I decided to custom build the mailbox for our new house. I browsed the internet for some style ideas and then modified it slightly and decided on how I wanted to build it.

The mailbox is built out of 6x6 cedar. I cut 2' off one end of the 8' post and ripped it down to give me 2 1/2" stock. I then cut the support arms for the box out of these pieces. I routed all edges with a 1/8" roundover and sanded all surfaces with a random orbit sander until smooth.

I drilled and hand chiseled out the mortise to accept the 2 1/2" square support arm which is seated 3 inches into the post. I cut the angled support arm out of the other remaining ripped piece of cedar from the post. The screws anchoring the angled support will be recessed and the holes plugged with cedar plugs I cut from other scraps.

I will post final pics of the mailbox upon completion. Just a fun project for a few afternoons.

Labels at top are of the best-known populations (at least 10 specimens); other taxa are labelled at bottom. The area of the ellipses is proportional to the number of individuals known. (With the exception of the big blob at right for Homo sapiens sapiens, which has been greatly shrunk to fit on this graph.)

The dataset needs to be refined further. Large blobs need to be broken up, and extant chimpanzees have not been added. The labeling is obviously too crowded.
