Termites are every where, but like earth worms, most people do not ever see them. This three eights of an inch long termite was running away from the light, they HATE light. It had been eatting my hurricane window boards stored in the shed that I used to cover some wet concrete just before an afternoon thunder storm. The next day when I uncovered the concrete I found these termites had already built mud tubes to the ground. I photographed them so their image can live on (on Flickr) before I killed them. They don't make very good pets!

Camponotus molossus

We encouraged the Camponotus molossus workers out in the daytime. The major workers have large mandibles which can inflict a tear in the skin then bring their abdomen forward and spray the tear with formic acid. A bit of pain inflicted this way.

The major workers have large square heads but the minor workers have small heads as shown on the ant on the grasstree frond in the foreground.

They were milling around trying to work out what had disturbed them and soon retreated down the nest. They are a night foraging ant, spending the day inside the nest.

Termites forage inside a rotting tree limb. They need a certain amount of moisture to keep their thin skins from drying out and therefore are not likely to leave the nest. Kyogle, NSW.

Found a bunch of glass slides. Scanned them with my regular printer, but did not come out well. Will get a slide adapter in next few days to do better.
