"The grand Wolverine Diesel which stands ~10 feet tall. This engine was built in Bridgeport, CT in 1935 and generates 150 hp at 300 rpm. It's a marine-style engine adapted for industrial purposes. This engine was used for many years at the Thurston Ice, Oil & Coal Co. in Naugatuck, CT. Used in the ice manufacturing plant, it was both direct-coupled to a refrigeration compressor, and an alternator used to provide power to run other refrigeration units. The engine is five cylinder and has exposed valves trains. To fire this engine, it must first be turned over using compressed air. Manually lit cotton wicks in each cylinder provided the initial spark to fire the engine."

Watch it, Bub. Wolverine has always been a superhero I've known about (with the 2000 X-Men film, and my older cousins being huge fans of Marvel), but my own interest in the hero didn't really start until I saw part of Origins on FX some years back (yes, don't scold me about how bad that film is, I know). I've grown to really like this character, but honestly, I'm not a huge fan of his mask, and sometimes I don't like how his suit looks. And, like with Batman, but even more so, the longer his costume's ears, the less I like it. I actually have a 2-part Wolverine comic I got for my 20th birthday from the friend who introduced me to Deadpool (the comics not surprisingly are a two-part confrontation between the two characters, who have a long history). I'm not a big fan of the illustrations of Wolverine in the comics (he often looks bug-eyed, and I prefer the yellow-blue costume coloration over yellow-brown).

Wolverines are considered ruthless killers as they don't always kill their prey instantly but instead paralyze it by biting it in the spine. In the winter the wolverine may kill several reindeer in quick succession. This is typical for weasels as they kill animals for storage. The wolverine then returns to the carcass, just like the bear. It rips off the prey animal's neck tendons and rarely leaves any claw marks on the animal. The wolverine also often detaches the prey animal's head.
In Northern Finland where reindeer husbandry is practiced wolverines are unfortunately persecuted, regardless of their low numbers. Even though they are critically endangered poaching of this beautiful carnivore (and other large carnivores of Finland) is not uncommon there. Also, as unreasonable as it is, Finland's Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry allows, and sets permits for wolverine hunting. Hunting of wolverines is outrageous and short sighted as there would be non-lethal methods available. The small population should be preserved, not hated and killed, as wolverines are an important part of the ecosystem and nature.
As per 2018 Finland paid 2700 euros or more per large predator (wolverine, wolf, lynx, bear) killed reindeer to the reindeer herder. For a single reindeer that herder sold for meat, he got around 500 euros. I am sure those numbers are higher today, but I wasn't able to find any reliable sources for that information. For this reason, some herders are known to buy reindeer calves, or use some of their adult reindeer, and intentionally leave them for the predators to kill. However, most of the Sami herders are honest and follow the law.
I photographed this hungry, salivating wolverine during early morning hours in Eastern Finland, by Russian border. He found some meat left for him as a bait in front of our photography hide.
During this trip, I was also informed that wolverines had recently been poisoned by the haters in the area. Such a beautiful animal doing what he is meant to do...be a wolverine. Sadly, there is less and less human kindness in this world.

Na praça Generoso Marques, dia desses.
E ele ainda nos perguntou: "Mas vocês conhecem o Wolverine?" como se o personagem fosse um indie dos quadrinhos.
A gente conhece.

Rest break during the Wolverine 200 in 1989.
The Wolverine 200 is a 24 hour "bicycle marathon" in which the participants try to ride the most number of miles. Goals are set at 25, 50 , 100 or 200 (of course) miles. Up until the mid 1990s, the Wolverine 200 used to draw more than 2,000 participants with thousands more camping in support. The now defunct Detroit Grand Prix put serious limitations on the course and particpation has shrank to 400-500 people a year.
