The armored construction of this M4 Sherman tanks ensures that it will continue to fight the onslaught or corrosion in the shallow water near Saipan for many years to come, but inevitably, it is a battle it cannot win.

Thanks to our friends at the Army Museum of South Australia, this has been identified as a Consolidated B-24 Liberator. An American heavy bomber, the United States procured Liberators for the RAAF for use in the South West Pacific theatre of war, where they saw service in New Guinea, Borneo and the Netherlands East Indies.

Every day, hundreds of University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa students walk by a sculpture in the Queen Liliʻuokalani Student Services Center. It honors 169 UH students who were members of the ROTC program when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor in 1941, plunging the country into World War II. They were immediately mobilized into the Hawaiʻi Territorial Guard and began keeping watch over vital installations.

The government classified the ROTC students as enemy aliens because of their Japanese ancestry. They responded by offering to serve in a labor battalion dubbed the Varsity Victory Volunteers.

Goodyear FG-1D, c/n 3111 , was buit by Goodyear at their plant in Akron, Ohio. And delivered with United States Navy Bureau Number (BuNo) 88297 on April 11, 1945. In May 1945 she was dispatched to Guam where she would serve with Fleet Air Wing 2 in the Pacific until December of the same year when she returned to the US.

From mid-1946 she was assigned to the US Naval Air Reserve and was stationed at numerous Naval Air Stations including Minneapolis, Memphis and Columbus. In October 1949 she was stored at Lichfield Park, Arizona for the first time until she arrived at the station again being struck of charge in March 1955.

She was sold to ALU-MET Smelters on January 23, 1959 to be melted as scrap but she was saved by Frank Tallman, a stunt man, who bought her in 1960 and registered her as N9154Z. He restored the Corsair and flew with her from Orange County Airport, California until she was sold to Rosen Novak Auto Company, Omaha, New England on February 18 1966. She was weathered, but still in the colours of Columbus Naval Air Reserve, her last unit with the United States Navy Reserve.

On May 29, 1968, she was sold at an auction back at Orange County, to Johan M. Larsen, Minneapolis, Minnesota who owned her until 1972. She was then at the Minnesota Aircraft Museum, Minneapolis until 1975 when she was sold to Louis E. Antonacci, Hampshire, Illinois in 1983 and was registered as N8297.

In 1986 she was acquired by the Fighter Collection based at Duxford andshe was shipped to Rotterdam Harbour where she arrived on April 21, 1986. She was entered in the UK register as G-FGID and until March 1997 she was painted in the colours of VF-17 "Jolly Rogers", in the markings of the peronal Corsair of Lieutenant Ira Kepford, who was credited with 16 Japanese victories.

In Spring 1997 she was repainted as Corsair Mk IV (the UK name for the FG-1D) with serial KD345 coded A-130 of 1850 Naval Air Squadron, 13th Carrier Air Group based on HMS Vengeance with the British Pacific Fleet in December of 1945.

KD345 was one of 2.012 Corsairs (Mk I to IV) in service with the Fleet Air Arm (FAA) and supplied to 45 Squadrons througout World War Two. The FAA was the first to operate from a carrier, not in the Pacific as expected, but in the North Sea. On April 2 1944, Corsairs of 1834 NAS, based on HMS Victorious took part in an attack on the German battleship Tirpitz, providing fighter cover for the Barracudas.

Politics rule Congress. The platforms of our political parties often take precedence over a fair way and what is necessary to govern. While the Republicans bring up "emergency" bills to defund National Public Radio, people are having trouble paying their mortgages and finding jobs. We didn't vote you into office only to have you lose your focus. Replace the rhetoric with real legislation that will help the economy. Keep the politics off the Congressional floor and back rooms.
