroll Bogert, Associate Director of Human Rights Watch; Vartan Gregorian, President of the Carnegie Corporation; Joanne Leedom-Ackerman, International Vice President of PEN International; Aryeh Neier, President of the Open Society Institute; and Joel Simon, Executive Director of the Committee to Protect Journalists.

The Freedom to Write Award is an extension of PEN’s year-round advocacy on behalf of the more than 900 writers and journalists who are currently threatened or in prison. Forty-five women and men have received the award since 1987; 32 of the 36 honorees who were in prison at the time they were honored were subsequently released.

PEN American Center is the largest of the 145 centers of PEN International, the world’s oldest human rights organization and the oldest international literary organization. The Freedom to Write Program of PEN American Center works to protect the freedom of the written word wherever it is imperiled. It defends writers and journalists from all over the world who are imprisoned, threatened, persecuted, or attacked in the course of carrying out their profession. SystemImager and BitTorrent: a peer-to-peer approach to large scale OS deployment

von Erich Focht (NEC HPC Europe), Andrea Righi (CINECA), Brian Finley (Argonne National Laboratory), Bernard Li (Pharma startup in Bay Area)

Donnerstag, 31.05.2007, Saal 4: Kaiserslautern , 11:00-12:00 Uhr

This paper describes the integration of BitTorrent as a transport method to deploy OS images to a large number of clients using SystemImager (http://www.systemimager.org). Traditionally, the classical client-server model does not scale well, thus large deployments, such as big clusters or complex grid-computing environments, need to be staged. An alternative scalable and reliable method for image distribution needs to be implemented and BitTorrent seems to be a natural fit. Measurements with big clusters of hundreds of nodes show that the SystemImager BitTorrent deployment scales as expected and dramatically exceeds the performance of the existing multicast and rsync deployment methods. Experimental results of deployment time and bandwidth analysis on a large installation are documented in the paper to confirm the advantages of the peer-to-peer approach with respect to the other transports. The speed of the deployment and the support for heterogenous harware provides the means to deploy virtual clusters which are built on the same resource pool, where it is possible to dynamically re-initialize workspaces on user demand.

Andrea and Jill were hanging out and wanted some photos, so I sprang into action.

I felt like they looked like plucky girl detectives here. Like they'd have a book series about them in the 50s, and it would become a big franchise and there'd be a revival in the nineties and later on people would write articles about how they were empowering for women because they were very self-reliant and didn't need to be rescued by men, but there would also be other articles written about how it's sexist to refer to them as "girl detectives" because you never refer to someone as a "man detective", and isn't the adjective "plucky" just a little bit demeaning?

Anyway.

Later, I photographed a belly dance show.

This morning I took the train to Bologna (look at my hair, it was a very windy day), I had an meeting with a girl of the editorial staff of the journal-diary I cooperate with, I wanted to buy one of their new published book, but she offered it because - she said - I write articles for them every month...thanks a lot for the gift!!

(29/365)

The next Monday is the 13th of August and the beginning of one of the worst weeks in Elliot’s life. In the morning Elliot has a meeting with his manager Oskar Lumi and Kyle Melor, music agent from the record company Woodstory Records, in Oskar’s office…

Music agent Kyle Melor: “Do you smoke cigars? I brought some really good stuff directly from my last visit to Cuba.” (offers the box to Elliot)

Elliot: “Go on then… (takes a cigar and lights it) Cheers.”

Kyle (shows papers to Elliot): “This is how the concert hall looks that I booked you in for next month. You’re going to have two shows in it for starters, and after that… (winks) the world is your oyster!”

Elliot (looks at the papers baffled): “Oh wow… I don’t know what to say…”

Kyle: “And don’t forget about the upcoming festival, restaurant, café, bar and library gigs either. They are much smaller in scale of course, but all this is going to create a great fan base for you here in Trolliwood and other Southern cities, and after that we can start thinking about expanding.”

Elliot (looks at Kyle confused): “Expanding?”

Oskar (smiles at Elliot widely): “Expanding as in even bigger audiences in stadiums and abroad. The Australian radio interview was a great success, and I’ve already been contacted by concert organizers across the globe. All music and gossip magazines write articles about you, and they are begging for interviews. Somebody is setting up an official website for you as we speak. You’ve become a phenomenon! (winks) Good self-promoting that interview was, by the way. You really made a bunch of teenage girls cry with that sob story of yours.”

Elliot (stares at Oskar shocked): “Whoa! That really was not my intention in any way or sha…”

Oskar (interrupting): “We’re going to make you sing in the next radio show! YES! And we’re going to get more teenage girls to interview you… (writes something down on his computer) Next time, do try to be more kid-friendly, okay?”

Elliot (coughs): “Teenage girls?”

Kyle: ”Yep! Everybody loves a reformed player and con, but you need to know where to draw the line, because…”

Elliot (interrupts Kyle shocked): “A con? I ain’t a con! (almost accidentally drops his cigar on his lap) Uhh!”

Kyle (drily): “An ex-con, I said. And you weren’t in prison for nothing, alright. We know you have smoked much heavier stuff than what you are smoking now. There’s no need to make excuses for it.”

Elliot (coughs): “I ain’t making excuses…”

Oskar (ignores Elliot): “Anyway, what I was saying is that parents don’t want their kids hearing about your drug abuse or how rough you like it in the bedroom... Hah! (grins as he stares at his papers) It could affect ticket sales. Even Justice Beaver doesn’t talk about his private life that way, although the pop star is a total idiot.”

Kyle: (gives Elliot an amused look)

The Boyce Building in Chicago (1921). It is the only surviving building associated with the W. D. Boyce Publishing Company. The building is generally considered to be a Daniel Burnham design, although this claim has been disputed. Burnham certainly submitted plans to Boyce for the building, but the final product barely resembles his drawings. An additional eight stories were added in 1921. Boyce published the Saturday Blade, a rural newspaper that was one of the first distributed by newsboys. It was the most widely circulated weekly newspaper in the U.S. by 1892. The success of the Blade led Boyce to found his namesake publishing company. Boyce was a labor activist, and invited muckraking journalists such as Henry Demerest Lloyd to write articles for his papers. Boyce also financed a 1896 expedition to Alaska; the discovery of gold on this expedition contributed the the start of the Yukon Gold Rush.

According to legend, Boyce was lost in the London fog one night when an unknown scout offered him aid. When Boyce tried to tip him, the scout refused, claiming it was his duty as one of General Robert Baden-Powell's Boy Scouts. Inspired by this act, Boyce founded the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) in this building in 1910. However, Boyce's conflicts with other BSA leaders kept him isolated from most of the early happenings with the organization. Boyce started his own scouting organization, the Lone Scouts of America, which was more focused on the needs of rural boys. It was eventually merged into the BSA in 1924. Boyce was the third person awarded with the Silver Buffalo (after Baden-Powell and the Unknown Scout), the highest honor bestowed by the BSA. Boyce died in the penthouse suite of the Boyce Building in 1929. To this day, The Boy Scout Manual recounts the tale of how Boyce met with the Unknown Scout.

Another Emanuel Hahn design. The Canadian stamp, featuring a Pacific Coast Indian house and totem pole was issued 2 February 1953. The H in the lower right corner identifies the design as Hahn's.

Library and Archives Canada's biographical sketch of Emanuel Hahn:

Emanuel Hahn, R.C.A., O.S.A., sculptor, designer, was born in Reutlingen, Germany, to a family that moved to Canada in 1888. Hahn studied at the Central Ontario School of Art under his brother Gustav Hahn, then returned to Germany and studied at the Kunstgewebeschule and the Kunstakademie-und-Polytechnikum in Stuttgart. When he moved back to Canada, he became Instructor of Design and Drawing at the Central Technical School. In 1910, he joined the faculty of the Ontario College of Art as instructor in modeling, and became Head, Department of Sculpture, there in 1922. Hahn was one of the three founding members of the Sculptor's Society of Canada in 1928, and that organization's first president. Hahn's love of the Canadian wilderness led him to write articles describing various wilderness scenes in Canadian magazines and newspapers, and would also be reflected in many of the subjects he dealt with in his coin and stamp design commissions. Hahn designed numerous medals, including ones for the Engineering Institute of Canada, the University of Toronto Alumni Association, the Tyrell medal for the Royal Society of Canada, the Engineering Institute of Canada, Engineering Alumnae of the University of Toronto, the medal for the Chemical Institute of Canada (1951), the Stephen Leacock medal, the Edward J. Drewry medal, and the Henry G. Acres medal. A sculpted bust of Sir Winston Churchill was adapted by his widow, sculptress Elizabeth Wyn Wood, a former student of Hahn, for a memorial medal of 1965. Hahn was a designer of stamps as well. Most of the stamps issued in the National Wildlife series of 1953 to 1957 were his designs, and the 1953 dollar stamp bore his design depicting a Pacific Coast Indian house and totem pole. The 4 cent stamp of 1953, commemorating the coronation, was also designed by Hahn. Hahn is best known for his designs for Canadian coinage. These were his dollar design of 1935, his ten-cent piece and twenty-five-cent piece designs of 1937. These designs, later retouched or redrawn or modified by others, were in usage for decades. He also designed the 1939 dollar commemorating the Royal Visit. Hahn's portrait sculptures include his head of arctic explorer and anthropologist Vilhjalmur Stefansson; and a bust of Elizabeth Wyn Wood, which was acquired by the National Gallery of Canada in 1928. Hahn is represented in the permanent collections of The National Gallery of Canada (several works) and the Art Gallery of Ontario. His large scale commissions include the monument to Annie Rowena Cutten and her sister Mrs. Helen Gertrude Moneur, in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto; the Edward Hanlan memorial in Toronto, 1926; and the Sir Adam Beck memorial, Toronto, 1929. He contributed panels representing the Northwest Territories and the Arctic to the Bank of Montreal building at the corner of King and Bay streets in Toronto.

Rob has been a professional portrait painter for nearly 40 years. He studied art and painting techniques under various well-known artists in Europe and the USA including master pastelist Daniel Greene, John Howard Sanden & Bob Gerbracht . In 1982 Rob became a member of the portrait institute of New York and attended an international portrait seminar in the USA where his pastel works received special mention. In 1983 Rob settled on the South Coast of Natal, South Africa where he purchased an art gallery through which he exhibited his work and executed portrait commissions during the next few years. His clients included members of parliament, mayors, TV personalities and prominent business people. He also had 2 sell-out one-man exhibitions during this period and several of his paintings were published as prints and distributed internationally. Rob exhibited regularly in Gaborone, Botswana where he received numerous commissions for portraits, including the State President, attorney general , diplomats and prominent business people. In 1997 Rob exhibited in Mauritius where he was featured in a magazine programme on TV and received several portrait commissions .

During the period 1998 to 2003 Rob exhibited regularly in Santa Maria, California, USA and received numerous commissions there as well as holding art workshops for other artists , and taking part in their local “quick-draw” art competition. He was represented in California by the David Ryan Gallery. He has also appeared on Santa Barbara TV where he gave a live portrait demonstration. He has also completed a portrait of former president Nelson Mandela for the municipal art gallery, Margate , KwaZulu Natal, South Africa.

Rob has become highly respected as a demonstrator and has conducted artist workshops in South Africa, Botswana, Mauritius, USA and the UK. Rob’s range of portrait painting videos have become top-selling art instruction DVDs across the UK , Europe & the USA & his latest DVD set “Capturing A Likeness” has been critically acclaimed by art magazines in the UK & abroad . Rob also writes articles for various art publications including leading UK art magazine “The Artist”. Keeping up with the times Rob also has a following on YouTube where he regularly posts video clips and answers queries from aspiring artists around the globe.

Rob's figurative paintings have become increasingly in demand and are collected by art buyers internationally. His last exhibition in South Africa was a sell-out with most of his works selling at the preview. He still however spends the major part of his painting time doing what he does best – painting portraits of people and he always has a portrait commission either in progress or in the planning stages.

Rob currently spends summer touring, giving demonstrations and hosting art instruction workshops across the UK. In winter he returns to his purpose- built studio in South Africa overlooking the Indian Ocean . There he gains the inspiration for most of the works seen on exhibition and in his prints and cards. Rob is currently represented in South Africa by the “Artists’ Gallery” Ramsgate, KwaZulu Natal.

© Tom Schandy / Wild Wonders of Europe

Tom Schandy from Norway has been interested in birds since he was a small boy. 12 years old he had his own bird-column in the local newspaper, and soon he started to illustrate his bird articles with own pictures. He studied biology at the University of Oslo and made his master on the lekking behaviour of the Great Snipe, and he financed his studies by selling pictures of birds and other creatures.

After finishing his studies he got a part-time job in WWF Norway, first as a conservation officer, later as an information officer. Rest of the time he worked as a freelance wildlife photographer and author. I 2000 he became full time author and professional wildlife photographer – and has never looked back. Now he searches the globe for nature – in order to write articles and make books. So far he has been involved in more than 20 books, mainly on natural history. Many books are local nature books, but he also made a book about Africa which has been published in both Norwegian, Swedish, English and Spanish (The magnificent Africa).

The last few years he has been concentrating on Latin-Americas wildernesses, and just now he is moving his attention to the northern wildernesses of the world, like Alaska, Canada. Spitsbergen and Russia.

The aspect of nature conservation forms a vital part of Tom Schandys photography. If his photos, books and articles on nature and wildlife can be used to promote the enjoyment of nature and inspire nature conservation and biological diversity, then much of the purpose has been achieved!

Troll doll, originally know as Leprechauns, became one of America’s biggest toy fad. It began in the autumn of1963, lasting through to 1965. With their brightly colored hair and their cute little faces, Life and Time Magazines decided to write articles which commented on the “good luck” they would bring to all who owned them.

Trolls became fads again in brief periods throughout the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, with as many as ten different manufacturers (such as Russ Berrie, Jakks Pacific, Applause, Hasbro, Mattel, Nyform, Trollkins and Ace Novelty) creating them.

AN ARCHITECTURAL TREASURE SAVED FOR NATION

The historic Middle Street Synagogue is to receive new life in the year ahead. English Heritage who have supported this vast project throughout are extremely enthusiastic for the preservation of this building which today showcases the many high points of the Victorian arts and crafts movement.

The community trustees have great pleasure in announcing that a major programme of building renovation works will commence imminently and continue well into next year. Brighton and Hove Hebrew Congregation's Board of Directors additionally hope to commence the complete internal restoration of the building also.

When completed it will be the finest building of it’s kind on the English Heritage list and a worthy addition to the many other exceptional historical buildings in the city of Brighton & Hove. It is the finest example of its kind to be seen anywhere in Britain today.

The building, originally designed by local architect Thomas Lainson, has been listed for decades for it’s fine interior which features a jaw-dropping riot of period stained glass windows, decorative architectural iron and brasswork, mosaic wall panels and much else.

The formal Brighton Jewish community dates back to at least 1780 and has continuously played an integral and harmonious part in the growth of Brighton as a city over the centuries. It has benefited from connections with the Sassoon family, Daniel Eliason (London owner of the Hope Diamond following the French Revolution) and the 19th century philanthropist Sir Moses Montifiore amongst many others. Famous statesmen, aristocrats, authors, composers and artists have all stepped through the doors and been a part of the community over the years.

Popular regionally and internationally

For the past dozen years the doors have been opened to the general public to enjoy the sights several times each year including throughout the Brighton Festival month. Regular educational tours are given for school groups of all ages from around Sussex. Other artistic, photographic, historical and charitable groups also visit regularly.

The building contains many memories and people regularly visit from across the globe to see where, for example, their great great-grandfather once came. We have an extensive historical archive stretching back to the beginnings of the 19th century and a vast library of books connected with the building some of which date back to reign of King George III.

Much to be done

Our almost constant sea breezes have taken their toll on the façade and side elevations over the past 134 years and much remediatory works are to be done. Internally the building is structurally sound and physically complete. In due course the full interior will be restored.

Changing tastes and fashions altered certain parts during the 20th century. The Grand Lobby was originally a rich Victorian green with Puginesque red and yellow terracotta floor tiles, fine English oak detailing and a mahogany and gold-leaf balustrade. Today the walls are blue and white and the gold balustrades are under dark brown paint but the green and gilding is all still there today, just under several layers! In the main hall all the exceptional Victorian brass work will need to be stripped of it’s darkened 1960s gold paint, repolished and relacquered to its oriignal appearance. All the fine English wrought iron railings will be stripped of the white paint added in the 1960s to reinstate their original Victorian black lacquered splendour. The stained glass windows all need the periodic half-century maintenance demanded by the lead framework.

A virtual tour

Until the works are completed only virtual tours are possible. We have a website with extensive information to download for free. There is also an interactive 3D photographic presentation by local photographer Duncan McNeill and this can all be seen at www.bhhc-shul.org\middlestreet . We have an extensive photographic group online also ( www.flickr.com/groups/middlestreet ) also a YouTube presence (http://www.youtube.com\middlestreet) and there is a “friends of” group on Facebook too.

More than a Museum

This is a living building still in use by the community. The eventual details of the building to become a cultural and architectural educational resource to the wider community regionally are still being fine tuned and will be announced in the months ahead. It is not intended that it will ever become some silent static museum piece however.

Sponsors and benefactors for this most worthy of local and regional heritage project are needed and get in touch if you can assist in any way.

Antonio Luna’s Impresiones

Antonio Luna

Madrid, El Progreso Tipografico

First Edition, 1891

6 3/4” x 5” (17 cm x 13 cm)

Opening bid: P 30,000

Provenance:

Private collection, Barcelona, Spain.

Lot 84 of the Leon Gallery / Asian Cultural Council auction on 20 February 2016. For more details, please go to www.leon-gallery.com

She's a mother and a Dean of a business school but she should be called Dean of Positivity! She impacts more than 600 students every year who come to study at her campus. She has regular personal development workshops and writes articles about ways of having a more fulfilling existence. She is firm but very fair and loved by her friends, family and colleagues. She also had a TedX talk and has written books.

NOTE:- Sadly after retirement as school principal Rev P.B.Amolik was involved in accusations of "Siphoning and selling Church Land" and even faced a "Jail term" as designated by the court. I as a student felt sad on reading his character assassination in print in the media as also his fall from grace. As a prolific letter writer i did write articles in his favour. Here are the Two articles i wrote.

1) Written on June 7th 2008 Respected Sir,

With great sorrow I have been observing your "Character assassination" in the media regarding misappropriation of "Church of North India real estate funds".

I belong to the elite batch of "Christ Churchites of 1975 I.C.S.E", in an era where we moulded our thoughts and ambitions through our teachers and the school environment.

Sir, my unerasable memory of you as the "STERN PRINCIPAL" who never used the cane but "VOICE CONTROL" over his students while teaching "Hindi author Premchand" has been my own method of management in my personal life as was my passion for English literature and writing from teacher Miss Flora.Gonsalves.

It saddens me to see you being maligned like a common swindler, besides ,you don't require the money as you are comfortably well-off with a small family.

How can a "PRINCIPAL" who served during the zenith of a school's eminence be accused of "FRAUD AND LAND-GRABBING" at a grand old age?

Hope, all that is written is pure politics at play and even if true, you still hold an important place in the development of one of your thousands of students. As humans we do have our human frailties and none are perfect.

I end with the film the school showed us in the 1970's -:"To Sir,With Love"-

Yours Respectfully,

Student of class of 1975. Rudolph.A.Furtado

2) Another letter written much later in 2013.

Rev P.B.Amolik was my principal in Christ Church school from the years 1968 to 1977 and i remember him as the principal who presided over the "Golden Age" of Christ Church School.During Rev P.B.Amolik's era the school reached its zenith in education as well as sports and today in 2013 many of Mumbai's prominent professionals will agree to my personal comments.I was saddened to read in the newspapers about the "CORRUPTION CHARGES" filed against Rev P.B.Amolik and initially thought that it might be petty Institutional politics, but, seems the charges have stuck over the years. On a visit to the school on the occasion of our annual "Alumni Get-together" i observed a shrinkage in the playing field grounds and hope the illustrious Christ Church School doesn't lose more ground to building construction. This school is one of the rare city schools to have a massive playground in the heart of Mumbai city..Rev P.B.Amolik might be touching the grand young age of 90 years and hope he clears his esteemed reputation and Christ Church remains the school of the youth i remember.

How Chinese Women Rate Foreign Men Using Chinese Dating Sites

While it is a well known fact that men across the globe feel a natural attraction towards Chinese women, it is also common knowledge that most people using Chinese dating sites tend to harbor certain pre-conceived notions about these females. On the other hand not many people are aware that the same holds true for Chinese women as well. In fact it is quite common for these women to choose a foreign mate for online dating based on their outlook about the country of their origin. Listed below are some common perceptions harbored by oriental ladies about some major foreign countries and their people.

Britain: Despite the fact that Hong Kong, the last colony of Britain, has been united with China for more than 15 years, Chinese females generally consider the British men to be imperialistic and aggressive. They feel that British men using Chinese dating sites exhibit traits that suggest a considerable decline in their gentlemanly behavior.

Germany: The general impression about Germany as a country among the Chinese women is that of a rigorous nation. Chinese females by and large consider German men to be technically well advanced, hard working and disciplined, even though they find them a bit stubborn about certain issues.

France: Like in the other parts of the world, Chinese ladies also consider France to be the hub of fashion and romance. Most of them feel that most French men are addicted to women and wine and love to spend their life in style and luxury. It is also a common perception that these men tend to be extremely proud and swanky.

Italy: For most Chinese females Italy is a country that has an abundance of both crime and beauty. A large number of females avoid dating Italian men on Chinese dating sites for the fear of becoming unknowingly associated with the Mafia. However, these women also hold great reverence for the ancient art and culture of the great Roman Empire.

You think you know the Escort business? Many of you wrongly think that it is an easy job, where money is earned quickly, effortlessly and that all women who sell their bodies choose this path because they have no other alternative.

Well, let me tell you you’re wrong!

Over the years and experiences, Escorts have learned how to deal about sexuality, psychology and social relationships. Their work is a mix of customer service and fantasizing. A large majority do it by choice and love and assume it. Being an Escort also provides them with a stable financial situation and contributes to the financing of projects (or lifestyles) that were not feasible until then.

To better inform the public about sex work, here are the 5 biggest preconceived ideas which surround this profession :

1- Sex work is easy! Prostitutes are lazy…

For many reasons I can say that this is not an easy job. Escorts work between 12 and 14 hours a day (sometimes even longer). They often spend an enormous amount of time finding a decent and appropriate place to receive their clients in privacy. Some are very active on social media and manage several accounts, answer their emails and text messages, publish and manage their advertising on different specialized sites, plan and prepare appointments with their customers, some even write articles… When an appointment is confirmed, they need on average between 30 minutes and 1 hour to get ready before their client arrives. Many of them spend a lot of time and money maintaining their body shape. In their daily work, the “girls of joy” do both physical and emotional work. They know how to listen to their clients’ confessions and make sure to please them, and have them get what they want.

2- Escorts spread diseases and infections

It is precisely because their body is their working tool that they cannot afford to put it in danger. Escorts pay twice as much attention to their health as women on average. A decent escort only offers safe intercourse. She also visits the gynecologist 2 to 4 times a year and regularly carries out screening tests. Her health is of paramount importance: if she is not in good shape, she cannot pay the bills and provide for herself and her family. Furthermore, neglecting her health would put her clients and reputation at risk. It would cost her her job.

3- Only weird people, losers and desperate men will see the Escorts

You would be surprised by the diversity of people who sees Escorts. Middle-aged couples who want to stimulate their love and sex lives, young soldiers who like to relax in good company during their service, lawyers, doctors, disabled men who want special relationships with someone… The work of Escort girls sometimes has a more therapeutic component but everything is always done with respect for the other. Escorts’ customers treat them with respect. The ladies are gentle with the gentlemen, just as much as the guests are with them.

4- Sex workers hate their jobs

At TheVelvetRooms, women have chosen to do this job because they want to be financially independent. Their work is very personal and intimate and they are very much involved in what they do. They see vulnerable people when they are naked and express their deepest desires. The relationships they have with their clients are sincere and they are happy when they relax, are relieved and come out of the rendezvous radiant and smiling !

5- Escorts are broken people

We often read that prostitutes have maintained electrical relations with their fathers, that their parents should not be proud of them, that they have not been to school… Certainly, there are women with little education, alcoholics and drug addicts who prostitute themselves. But by saying that, we are dehumanized the profession, it reinforces the stigma.

On the other hand, what is said very little in the media is that more and more Escort Girls are psychologically very stable, have done long studies and speak several languages. Some are still students, others work in responsible positions and are truly intellectually brilliant. They willingly choose to be a Service Provider to improve their financial situation and/or simply, for the pleasure of pleasing…

Varina Banks Howell Davis (May 7, 1826 – October 16, 1906) was the second wife of the politician Jefferson Davis, who became president of the Confederate States of America. She served as the First Lady of the new nation at the capital in Richmond, Virginia, although she was ambivalent about the war. Smart and educated, with family in both the North and South, she had unconventional views for her public role.

Howell Davis became a writer after the American Civil War, completing her husband's memoir. She was recruited by Kate Davis Pulitzer to write articles and eventually a regular column for Joseph Pulitzer's newspaper, the New York World. In 1891 Varina Davis moved to New York City to live full-time with her daughter Winnie after her husband's death. She acted to reconcile prominent figures of the North and South in the late nineteenth century.

Hollywood Cemetery is a large, sprawling cemetery located at 412 South Cherry Street in Richmond, Virginia. Characterized by rolling hills and winding paths overlooking the James River, it is the resting place of two United States Presidents, James Monroe and John Tyler, as well as the only Confederate States President, Jefferson Davis. It is also the resting place of 25 Confederate generals, more than any other cemetery in the country; these include George Pickett and J.E.B. Stuart.

Dr. Mark S. Wade came to Kamloops from Victoria in 1895. He was an eye, ear, nose and throat specialist, as well as a gold prospector, journalist, historian and City Councillor. Wade was fascinated with the storey of the Overlanders of 1862. This was a group of adventurers who travelled across Canada by wagon, foot and raft to reach the gold fields of B.C. Wade made a trip retracing the route of the Overlanders, and then wrote the definitive book on the subject. He continued to write articles and give lectures on the Overlander storey for many years.

The basic shape of the house is similar to the undecorated, angular houses popular in the 1910 period. Unlike those later houses, Wade’s house is rich in Victorian millwork and slender, turned verandah columns. Bay windows, stained glass, and a wraparound verandah are lovely features to this home.

The other day I had what I consider my first "real" photo shoot. A friend's boss needed some portrait shots taken for his business. He occasionally writes articles and he does talks at conventions or seminars so he needed some publicity shots for those events and publications. My friend mentioned that I take a fair photograph so he had me come in last night and take some shots.

I've done some shots at some MCW events, but those are usually one or two quick shots of the wrestlers between matches and not very involved when it comes to time spent with the subject. This time I got to really talk with my subject and feel him out for what he needed and wanted for his shots. It was a interesting experience and fun as well.

All in all, I'm really please at how they turned out. Not too bad, if I do say so myself (and I do) for my first outing as something more than just a hobbyist.

If I recall correctly, I think we took about 70 shots with different backdrops and poses. These three are my favorites of the shots.

Take ye the honey cup

The honied song raise up,

Drink of the spring's allure,

April and dew and rain;

Brown of the earth sing sure,

Cheeks and lips and hair

And soft breath that kisseth where

Thy lips have come not yet to drink.

"Ezra Weston Loomis Pound (30 October 1885 – 1 November 1972) was an American expatriate poet and critic, and a major figure in the early modernist movement in poetry. He became known for his role in developing Imagism, which, in reaction to the Victorian and Georgian poets, favored tight language, unadorned imagery, and a strong correspondence between the verbal and musical qualities of the verse and the mood it expressed. His best-known works include Ripostes (1912), Hugh Selwyn Mauberley (1920), and his unfinished 120-section epic, The Cantos, which consumed his middle and late career, and was published between 1917 and 1969.

Working in London in the early 20th century as foreign editor of several American literary magazines, Pound helped to discover and shape the work of contemporaries such as T. S. Eliot, James Joyce, Robert Frost, and Ernest Hemingway. It was Pound who was responsible for the publication in 1915 of Eliot's "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock", and for the serialization from 1918 of Joyce's Ulysses. Hemingway wrote in 1925: "He defends [his friends] when they are attacked, he gets them into magazines and out of jail. He loans them money. ... He writes articles about them. He introduces them to wealthy women. He gets publishers to take their books. He sits up all night with them when they claim to be dying ... he advances them hospital expenses and dissuades them from suicide."

Outraged by the loss of life during the First World War, he lost faith in England, blaming usury and international capitalism for the war. He moved to Italy in 1924 where throughout the 1930s and 1940s, to his friends' dismay, he embraced Benito Mussolini's fascism, expressed support for Adolf Hitler, and wrote for publications owned by the British fascist Oswald Mosley. The Italian government paid him during the Second World War to make hundreds of radio broadcasts criticizing the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and in particular Jews, broadcasts that were monitored by the U.S. government, as a result of which he was arrested for treason by American forces in Italy in 1945. He spent months in detention in a U.S. military camp in Pisa, including 25 days in a six-by-six-foot outdoor steel cage that he said triggered a mental breakdown: "when the raft broke and the waters went over me." Deemed unfit to stand trial, a decision disputed for decades after his death, he was incarcerated in St. Elizabeths psychiatric hospital in Washington, D.C., for over 12 years.

While in custody in Italy he had begun work on sections of The Cantos that became known as The Pisan Cantos (1948), for which he was awarded the Bollingen Prize in 1949 by the Library of Congress. The honor triggered enormous controversy, mostly because of his antisemitism, and in part because it raised literary questions about whether a supposedly mad poet who held such contentious views could produce work of any value. He was released from St. Elizabeths in 1958, thanks to a protracted campaign by his fellow writers, and returned to live in Italy until his death. His political views ensure that his work remains controversial; in 1933 Time magazine called him "a cat that walks by himself, tenaciously unhousebroken and very unsafe for children." Hemingway nevertheless wrote, "The best of Pound's writing—and it is in the Cantos—will last as long as there is any literature.""
