Camponotus molossus

We encouraged the Camponotus molossus workers out in the daytime. The major workers have large mandibles which can inflict a tear in the skin then bring their abdomen forward and spray the tear with formic acid. A bit of pain inflicted this way.

The major workers have large square heads but the minor workers have small heads as shown on the ant on the grasstree frond in the foreground.

They were milling around trying to work out what had disturbed them and soon retreated down the nest. They are a night foraging ant, spending the day inside the nest.

The Enforcers are not a secret group of heroes. The Enforcers are all staff at Westpac, working together to protect our working rights. Knowing the rights that we have won previously, and working together are our two secret weapons.

All Finsec members at Westpac have basic rights to the proper pay, fair working hours and payment for overtime, having our tea breaks and adequate sick leave and annual leave when we need it, adequate staff levels, and a healthy and safe working environment free from bullying.

If you think your team is missing any of these things, join the campaign to enforce our rights.

Termites forage inside a rotting tree limb. They need a certain amount of moisture to keep their thin skins from drying out and therefore are not likely to leave the nest. Kyogle, NSW.

Every year, two million people climb into the cable cars suspended above the East River to visit Roosevelt Island. But from March through December 2010, the tram linking Manhattan and Roosevelt Island ceased to run. The job of renovating the New York icon fell to the French company Pomagalski, leader in urban cable transport. Behind this immense project nestled in between skyscrapers were the men who made it all possible.

They are American, French, Swiss and Canadian. Every week, their collaboration on the project requires them to confront their working methods and their cultures. After quickly realizing that my eye was a privileged witness of this astonishing aggregation, I tried to get as close as I could to those who shape our urban landscapes. I’ve discovered passions, hopes, audacities, roving, joys and pains. Above all, I’ve discovered an endearing generosity detectable in the eye of every workman on site. In front of my lens appeared a number of ordinary or atypical scenes which demonstrate the exceptional nature of adventuresome projects such as this. Today I pay tribute, in images captured through my own perspective, to the story of these workers.

Photojournalist and correspondent in the United States for more than a year, I chose to debrief from the world around me in an attempt to capture the snapshots which together compose every human existence.

Found a bunch of glass slides. Scanned them with my regular printer, but did not come out well. Will get a slide adapter in next few days to do better.
