As soon as you're born they make you feel small

By giving you no time instead of it all

Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all

A working class hero is something to be

A working class hero is something to be....

During the First World War, about 2,500 people from the Toronto neighbourhood of Earlscourt, which was made up mainly of workingclass British immigrants, enlisted for military service – more per capita than from any other district in Canada. Over 320 were killed, and many more were wounded.

Following the Great War, His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales (the future King Edward VIII) joined hundreds of residents at Prospect Cemetery on August 27, 1919, to honour the war dead and commemorate the sacrifices of the citizens of Earlscourt. He planted a silver maple (Acer saccharinum) in this veterans’ section of the cemetery in honour of his comrades-in-arms. Many of the silver maples now growing in the Mount Pleasant Group of Cemeteries were propagated from the seeds of this tree.

“They gave up their own lives that others

might live in freedom. Let those who come

after see to it that their names be not

forgotten.”

Thresholds of Labour: Havana’s Quiet Acts of Maintenance

At doorway number 412, an elderly man stands poised with a worn broom—an everyday sentinel in the choreography of urban upkeep. His stance is casual but purposeful, framed by the deep blue molding that outlines the entrance like a stage. The wall behind him is worn, tiled in fragments, hinting at decades of use and neglect. Yet here, in this moment, the act of cleaning becomes a quiet ritual of care.

He wears green pants and a sleeveless shirt, a yellow tape measure clipped to his waistband—a detail that speaks to versatility, to readiness for tasks beyond sweeping. His shoes are scuffed, his posture relaxed, and the doorway itself is a portal not just to a building, but to the layered textures of Havana’s lived spaces.

The exterior is whitewashed, but time has etched its presence into every surface. This is not a tourist’s Havana—it’s the Havana of labor, of dignity in repetition, of people who shape the city not with grand gestures, but with steady hands and quiet resolve.

The best pie and mash shop on Earth since 1929.

A Grade ll listed building, it is noted by English Heritage for it's 'exceptionally complete interior'. it was owned by the Manze family until 1970.

I used to go in occasionally on Saturday mornings in the late 60's with my mum and sister's. I always remember the tray in the window being full of large writhing eels.

These facades on the Lindengracht (206-220) refer to the working-class neighborhood that the Jordaan was: there are 8 craft professions recognisable on the facades. But what I liked most were the carved out faces on the chapels on top. Zoom in to see them.

I've lived in upstate New York basically my entire life. In many ways this area is a microcosm for the entire country (as you can see with the Pro-Trump sign in the following pictures).

While people think of New York as a Democratic stronghold, the areas outside the major cities are anything but. In fact, most of my friends and family in these rural areas have political leanings that are the complete polar opposite of mine.

As you can see from these sets many areas in upstate are very, very economically depressed. Walking around many of these "main streets" you could be excused if you think for a second you're in a ghost town.

How did these places get left behind? What has caused this divide? And most importantly, how can we bring it back together? You'll see from some of the pictures there have been attempts to rebuild these main streets. Only time will tell if there is any success.

This early row of cottages were originally built as low-cost housing for BHP miners and their families. The two-room cottages were built of timber and corrugated iron. The rooms were small; a living room on one side and a bedroom on the other. There was originally no bathroom or kitchen, so residents shared a communal facility.

This part of Broken Hill has been redeveloped, but its heritage buildings, like these cottages, have been preserved.
