Now to shorten the other one, and mount them.

Here's how the left side wall (interior view), and door hinge assembly came out. It's perfect. Hooray. The routed channels are for shelving.

All the holes have been marked, and drilled. I used the drill press, and was just very careful about lining it up visually as I plunged in. I think the holes came out rather centered, no? Note that I usually pull the screws a bit off center when drilling, in the direction I want them to hold better, so the slight give when the system pulls everything will just pull them back to center. We're talking maybe 1/64". Just a hair.

Birch splotchiness. This is just how the wood is. I couldn't through stain alone get it to be anything other than this. Perhaps with some kind of sealer up front it may have been more uniform.

You can see how long the pull's standoff is here. The cut-off tool comes in from the back to slice the part free as it turns.

I used my General precision marking ruler to plot out finger holes for the fronts of the boxes, and did tests with different size Forstner bits.

I made some measurements down the edges of the panels, and just went with it.

Well *that* wasn't how I hoped they'd look. Glue seams I thought I'd sanded out of the inner corners came back to haunt me, leaving darker blotches inside the boxes. The grain of the wood soaked up different amounts of the dye, and contrary to the promises of aniline dyes being uniform, and not soaking in like stains, they did.

Painters tape ties all of the pieces together.

I will glue them like this, with the other side pressed flat against something to true them up. This will be the end I place down on the planer's table. I'm going to cut these all in half, and join them into a wider panel before that.

To get even more clamping pressure, I threw a Bessy Tradesman in there. Why not?

The rounding over of the box edges came out great. it feels like a little store-bought product now. I'm not sure where exactly I'd buy rounded over, divided, glued up, 1/4" panel boxes, but if I could buy them somewhere, I bet they'd be a lot like this :)

Actually, this thing does feel a lot like little potpourri boxes, and country cabinet drawers that I've seen. Mom used to have a country-themed store that sold stuff like this, albeit painted up in 'country colors.'

I was worried it wouldn't be sturdy enough, but the panels seem plenty stocky for the intended use.

Pretty obvious which color I chose here. They're quite close. Again, this is "Windsor Haze."

Holes are predrilled to a good depth, and perfectly in their marks. Time to attach the cabinet door catchplate.

Another little clamp party joins the glued-up side walls to the skeleton of the box, created by the floor, front, back, and dividers.

Not too bad. A light sanding will sharpen it up.

I decided as night fell to just get this little thing done. These are the cabinet door catches that will pull the doors firmly closed, and keep them from swinging open again. I've flipped the door on its top, and shimmed up this catch, after aligning its catchplate vertically in the wheels. Now I'm marking off the holes for pre-drilling, that I may attach the catchplate to the back of this door.

Parted off standoff piece, and shortened knob pull and screw.

Here's how the doors should look when it's all done. Just need some knobs, and catches.

Here's the difference. The left box is right after a glue-up, with no sanding. The right side has all rounded-over edges, finely sanded faces, and a sand-rounded through-hole on the front face.

When in the box, magazines will peek out like this.

I went through all my grits, down to 400, to get it all silky smooth.

Perfect fit. The leaf pulls should be well protected now in the box.

After a light sanding, now it needs a bit of tack cloth action to clear out the dust.

Next two, ready for wrapping.

Darker exposure. This isn't as true to how it looks, but it shows off some details a bit better.

Tests, and the final behind them.

Too prove things for myself, I set the catch on the top of the stand, and put the door upside down before it, clicking them together. The both sat flush on the stand top. These should work out great.

The hinge mortises came out of the router table just perfectly. Here, I've draped a hinge across both doors, just to see it.

When the pieces turned out to be slightly too long, I cut the ends off with the band saw. This thing makes pretty accurate little shavings.

One last shot of the hinged doors. They won't be together like this, but will be on opposite sides of the TV stand.

This is the angle people will tend to see more based on where it's going. I put all the better boards, and board ends on this side for that reason.

This box had almost no grain to it, and felt much dryer than the others, as though it was older, and more dried out. It took the dye best of all, but still not as I had hoped. Again, this was a sad time in the build. I was going to have to fix this somehow.
