Ever since I was a kid I’ve been fascinated by bears. To me they are beasts with more than a little human to them, which is both charming and unsettling. For the last 10 years at least, I’ve wanted to go to Finland to see them in one of their last bastions, the primal swamp forest on the border with Russia, and due to the rare emergence of free time that wouldn’t inconvenience my nearest and dearest, I took the opportunity to go. Many of us are familiar with long-held expectations turning out to be something of a disappointment, but this one wasn’t. It was absolutely magical. And this bear was an absolute monster!

A landscape artist but I'm afraid my camera will have to be my palette and my artistry will have to be painting in light. But it would be nice to find a quiet spot and spend a few hours sitting and painting the scene in front of you.

This is proabably my last new post of 2021, as I will be on the road this weekend. So here I wish everyone happy holidays.

Sometimes I still couldn't believe we made it. This March, my wife, my less than 4 year old son, and less than 12 month daughter and I, we together completed a family trip lasted almost a month with our trailer as first time RV owner. We traveled 6 states and visited famous and rarely visted locations. It was a bit crazy and yes, it was a bit tiring, but my family had some wonderful memories. I also got some chance to take landscape shots.

This is the best light I got from the trip. As you can easily tell it is Crater lake, the place I have always wished to take an sunrise shot in the winter. And that wish came true. Woke up early when my family were still fast asleep, drove up to the lake, geared up and snowshoed for 3 miles before in the dark before the first light in chilly winds. I just had one chance as our trip schedule was tight, well maybe two. (I picked one of two mornings which has higher chance of based on my weather and cloud forecast) And I was lucky to get this awesome light, as well as red and pink reflection colors from snow, All worth it.

So I got impatient and went to visit Santa way too early to make sure I get what I wish for Christmas ^^

No camera today so had to make do with my phone.

SOOC because i couldn't edit if i tried (do wish i had some fancy presets, though). the light was so varied and so in my face, any tool i used either made the antennae disappear, the wings oversharpened, or the light blown out... this is just how this sweet butterfly appeared back in august. so, i can't much complain.

There's a popular belief in Aruba that if you balance stones and make a wish, it comes true. Clearly, there are a lot of believers.

Loonies (the Canadian 1 dollar coin), quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies line the colourfully tiled bottom of this good luck fountain in the middle of a plaza Lisa and I were doing some shopping in today.

Note the swirls and distortions caused by the constantly moving water.

Each coin (hopefully!) represents a happy wish made by someone...I can't remember which two they are, but Lisa's and I's coins are in there as well!

I hope she wished that we would be together forever...that was my wish!

This picture brings to my mind a poem, a favourite of my mother's actually, written by Florbela Espanca, a Portuguese poetess of the early 20th century. I couldn't find a satisfactory English translation so I made my own. The power of the words will be lost but the meaning is preserved, I think.

Vain Wishes

I wish I were the Sea of lofty demeanour

Singing and laughing, the immense vastness!

I wish I were the mindless Stone,

The stone on the path, coarse and strong!

I wish I were the Sun, the intense light,

The bliss of the humble not favoured by fortune!

I wish I were the Tree, rugged and dense

Laughing at the vain world, indeed at death itself!

Yet, the Sea also weeps in sorrow…

The trees as well, as if in prayer,

Open their arms to the heavens, like a believer!

And the lofty and mighty Sun, after one day,
