Here's the first image (and hopefully the longest edit) of my shoot with the very talented David Lawn.

I met David via modelmayhem and am very glad I did. This part of our shoot was based on a magician concept.

Hardly any photoshop in this. It was raining out, so my students and I went down to the basement and played with a flashlight and long exposures. There was an inch of water on the floor and it was pitch black. Our kind of place!

Westina: You will be staying for lunch, right, my pretty? (about to pet Toto)

Dorothy: My friends and I just want o get away from you!!! (puling Toto away from Westina's clutches)

Westina: Please stay, I will remove the spell.

Glinda calls over, Don't worry Dorothy, she will let them all go. I'll see to it. Please stay for lunch. I've missed you.

Dorothy: I will stay for Glinda as long as you remove the spell, let them all go, and never bother us again! Do you promise???

To be continued....

I designed this poster to be reminiscent of a Victorian era advertisement. I can totally imagine this hanging in the window of a wizarding shop somewhere--right next to a poster for Bertie Botts and Cauldron Cakes.

Another shot I made with Yvonne who came by yesterday. Actually this was a testshot, but I so liked it and it immediatly brought this image in mind. So here's me having spent another night PS-ing instead of my planned couchtime ;-) I can get so tangled in painting in PS...it's an addiction...help!

Each year, Westina teases Glinda with some sort of Halloween "trick." It often involves Dorothy and her friends. Last year, she turned all of them into rats.

This year, she has placed a spell on Dorothy and her friends that makes them shrink down to miniature size.

Westina has been rehabilitated, well, as much as a wicked witch can be. She is no longer allowed to really hurt any people, lions, tinmen, scarecrows, dogs, cats, monkeys, rabbits, Munchkins, gnomes, or fairies. She had to sign a contract with the Wizard in order to be allowed to remain in the Oz community.

There was nothing in the contract about "playing" with these creatures so she sticks to the letter of the law and still enjoys a bit of evil pleasure.

Glinda returned to the cemetery and had words with Westina. She was furious that she interracted with mortals, especially children.

We were listening to the stories of Klass Vaak with my kids in Efteling Bosrijk when I did this shot. Few days ago I was reading about Photomorphis when I decided to create this conceptual photo-illustrations where the fantasy and magic effects come back aline directly from the fairy tales Klaus was telling to the kids.

I love the result, I suggest full picture with black background. Comments welcomed

Warner Bros Studio Tour London: The Making of Harry Potter

Warner Bros Studio, Aerodrome Way, Leavesden, Watford, Herts, WD25 7LS

A great day out for every fan of the boy wizard.

The Making of Harry Potter studio tour, covering 150,000 square foot, on two soundstages opened on the 31st March 2012, with stars galore at the red carpet launch at the Leavesden Studios where all eight movies were produced.

The home for many film productions, including several James Bond features, before a relatively new production company arrived there to make a film about a young boy who on his 11th birthday discovers he is a wizard.

Over the next ten years, the cast and crew of over 4,000 in total used more and more of the studios as the popularity of the books and films grew. The three young stars lived, grew up, went to school and turned into adults there on those stages.

Your tour begins in the foyer, with a flying Ford Anglia hanging from the ceiling and the walls adorned with huge photos of the cast, along with a few props.

Passing by the set of the cupboard under the stairs, you enter a room with a number of vertical TV screens showing Potter movie posters from around the world, followed by a short video sequence showing the rise of Harry’s popularity, the production teams discovery of the stories and the enormous worldwide success of the books and films.

Moving into the cinema, a short film introduced by Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, talking about their experiences growing up on a film set for ten years, with clips from all eight films. The film ends with them standing in front of the main doors to the Great Hall and they walk in through the doors and invite you to follow them.

The screen at this point slowly rises to reveal the actual main doors to the Great Hall, surrounded with stone statues and carvings. What a wizard way to start the tour.

Walking through into the Great Hall we are told that we were now walking on the actual stone floor used in the films and seeing the actual tables where the actors ate their feasts. Dummies down each side of the hall wear the actual costumes used in the films. At the far end of the hall is the teachers’ table area, with more amazing costumes worn by Professors Dumbledore, Snape, McGonagall, Moody, Trelawney and Flitwick, as well as Hagrid and Filch too.

Leaving the Great Hall you enter the first of two vast sound stages. This includes sets for the Gryffindor Common Room and Dormitory, Dumbledore’s Office, Potions Classroom, Hagrid’s Hut, Burrow’s Kitchen and parts of the Ministry of Magic, also Umbridge’s gaudy pink, feline office. Each filled to the brim with props and costumes.

Props can be seen everywhere, with a massive cage in the centre, chock-a-block with goblets, chandeliers, wands and armour. A huge glass case contains the wands of 24 of the major characters – less than 1 percent of the total number of wands made for the films. The ornate doors to a Gringott’s vault and to the Chamber of Secrets are seen after passing a wall dedicated to the paintings produced to decorate the walls of Hogwarts.

Below the giant swinging pendulum of the Hogwarts castle clock there are several huge touch screens containing an interactive Marauders Map.

There are sections of the soundstage dedicated to various movie-making crafts. The hair and makeup section, costumes section, animal department, graphic design and production.

The final section in this first soundstage is dedicated to the Special Effects department with three huge video screens showing all the tricks and techniques, including greenscreen footage and CGI. Props attached to their motion rigs, include the Gringott’s Vault Cart and Mad-Eye Moody’s Recumbent Broomstick.

In separate room you can have a go on a broomstick or drive the Ford Anglia yourself, using the greenscreen technology.

The Backlot about half way round the tour is an open air section between the two soundstages where refreshments are available, including Butterbeer the popular wizarding beverage.

Also featured on the backlot are the Knight Bus, another Ford Anglia, Hagrid’s motorbike/sidecar, the Riddle family tombstone, a section of the rickety wooden Hogwarts Bridge, Potter’s burnt out cottage from Godric’s Hollow and Number 4 Privet Drive.

Entering the second soundstage you pass some of the giant chess pieces from the first movie. A number of video screens here progressively show what it was like to work in the creature shop, cleverly leading you from one screen to the next, past models of Fawkes, a snapping Monster Book of Monsters and a giant animatronic head of Hagrid. The next room has the life size (i.e., ENORMOUS!) model of Aragog the spider and one of three animatronic Buckbeak models.

Walking around the corner (WOW) you are transported into another world entirely. The dark lighting and cobbled street can only mean one thing – you have entered Diagon Alley. The shops using the original sets have been rebuilt– Flourish & Blotts, Eeylops Owl Emporium, Potage’s Cauldron Shop and of course Ollivander’s Wand Shop, each and every one them is crammed full of detail. At the other end of the street is Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes, with the bright orange shopfront standing out from the crowd of blackness and featuring a moving model of one of the red-haired twins doffing his hat.

At the end of Diagon Alley you move onto the Art and Design department with walls covered with architectural drawings and detailed plans, accurate down to the millimetre, for many of the props and sets already seen. A draftsman’s table serves as a projection screen for another video about the work of the art department.

Moving on, up the ascending path are walls full of concept paintings and artwork, also intricate cardboard models of Hogsmead and the Hogwarts.

You are only looking at a model of the model though, as entering the next room, there, spread over at least 15 square metres is the most amazing, complex and elaborate model built to a 1:24 scale. It has a bigger footprint than the average house.

The last part of the tour is a fitting tribute to the crew and cast of the most popular film franchise of all time. A much tidier recreation of the interior of Ollivander’s Wand shop, with over 4,000 wand boxes lining its shelves – one for every single person who worked on the films.

Exit through the Gift Shop.

Zen and the Art of Potion Making, pt.1

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the hottest show ticket on London's West End. I wish I could have seen this play but it's sold out for the next several months. A lottery system allows a few lucky fans to get tickets to the show each week but you'd have to be very lucky to win.

Check out this close up of Cursed Child’s artwork, rendered as a vast three dimensional statue that dominates the Palace Theater’s entryway. It looks great but there's something kind of creepy about it..

“The dragon roared, and spat out fire, the house caught on fire.

“Hold the dragon back!” Exclaimed Aidric. “I'll put out the fire!”

The knights were noble, valiant men, but they didn't stand a chance. Magic was needed. And magic was what Aidric possessed.

Aidric raised his staff, and a mighty green light sprang forth from it! The water from the pond swirled, and raised up, creating a sphere of water. The sphere shot out to he fire, and as fast as the fire had came, it was gone.

The dragon swiped a mighty paw, and felled Sir Theodoren. With a roar, a stream of fire spewed from the dragons mouth, engulfing Sir Theo.

“No!!” Cried Sir Espan.

Espan raised his sword, and charged the dragon.

“Stay back!” Yelled Aidric. “I'm coming”

Aidric raised his staff again, and the brilliant light of green was back, twice as large as before!

All the water in the pond swirled out, and with superhuman strength, it slammed into the head of the dragon! The dragon let out a mighty roar! Espan, and Sir Rowan took advantage of the dragons temporary blindness, and charged with their swords.

The dragon flapped its magnificent wings, and flew up into the air. A spell from the ancient language spewed from Aidrics mouth, and the dragon was pushed back, far into the open plain.

The dragon flew away, recognizing it's defeat.

The knights cheered! Aidric let out a sigh of relief. For now, the battle was over.

But the dragon would be back. And it would be stronger than ever.”

My entry to the Dragon contest, hosted by the amazing Siercon and Coral. Sorry about the not-so-good backstory. It would have been better if I had took more time to write the story, but oh well.

Merlin's Quest 25/06/2021 16h09

Merlin is a mythological figure prominently featured in the legend of King Arthur and best known as an enchanter or wizard. The first of the three sectons of the dark ride part of this boat ride. You enter in the mist with some mist and the Gatekeeper of the attraction.

Merlin's Quest

Merlin's Quest is a cruise attraction in the Dutch theme park Toverland and is located in the theme area Avalon. The attraction is all about the mythology surrounding Merlin the Wizard and the search for the source of eternal life Tír na nÓg.

During the design process, Merlin's Quest was designed in various ways, both in layout and attraction type. The initial idea was that the attraction would be a walkthrough attraction in a triangle-shaped space. Later in the design, the footpath was replaced by a canal through which boats would pass. Ultimately, the building has undergone various forms and layouts during the design process, such as a castle and fairytale house. Ultimately, a ruin-like building with a tower and surrounded by large rocks was chosen.

The attraction opened on Saturday July 7, 2018 in the Avalon theme area. Construction of the attraction began in 2017. On June 11, 2018, the attraction's first test drive took place. In the week before the opening, the new theme area was opened for, among others: staff, media and other invited guests. The amusement park made a behind-the-scenes documentary of the entire construction. In the summer of 2018, barriers were fitted to the back of the boats and the boats in front of the stations are slowed down to mitigate the impact in the event of a collision due to congestion.

The Merlin's Quest station building is located in the southeast of the themed area. The station building is a wooden construction and functions as a boathouse. On the first floor there is a decorated room with an animatronic and a moving painting in which Merlin the Magician can be seen. The control room is located on the ground floor. The boats cross over the large pond in the center of the themed area to head towards the Fēnix roller coaster station building. It is located in the northwest of the theme area. As a result, the cruise has a short dark ride part, the first of the amusement park. This part of the dark ride consists of three areas. In the first room you can see a cave, which contains a green gnome-like creature: the Gatekeeper. The being speaks of the source of eternal life. Furthermore, there are various smell, mist and odor effects and the idea is created that the boat is sailing straight ahead into the tunnel. However, the boat turns right and sails into the second room: The Room of Wisdom. In this room you can smell the smell of a fireplace and all kinds of objects fly through the room such as: books and a birdcage. Merlin is visible on an LCD screen and lists various ingredients, opening a stone wall to the third and last room, this room is decorated after a forest/ruin. In the scene, various mythical creatures are visible that are surrounded by fog and various scent and light effects. After leaving the dark ride section, the boats return to the station in the open air.

During the ride, the fourteen boats cover a distance of 430 meters in twelve minutes. That equates to approximately 2.15 km/h. The boats will move individually from each other because there is a rapid in the fairway.

A Wizard Family Portrait! No. 4

This is a vintage black and white copyright free photo I had in my collection of vintage images from the late 1800's. I completely re-vamped the image on photoshop and some on paintshop. I then altered it with a variety of elements from several colors, to butterflies, wizard hats, moon, pictures, book, curtains, etc. I then added a variety of filters and techniques to the piece.

I was inspired by Harry Potter, The Worst Witch, Fairytales, Arthur Rackham, Houdini and various Magician/Wizard posters from the 1900's.

This version has an aged vintage photo coloring, old photo border and dark color blend!

... the mage is dreaming, or so he thinks in his dream, ha have started to recognize the pattern...

As always he starts of walking the streets of the city at night...

...nothing weird with that, he is often out mid night, peeping, eh, I mean collecting light sensitive urban herbs...

...but something is not quite the same city as he is use to... all the sudden the street starts bulging and softly swaying as if it was liquid...

...then the patch of ground underneath him breaks loose from the ground, he is trapped on a floating island of urban landscape...

then all the sudden he always hears faint voices, very faint, just whispers, like: where is our gold, you foooled uuus!

...then as always there would be a corpse limb breaking through the ground, then another ghost, a skeleton from a door in a broken floating house...

Now their lamented calls would grow stronger: "Youu ooold foool, wheeere is oour goold!"

...like a quire of tortured souls, then demons and horrid mount-beasts would start circling around him, dragons of spooky zombie-like reptiles carrying satanic imps on their backs!

...The Wizard woke up in his cell down the palace lower levels he lodges from the king!

...his bed would be full of sweat, every time... still being able to smell the sulfuric oder from his dream...

He know, that this is no ordinary dream, it is a call from the other side! from the beyond!

...as he lights every single candle and lamp in his small lodged dungeon room, he start thinking about how he can get more gold for the nasty sinister ghouls and imps and his satanic majesty himself, not to forget mentioning him!

...this must be stopped, he must acquire more gold, but how, how long could he stall these daemons? when would they have the strength to breach in on through their realm in to his reality???

Gold I need Gold!
